Marcy Gordon used to love playing in her tree house as a kid. She used to spend many hours every day in her tree
hideaway, sometimes with friends, but mostly she loved to be alone. Later, she went to college and became a
computer specialist, but she never forgot her favorite outdoor space.
A few years after graduating, Marcy got married. Later, she had two children, and she wanted them to have a tree
house too. Marcy decided to build the tree house herself, with some help from her husband and children. She found
some plans on the Internet, and they spent every Saturday for two months building it. Marcy realized that she had
found her true career.
At the age of 38, Marcy quit her job and started her own business building tree houses. She began showing her
children's tree house to friends and neighbors, and soon she had a few jobs. Before long, she had more orders than
she could handle, so she hired people to help her.

build them for their children.

Until recently, the popular cars in the United States were sport-utility vehicles, or SUVs. On average, these large
truck-like cars use more gasoline than other vehicles. But now, because there is so much pollution from cars,
trucks, and buses, and because fuel prices are rising, people are beginning to look for alternatives.
To meet the demands of the new environmentally conscious consumer, auto companies are making more and more
hybrid vehicles, or vehicles that run on both gas and electricity. These cars get an average of 80 kilometers (50
miles) to the gallon, compared with regular cars at 34 kilometers (21 miles) per gallon. In addition, the exhaust is
cleaner, so the vehicles create less pollution.
People who own a hybrid say that they can't tell the difference between a regular car and a hybrid. The hybrid
vehicle performs just as well as their old car. But there is one difference - the money they spend on gas is
significantly lower with a hybrid. And they feel better about not polluting the environment.
49. Why have people in the United States started looking for a different type of vehicle?
a. They want a car that uses less gas. b. They want an SUV.
c. Because it is expensive. d. They want to drive a truck.
51. How are auto companies providing consumers with a better alternative?
a. by causing less pollution b. by selling more gallons of gas
c. by producing fewer SUVs d. by producing more hybrid cars
No.3 A change for the better Read and answer the questions.
Rick Kaplan had a stressful job that often required him to work 60 hours a week, plus many weekends. He never
had time for his family. Though he made a good salary, he wished he could spend more time with his wife, and his
children were growing up quickly. He looked at his finances and saw that he spent a lot of money on commuting to
work, eating out, and dry-cleaning his suits. He decided to cut back on expenses and live a simpler life so that he
could be with his family more.
Rick sold his car, and for six months he took the bus to work, brought his lunch to work, and drank the coffee at his
office rather than buying expensive drinks at the coffee shop. Then he found a lower-paying job closer to home and
quit his stressful job. Now he makes less money, but by saving, he has just as much money as before to support his
family, and he can spend more time with them, too.
More and more people are deciding to adopt this new philosophy of living and simplify their lives in order to spend
more time doing what is important to them.
