AWARNINGA
Improper praclices, carelessness, 01' ignoring lhe warnings can cause burns, culs, mulilalion, asphyxialion
01' olher personal injury 01' dealh.
Read and understand all of the safely precautions and warnings before performing any repaie. This lisl conlains the
general safety precautions lhal musl be followed lo provide personal safety.. Special safety precautions are included
in lhe procedures when lhey apply.
oWork in an area surrounding lhe product thal is dry, welllil, venlilaled, free from clutler, loose lools, parls, ignilion
sources and hazardous subslances. Be aware of hazardous condilions lhal can exis!.
o Always wear protective glasses and proteclive shoes when working
o ROlating parts can cause cuts, mutilation or slrangulalion
o Do nol wear loose·fitting or lorn clothing.. Remove all jewelry when working.
o Disconnecl lhe battery (negalive [-) cable first) and discharge any capacilors before beginning any repair work.
Disconnecl the air starting molor if equipped lo prevenl accidental engine starting. Put a "Do Nol Operale" lag
in lhe operalor's compartmenl 01' on the conlrols.
o Use ONLY the proper engine barring lechniques for manual/y rotating lhe engine. Do nol attempt to rotale lhe
crankshaft by pul/ing 01' prying on the fan. This practice can cause serious personal injury, properly damage, or
damage to the fari blade(s) causing premature fan faí/ure.
o If an engine has been operaling and the coolanl is hot, allow the engine to cool before slowly loosening the filler
cap to relieve lhe pressure from lhe cooling syslem.
o Always use blocks or proper stands to support the product before performing any service work. Do nol work on
anylhing thal is supported ONLY by Iifting jacks 01' a hois!.
o Relieve al/ pressure in the air, oil, fuel, and cooling systems before any Iines, fittings, or related ilems are removed
or disconnected. Be alert for possible pressure when disconnecting any device from a system that ulilizes
pressure. Do nol check for pressure leaks with your hand. High pressure oil 01' fuel can cause personal injury.
o To reduce lhe possibility of suffocation and frostbite, wear protective clolhing and ONLY disconnect Iiquid
refrigeranl (Freon) Iines in a well ventilaled area. To prolecl lhe environmenl, Iiquid refrigerant syslems musl be
properly emptied and filled using equipment lhal prevents lhe release of refrigeranl gas (fluorocarbons) inlo the
almosphere.. Federallaw requires capturing and recycling refrigeran!.
• To reduce lhe possibilily of personal injury, use a hoisl 01' gel assislance when Iifting componenls lhal weigh 23
kg [50 lb] or more. Make sure alllifting devices such as chains, hooks, 01' slings are in good condilion and are
of lhe correct capacily. Make sure hooks are posilioned correctly. Always use a spreader bar when necessary..
The Iifting hooks musl nol be side-Ioaded.
o Corrosion inhibilor, a componenl of SCA and lubricating oil, conlains alkali. Do nol gel lhe subslance in eyes.
Avoid prolonged or repealed conlact wilh skin. Do nol swal/ow inlernally In case of contacl, immedialely wash
ski n wilh soap and waler. In case of conlacl, immediately flood eyes wilh large amounts of waler for a minimum
of 15 minules IMMEDIATELY CALL A PHYSICIAN. KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN.
o Naplha and Melhyl Elhyl Kelone (MEK) are flammable malerials and musl be used wilh caulion. Follow lhe
manufacturer's inslruclions lo provide complele safety when using these materials. KEEP OUT OF REACH OF
CHILDREN
• To reduce lhe possibility of burns, be alert for hol parls on products that have just been turned off, and hot fluids
in Iines, lubes, and compartmenls.
o Always use lools that are in good condilion. Make sure you understand how to use the /Ools before performing
any service work. Use ONLY genuine Cummins or Cummins ReCon® replacement parts.
o Always use lhe sarne fastener par! nurnber (01' equivalent) when replacing fasteners Do nol use a fastener of
lesser quality if replacemenls are necessary.
o Do nol perform any repair when fatigued 01' after consuming alcohol or drugs that can impair your funclioning .
o Sorne stale and federal agencies in lhe Uniled Stales of America have delermined thal used engine oí/ can be
carcinogenic and can cause reproductive loxicily.. Avoid inhalalion of vapors, ingeslion, and prolonged contact
with used engine oi!
• Liquified pelroleum gas is heavier lhan air and can accumulate near lhe floor, in sumps, and low-Iying areas.
o Natural gas is Iighter lhan air and can accumulate under hood and awnings.
o To reduce the possibility of suffocalion and froslbile, wear protective clolhing and ONLY disconnect natural gas
and liquified pelroleum gas lines in a wel/ ventilaled area.

A WARNINGA
Abrasive malerial musl be kepl oul of or removed from oil passages and parts wear poínls. Abrasive malerial
in oil passages can cause bearing and bushing failures Ihal can progress lo major componenI damage beyond
reuse. This is particularly Irue of main and rod bearings.
Cummins Inc does nol recommend lhe use 01 emery clolh or sand paper on any part 01 an assembled engine or
component ineluding but nol Iimiled lo removing lhe carbon ridge lrom cylinder Iiners or lo clean block decks or
counlerbores.
Greal care musl be taken when using abrasive producls to clean engine parts, particularly on partially assembled
engines. Abrasive eleaning producls come in many lorms and sizes AII 01 lhem conlain aluminum oxide particles,
silicon carbide, or sand or some olher similar hard maleriaL These particles are harder than mosl 01 lhe parts in the
engine. Since lhey are harder, il lhey are pressed againsl softer material lhey will either damage lhe malerial or
become embedded in it. These materials lall off lhe holding media as lhe producl is used. II lhe producls are used
with power equipmenl the partieles are lhrown about lhe engine. II lhe partieles lall between lwo moving parts, damage
lo lhe moving parts is Iikely..
II particles lhal are smaller lhan lhe clearance belween the parts while lhey are al resl (engine stopped), but larger
lhan lhe running clearance lhen damage will occur when lhe parts move relalive to each olher (engine slarted). While
lhe engine is running and lhere is oil pressure, partieles lhal are smaller than lhe bearing clearance are Iikely to pass
belween lhe parts wilhoul damage and be trapped in lhe oil lilter.. However, partieles larger lhan lhe bearing clearance

will remove material lrom one part and can become erTíbedded in one 01 the parts. Once embedded in one part il will
abrade the olher part unlil contact is no longer being made between the two parts. II the damage sufficiently degrades
the oil fiim, the two parts will come into contact resulting in early wear-out or lailure lrom lack 01 effective lubrication.
Abrasive particles can fly about during cleaning it is very important to block these particles Irom entering the engine
as much as possible. This is particulary true 01 lubricating oil ports and oil drilling holes, especially those located
downstream 01 the lubricating oil fiiters. Plug the holes instead 01 trying to blow the abrasive particles and debris with
compressed air because the debris is often simply blown lurther into the oil drilling.
AII old gasket material must be removed Irom the parts gasket surfaces. However, it is nol necessary to clean and
•
polish the gaskel surlace until the machining marks are erased. Excessive sanding or buffing can damage the gasket
surlace. Many newer gaskets are 01 lhe edge molded type (a steel carrier with a sealing member bonded to lhe steel)..
Whal Iittle sealing material that can adhere is best removed with a blunt-edged scraper or pulty knile. Cleaning gasket
surlaces where an edge-molded gasket is used with abrasive pads or paper is usually a waste 01 time
AWARNINGA
Excessive sanding or grinding lhe carbon ring Irom lhe top 01 lhe cylinder liners can damage lhe liner beyond
reuse. The surlace linish will be damaged and abrasive particles can be forced inlo lhe liner malerial which
can cause early cylinder wear-out or pislon ring failures.
Tape 011 or plug all openings to any component interior belore using abrasive pads or wire brushes. II really necessary
because 01 time to use a power tool with abrasive pads, tape the oil drillings closed or use plug and clean as much
01 the surlace as possible with the tool but clean around the oil hole/opening by hand so as to prevent contamination
01 the drilling . Then remove the tape or plug and c1ean the remaining area carelully and without the tooL DO NOT use
compressed air to blow the debris out 01 oil drilling on an assembled enginel More Iikely than not, the debris can be
blown lurther into the drilling. Using compressed air is line il both ends 01 the drilling are open but that is rarely the
case when dealing with an assembled engine.
Gasket Surfaces
The object 01 c1eaning gasket surlaces is to remove any gasket material, not refinish the gasket surlace 01 the parto
Cummins Inc. does nol recommend any specilic brand 01 Iiquid gasket remover. II a Iiquid gasket remover is used,
check the directions to make sure the material being c1eaned will nol be harmed.
Air powered gasket scrapers can save time but care must be taken to nol damage the surface. The angled part 01
the scraper must be against the gasket surlace to prevent the blade lrom digging into the surlace. Using air powered
gasket scrapers on parts made 01 soft materials takes skill and care to prevent damage
Do nol scrape or brush across the gasket surface if at all possible.
AWARNINGA
When using solvents, acids, or alkaline malerials for cleaning, follow lhe manulaclurers recommendations
lar use. Wear goggles and prolective clolhing to reduce the possibilily of personal injury.
Experience has shown that kerosene emulsion based cleaners perform the pest to clean pistons. These cleaners
should nol be heated to temperature in excess 01 77°C (170°f). The solution begins to break down at temperatures
in excess 01 82°C (180°f) and will be less effective
Do nol use solutions composed mainly of chlorlnated hydrocarbons with cresols, phenols and/or cresylic components.
They often do nol do a good job 01 removing deposits Irom the ring groove and are costiy to dispose 01 properly.
Solutions wilh a pH aboye approximately 9.5 will cause aluminum to turn black; therelore do nol use high alkaline
solutions.
Chemicals with a pH aboye 7.0 are considered alkaline and those below 7.0 are acidic As you move lurther away

Remove alllhe gasket malerial, o·rings, and lhe deposits 01 sludge, carbon, etc., wilh a wire brush or scraper belore
putting the parts in a cleaning tank. Be carelul to not damage any gasket suriaces. When possible use hot high
pressure water or steam clean the parts belore putting them in the cleaning tank. Removing the heaviest dirt belore
placing in the tank will allow the cleaner to work more effectively and the cleaning agent will last longer.
Rinse all the parts in hot water alter cleaning. Ory completely with compressed air. Blow the rinse water lrom all the
capscrew holes and the oil drillings.
1l the parts are nol to be used imrnediately after cleaning, dip them in a suitable rust prooling compound. The rust
prooling compound must be removed lrom the parts belore assembly or installation on the engine.
Steam Cleaning
Steam cleaning can be used to remove all types 01 dirt that can contaminate the cleaning tank. It is a good method
lor cleaning the oil drillings and coolant passages
AWARNINGA
When using a steam cleaner, wear safety glasses or a face shield, as well as protective clothing. Hot steam
can cause serious personal injury.
Do not steam clean the lollowing components:
• Electrical Componenls
• Wiring Harnesses
• Injectors
• Fuel Pump
• Belts and Hoses
• Bearings (ball or taper roller)
• Electronic Control Module (ECM)
• ECM Connectors
ACAUTIONA
Do not use bead blasting cleaning methods on aluminum pistons skirts or the pin bares in any pistan, pislon
skirt or pistan crown. Small particles 01 the media will embed in the aluminum or other soft metal and resull
in premature wear of lhe cylinder liner, pistan rings, pins and pin bares. Valves, turbocharger shafts, etc.,
can also be damaged. Follow the cleaning directions listed in the procedures.
ACAUTIONA
Do not conlaminale wash tanks and tank type solvent cleaners with lhe foreign material and plaslic beads.
Remove the loreign malerial and plastic beads wilh compressed air, hot high pressure water or steam befare
placing them in tanks or cleaners. The foreign malerial and plastic beads can conlaminate the tank and any
other engine parls cleaned in the tank. Contaminated parts may cause failures from abrasive wear.
Plaslic bead blastíng media, Part Number 3822735, can be used lo clean all piston ring grooves. Do not sure any
bead blasting media on piston pin bores or aluminum skirts.
Follow the equipment manulacturer's cleaning instructions. Make sure to adjust the air pressure in the blasting
machine to the bead manulacturer's recommendations. Turning up the pressure can move material on the part and
cause the plastic bead media to wear out more quickly. The lollowing guidelines can be used to adapt to
manulacturer's instructions:
1. Bead size: U.S. size Number 16 - 20 lor piston cleaning with plastic bead media, Part Number 3822735
2. Operating Pressure - 270 kPa (40 psd) lor piston cleaning. Pressure should nol cause beads to break.
3. Steam clean or wash the parts with solvent lo remove all 01 the loreign material and plastic beads after cleaning.
Rinse with hot water . Ory with compressed air.

The bead blasling operation must not disturb the metal surfaee. 1I lhe m!')lal surface Is dislurbed lhe engine
can be damaged due lo increased parts clearance or inadequale su rlace linish on parls lhal move againsl •
other parts.
When cleanlng pistons, it is nol neeessary to remove all the dark stain from the piston. AII that is neeessary is to
remove the earbon on the rlm and In the ring grooves. This Is best done by dlreetlng lhe blast aeross the part as
opposed to straight al the parto If the maehlning marks are dlslurbed by the blastlng proeess, then the pressure Is too
high or the blast Is being held on one spot too long. The blast operation musl nol disturb the metal surfaee
Walnut shell bead blast material Is somellmes used to elean ferrous metals (Iron and steel). Walnut shell blastlng
produces a great amount 01 dust partieularly when the pressure if the air pressure on the blastlng maehine Is Inereased
above media manufaeturer's reeommendation, Cummlns Ine. reeommends nol uslng walnut shell media to elean
imgine parts due to the risk media embedment and subsequent eontamlnatlon of the engine.
Cummins Ine. now reeommends glass bead media NOT used to elean any engine parts. Glass media Is too easily
embedded Into the material partieularly in soft materials and when alr pressures greater than media manufaeturer's
reeommend are used. The glass Is an abrasive so when it Is in a moving part, that part Is abradlng all the parts In
eontaet with 11. When hlgher pressures are used the media is broken and forms a dust of a very small slze that floats
easily In the air. Thls dust Is very hard to control In the shop, partleularly If only eompressed air (and not hot water)
is used to blow the media after It Is removed from the blastlng eablnel (blowing the part off inside the eabinet may
remove large aeeumulatlons but never removes all the media).
Bead blasting Is best used on stubborn dirUearbon build-up that has nol been removed by first steam/higher pressure
washlng then washing in a heated wash tank This Is partieularly true of pistons. Steam and soak the pistons flrst then
use the plasUe bead method to safely remove the earbon remalning in the grooves (instead of runnlng the rlsk of
damaging the surfaee finlsh of the groove wlth a wlre wheel or end of a broken piston rlng. Make sure the parts are
dry and oil free befare bead blastlng to prevent c10gging the return on the blastlng maehlne.
Always direet the bead blaster nozzle "aeross" rather than direetly at the parto Thls allows the bead to get under the
unwanted materiaL Keep the nozzle movlng rather than hold on one place. Keeplng the nozzle dlreeted at one-plaee
too long causes the metal to heat up and be moved around. Remember that the spray is nol just hittlng the dlrt or
earbon. If the maehining marks on the piston groove or rim have been dlsturbed then there has nol been enough
movement of the nozzle and/or the air pressure is too high.
Never bead blast valve stems.. Tape or use a sleeve to proteet the stems during bead blastlng.. Dlreet the nozzle aeross
the seat surfaee and radius rather than straight at them. The objeet is to remove any earbon bu lid up and eontlnuing
to blast to remove the stain is a waste of time.

Cruise Control
Feature Description
NOTE: Functionality varies depending on engine product
Cruise Control provides the driver with loot-off-throttle cruise operation with the ability to adjust and maintain a desired
road speed. Cruise Control and its capabilities vary according to its operation mode. There are two switches used to
operate Cruise Control, the Cruise Control ON/OFF switch and the Cruise SetlResume-CoastlAccelerate switch. The
Cruise Control ON/OFF switch allows the operator to !Urn the Cruise Control on and 0110 The SetlResume-Coastl
Accelerate switch allows the driver to set and resume the Cruise Control lunction and decrement or increment by one-
mile-per hour by bumping (briefly enabling) the coast or accelerate switch.
Three basic operation modes 01 Cruise Control are possible, each dependent on switch settings and operating
conditions: Ofl, Standby, and Active:
Off - Cruise Control does not affect engine operation, nor can it be activated. The Cruise Control ON/OFF switch is
OFF
Standby - The Cruise Control ON/OFF switch is ON, but Cruise Control has been deactivated and does nol aflect
engine operation. Cruise Control will rernain on standby when the Cruise Control ON/OFF switch is initially placed
ON until a request lor activation is made by the driver using the Cruise SetlResume switch by either setting a desired
speed or resuming to a desired speed. Activation will be allowed if all of the lollowing requirements are mel:
• Vehicle speed must nol be below 30 mph
• Engine speed musl nol be below 1,000 rpm
• Brake pedal musl nol be depressed
• Clutch pedal musl nol be depressed
• A vehicle speed sensor lault musl nol be present
Active· Cruise Control is controlling engine lueling to maintain the desired road speed. Once activated, a Cruise
Control relerence speed will be calculated by using information lor the Cruise Control Maximurn Vehicle Speed, Driver
Rewards reward (reler to Driver Reward leature description), and the Cruise Control Set Speed. Cruise Control will
maintain vehicle speed at the Cruise Control set speed unless an interaction occurs with any one 01 the lollowing:
• Maximum Torque Curve
• Programmable Droops
• Accelerator
• Maximum Vehicle Speed (Road Speed Governor Limit).
Maximum torque curve is the maxirnum lueling allowed at an engine speed versus revolution per minutes (RPM) lor
the horsepower rating 01 the engine. Cruise Control can nol achieve vehicle speeds that will requile fueling exceeding .
the maximum torque curve 01 the engine.
Two prograrnmable droops are available: an upper and a lower droop.
The upper droop causes vehicle speed to decrease slightly below the Cruise Control relerence speed at high engine
loads, such as when climbing a grade.
The lower droop allows vehicle speed to increase slightly aboye the Cruise Control reference speed at low engine
loads, such as when at the bottom 01 a grade..
For example: When climbing a steep grade in Cruise Control and the upper droop (uphill droop) is set to zero mph
with Cruise Control speed set at 62 rnph, the engine will maintain vehicle speed at 62 mph as long as the rnaximum
torque curve is not exceeded. However, if the upper droop is set to another choice, such as two mph, the Cruise
Control will allow vehicle speed to drop 60 mph. After dropping down to 60 mph, Cruise Control will maintain vehicle
speed at 60 MPH. As the vehicle nears the top 01 the grade and accelerates toward 62 mph, Cruise Control will slightly
limit vehicle speed between 60 and 62 mph.
When nearing the bottom of a steep grade in Cruise Control and the lower droop (downhill droop) is set to zero mph
with Cruise Control speed set at 62 mph, the engine will maintain vehicle speed at 62 mph. However, il the lower
droop is set to two mph, Cruise Control will allow vehicle speed to roll out to 64 mph .

Section FB - Industrial Features Page FB-3
The accelerator can be used to increase vehicle speed temporarily, above the Cruise Control set speed but below the
Global Maximum vehicle speed When the accelerator is released, Cruise Control will automatically resume to the
Cruise Control set speed"
Road Speed Governor Override - Depending on the status 01 Gear Down Protection, Cruise Control can or will nol
be able to cruise at vehicle speeds greater than Road Speed Governor relerence speed, II Gear Down Protection is
active, then the Cruise Control governor can nol exceed Road Speed Governor relerence speed" II Gear Down
Protection is nol active, then the Cruise Control governor can cruise at speeds higher than Road Speed Governor •
relerence speed, up to a maximum vehicle speed
Cruise Control will allow vehicle cruise speeds higher than the maximum Cruise Control speed il the Driver Reward
leature is enabled (reler to Driver Reward leature description lor additional explanation), Cruise Control will compare
the Cruise Set Speed and the Driver Reward cruise speed" The lesser speed 01 the two will then be used as the Cruise
Control speed
Cruise Control Auto Resume will automatically deactivate and reactivate during Top 2 and manual shifts, II Top 2
perlorms a shift, Cruise Control will automatically deactivate and reactivate, with no additional programming required
When a manual shift is perlormed, Cruise Control will deactivate by depressing the c1utch and will automatically
reactivate after the ECM detects an out-ol-gear condition has been detected and the in-gear condition resumes in a
diflerent gear than the previous gear.
Engine brake in Cruise Control can be used to apply the engine brakes during Cruise Control use. Engine braking
eflort is determined by vehicle speed, the Cruise Control relerence speed, Cruise Control speed lor initial engine
brake, and Cruise Control speed lor maximum engine brake. In order lor the Cruise Control to activate engine brakes,
engine brake musl be enabled, and all engine brake activation conditions musl be met (reler to Engine Brake Options
leature description),
II vehicle speed exceeds the Cruise Control relerence speed lor initial engine brake, Cruise Control will request the
engine brakes to activate. II all requirements are met, the engine brakes will go on at the minimum leveL II vehicle
speed exceeds Cruise Control relerence speed for maximum engine brake, the engine brakes will go on at their
maximum leveL Engine brakes will not increase beyond the level set by the engine brake level switch. Engine brakes
will automatically deactivate as vehicle speed approaches the Cruise Control relerence speed
Driver Activation/Deactivation
NOTE: Functionality varies depending on engine product.
To activate Cruise Control, turn the Cruise Control ON/OFF switch ON. Press the Set switch when the desired cruise
speed is achieved
To put Cruise Control in standby mode, depress the brake pedal or clutch pedal. Cruise Control will automatically go
to standby when vehicle speed lalls beiow 30 mph, engine speed is too low, or a vehicle speed Sénsor error occurs,
To deactivate Cruise Control turn the cruise ON/OFF switch to the 011 position.
Disadvantages
Possible customer complaints
Low Power - Upper droop settings greater than zero will lessen the engine's grade climbing and accelerating
perlormance near the maximum Cruise Control speed,
Cruise Control does nol operate at set speed, but can be caused by Driver Reward selting, maximum accelerator
override selting, or droop settings

Engine Protection
Feature Description
This leature monitors critical engine operating conditions (Examples: Coolant temperature, oil pressure, coolant level,
intake air temperature, intake manilold pressure). When an operating condition is outside 01 calibrated limits, a speed
or power derate will result in combination with illumination 01 the red stop and or amber warning lamps. AII calibrations
with the exception 01 Fire Truck, Fire Pumps, and marine are equipped with the Engine Protection leature that derates
the engine il an Engine Protection value is out 01 range.
In operation, the ECM monitor s engine operating conditions while the engine is running . II one 01 the critical operating
conditions exceeds the engine protection limit, as delined in the calibration, a derate will occur and a amber warning
lamp will be illuminated. II the condition is more severe, a red lamp and more sever derate will occur.
For some products (beginning in 2002) a very slight derate can occur lor slight coolant temperature or intake manilold
temperature events without lamp illumination. In such cases a lault code will be stored in the ECM memory and the
inlormation will also be stored in the Engine Protection History database. The degree 01 a slight derate will not be
noticeable to a driver or equipment operator. II the temperature event persists during the slight derate, then a more
severe derate will occui in combination with the red lamp.
The severity 01 the Engine Protection derate will \tary according to which engine operating condition has exceeded
its engine protection IimiL Also, the severity 01 the derate can vary in relation to the severity 01 the event (Example:
Intake Manilold Temperature slightly aboye a threshold lar a short period 01 time will result in a mild derate. By
comparison, il Intake Manilold Temperature is over a threshold lor a longer time or il the condition becomes more
severe, a more sever derate can occur). II the condition persists and Engine Protection Shutdown is enabled, the red
lamp will Ilash SO seconds prior to the engine shuttíng down. This is done to warn the vehicle operátor 01 the impending
shutdown even!
Some (not all) engine lamilies allow selection 01 Restart InhibiL II Restart Inhibit is selected, the keyswitch must be
turned 011 prior to restarting the engine lollowing any Engine Protection Shutdown evenL Once restarted, the engine
wi.ll continue to operate at the derated condition . Also, a limited number 01 restarts (varies by engine lamily) is available.
Driver Activation/peactivation
II Shutdown Manual Override is available in the calibration and has been enabied with the INSITE""' service tool and
the GEM has installed a switch in the cab, the driver can reset the shutdown timer any time after the red light begins
Ilashing by activating the OEM installed switch. Resetting the timer will provide an additional SO seconds 01 engine
run time belore automatic engine shutdown due to the engine protection condition. There are no limits on how many
times the timer can be rese! II Shutdown Manual Override is not available in the calibration, there is no driver
interaction with this leature.
Disadvantages
If a driver reports that there is low power, look at the engine protection history to determine if an engine protection
limit was temporarily exceeded.

Fan Control
Feature De$cription
Various fan control features are available and while not all aspects of fan control are available on all engines, most
(but nol all) electronic controlled engines have some Electronic Control Module (ECM) fan control capability..
Fan control capability means that the ECM is able to tum the fan on or off in response to any of the following inputs:
Engine operating conditions (coolant temperature, intake manifold temperature, etc.)
Control of fan overspeed
Air conditioner operation
Manual fan switch
Engine performance requirements (Example: engine braking)
NOTE: Many Industrial engines have fan controls as part of the ECM calibration that can nol be adjusted using the
service too 1.
Driver Activation/Deactivation
The driver can override the ECM to tum the fan on, using the manual fan switch installed in the cab by the vehicle
manufacturer, When the driver places the manual fan switch in the ON position, the fan will be on regardless of other
engine operating conditions. When the manual fan switch is in the OFF posilion, the fan will operate according to
engine operating conditions and according to how the fan control parameters are configured
Disadvantages
Due to heat rejection, the fan on during engine braking feature will appear inconsistent to some vehicle operators
(Example: Consider an ISX calibration setting that the fan will engage 15 seconds after engine braking starts. It will
be possible for the fan to somelimes come on sooner in response to air intake temperatures, coolant temperatures,
or the air conditioner pressure switch).

Driver Activation/Deactivation
Using the Intermediate Speed Control Switched Set Speeds
The operator can operate the engine using the Intermediate Speed Control Set Speeds with OEM installed
Intermediate Speed Control Switches, or an equivalent OEM installed device. Activating Intermediate Speed
Control can or can not cause Accelerator Pedal inputs to be ignored.
Using the Intermediate Speed Control Variable Speed Set Points
The operator can operate the engine using the Intermediate Speed Control Variable Speeds; Intermediate Speed
Control Variable Speeds are selected with an Accelerator Lever or an equivalent switching device that is installed
by the OEM. This device can contain a potentiometer that sends a variable signal to the ECM. Based on the output
of the potentiometer, the engine will be controlled to one of five Intermediate Speed Control Variable Speeds.
Refer to the figure below for visual reference. It is recommended that all five speeds be chosen and entered in a
sequential order so that as the operator increases the position of the hand throttle, the engine speed will change
accordingly..

Accelerator Options
Feature Description
This feature allows the user to determine the type of engine governor controL The two types available are the
automotive (minimum or maximum) and Variable Speed or AII Speed Governor types. The automotive governor
provides a constant fueling for a given accelerator position. With the automotive governor selected the engine speed
can vary with changes in engine loading for a constant accelerator position.
The Variable Speed governor provides a constant engine speed for a given accelerator position. With the Variable
Speed governor selected the engine speed will remain constant with changes in engine loading for a constant
accelerator position. The Variable Speed governor is an optipn. It is best suited for applications where a constant
engine speed is desired to perform a desired task where engine or power take-off speed must rernain constan!.
Driver Activation/Deactivation
The selection of the governor t¡¡pe can be accomplished two ways.. If the vehicle is equipped with a cab'mounted
switch, the driver can activate this switch to select between the automotive or Variable Speed governor. If the cab
switch is not available the INSITE"" service tool can be used to select the desired governor type.
Disadvantages
For applicalions that require a constant engine speed to perform a desired task, the automotive governor will not hold
the engine or Power Take-Off speed constantfor a given accelerator position.
