REFLECTIONS

ACT ONE

FADE IN: INT. BEDROOM - MORNING

A digital clock rolls over from 6:29 to 6:30, followed by a loud buzzing noise. Boy in the nearby bed
reaches to flick off the alarm. Then he sits up and slowly makes his way out of bed, heading towards a
nearby bathroom.

INT. BATHROOM -

Boy leans down to wash his face in the sink. Then grabs a nearby towel and dries himself.

As the boy lowers the towel, he looks into a mirror. Inside the mirror is a reflection of him and another
pale looking boy but he doesn’t see it yet.

INT. KITCHEN - MORNING

J, dressed in a full suit and tie, walks into the kitchen and his wife prepares a quick breakfast.

Wife: Hey Honey, I know you’ve been working hard these past few days.

Wife massages his back after giving a plate of food.

J: Thanks Honey, but I got to get going. I’ve got business to attend to.

W: If you say so, take care

Several moments pass with J’s expression growing more cheery, as they hugged each other

J left the scene, showing his wife looking after him.

Bob throws open the car door. Then jumps in and starts the engine.

INT. CAR - SAME

HAROLD

It’s funny isn’t it?

J looks up at the rear where G has now appeared. He leans back into the car seat and sighs.

J: Glance?

G: Well I was just thinking of the time we skipped school and drove up to Julian. And the whole way, you

kept looking out for the cops. As if they were going to drag us back to school.
J: Why are you here!

G: I told you, I don’t know.

J: Stop the nonsense!

G:Are you having trouble at work?

J:No.

G: Trouble with your parents?

J:No!

G: Ah. So that’s it! Who is it? Some girl I know?

J: doesn’t reply.

G: You aren’t going to get far by giving me the silent treatment. It was always your tell. So let’s see, a girl
I’d know. Is it Jennifer? Maybe Sarah? Jeanine? Wait, don’t tell me it has something to do with Ellie?

J’s frustration gives way to surprise. His expression tells Harold all he needs to know.

G: My god. You actually got together with her!

J: Stop it! Stop talking right now!

CUT TO:

J: Get the hell out of my car G! I’m not going to talk about this with you!

Various people in nearby cars look on with confusion.

INT

Bob pulls into a parking space near a medical building and went to his office. He saw G’s reflection in the
mirror.

J: Damnit G!

G: Wait! You don’t understand!

J tosses his briefcase on his desk and sits in his chair. He turns on his computer, then reaches across the
desk to turn on the monitor. In the blank monitor is the reflection of Harold, who waves at him.
G: (hesitant) Hey.

J slams his hand down on the table and pushes himself up.

Then storms out of his office and darts straight to the bathroom at the end of the hall.

INT. OFFICE BATHROOM - SAME

The bathroom door flies open and Bob rushes in. He walks up

to a mirror and points at it with pure contempt.

J: Okay, let’s get this over with! What the hell do I have to do to get rid of you!

G:I honestly don’t know. I’m not trying to make you mad, but its something you have to figure out on
your own.

J: I’m trying to work! I have patients waiting for me! And instead I’m stuck in a bathroom,

arguing with a reflection of my dead friend! This doesn’t make any sense!

G: I agree. I mean, if I’m dead, then what are you even seeing? Do I even exist?

J leans against the wall, tired and unwilling to fight anymore.

J: If you don’t know what you’re doing here, than that can only mean...

G: That I’m a manifestation of your mind? I guess so. Or more accurately, you guess so.

J: No. This can’t be happening.

G: If we are to believe I am part of your subconscious, perhaps that part of you is trying to get

something out. Something you had buried long ago.

J: But we already talked about Ellie.

G:Perhaps it doesn’t have to do with Ellie. Perhaps you’re seeing me because I am the trigger.

J looks towards Harold with fear, coming to a realization.

J: No. I don’t want to talk about this!

G:You have to talk about it. You have been bottling this up for far too long.

J: So suddenly you know everything? Then tell me what it is I’m suppose to remember. What am

suppose to admit?
G: But you already know what it is. I only know because you have revealed it to yourself. The next step is

to let it go.

J: Let what go! I can’t just forget what happened. And even if I could, I don’t want to.

G: You don’t need to forget. I hope you never forget me. But you do need to stop blaming yourself.

J: I never blamed myself.

G: You did. You continue to blame yourself. Even in this very moment, you cling to it. It has become such
a part of you, you are afraid to let it go. Even when you know it is eating away at you.

J: But how can I forgive myself? You died!

G: You had no part in my death. It was my choice.

J: But if I had only noticed the signs. If I had just been nicer to you

G: You know that’s not how it works. You were a good friend and helped me more than you know.

J: Then why? Why did you do it!

G: Isn’t that why you chose this profession? To find the answer?

J: Yes.

G: Then surely you know.

J: I hate you. I hate you for what you did. You hurt both me and Ellie. And I’ve hated you ever since.
Don’t you understand!

CUT TO- Flashback G and Ellie were college sweethearts while J was his bestfriend;

He died from suicide after failing an examination;

Ellie and J became lovers.

RESUME-

G: I understand.

J: I know you were in pain. But now we’re the ones in pain! We have to go on living for more than just

ourselves. We have to live your life as well!

G says nothing.

J: I can never forgive you. You should have been the one to marry Ellie. You should have gone to
college with us. You should have tried out for the Olympics and lived your dream. You should have

lived!

Slowly PULL BACK TO REVEAL that the mirror behind J is empty.

J: I understand that none of this is my fault. But I can’t forget. I don’t want to forget. Can you

understand my feelings?

J sighs as he looks at his reflection, red and puffy from anger and tears. He bends down and washes his
face in the sink and dries himself off with a towel. Then reaches to the right, pulling his white lab coat off
a nearby hook. He walks out of the bathroom as he is putting the coat on. The door slowly closes behind
him.

J: (V.O.) All right nurse. Who’s the first patient for today?
