Discourse Analysis
is the examination of the relationship between forms and
functions of languages.

Consider the following three different exchanges:

A: Got the time?


B: Ten-fifteen.

Walter: More coffee?


Customer: I’m okay.

Parent: Dinner!
Child: Just a minute.
Conversational Analysis
“Conversations are cooperative ventures”.

Topic Nomination- rules for introducing or nominating


topics in a conversation which involves both verbal and
non-verbal cues, are contextually constrained or limited.

Topic Development-after nomination, participants then


embark on topic development using conventions of turn-
taking to accomplish various functions of language.
Topic Clarification- also known as Repair of linguistic
forms that contain errors.

Topic Shifting or Avoidance- these are considered


interruptions, a form of attention getting, a typical
feature of all conversations.

Topic Termination-ending a conversation.


Corpus Linguistics
