In the book “Windfall” by Jennifer E.

Smith she writes about 3 young friends Teddy, Alice

and Leo. Teddy is a brown hair rebellious boy and his best friend Alice is the complete opposite.
This book explains the struggles of some the high school teens like stress, losing parents, and
having parents split.

The book starts off with Alice buying Teddy a lottery ticket on his 18th birthday. While she
is on the bus on her way over to Teddy’s apartment with her cousin Leo, Alice expresses her
feelings about Teddy in a small card. Alice has had a crush on Teddy for a longtime. When they
get to the birthday party Alice hesitate to give Teddy the card not knowing how he will respond,
so she hides the card. Once the night finally ends Alice and Leo decide to spend the night since
it’s getting late. Once Leo falls asleep Alice and Teddy talk and then she soon realizes Teddy is
about to kiss her. There moment is interrupted by Leo waking up. When Teddy and Alice wake
up, the news comes on and announces the winning lottery numbers. Once they announced them
Alice realizes that those were the number she picked, and Teddy is soon to be a millionaire. Teddy
is so excited that he shares a kiss with Alice, neither knew what to say about the kiss so they talk
about what to do with the lottery ticket instead.

Next week at school while Teddy and Alice are walking to their last class together, he
makes her promise that she will not let the money change him Alice say’s ok, but she can already
tell he is changing from the money. A few weeks later Teddy and Alice get into a fight about what
he should do with the money. That’s when Alice brings up the kiss which Teddy said that it meant
nothing. Teddy say’s some hurtful things to Alice about her life by bring up her parents and says
she’s only volunteering at the soup kitchen to make them happy and how she was a coward because
she didn’t take some of the money when Teddy offered it to her. Alice thought he should donate
the money to those in need instead of traveling the world, but Teddy doesn’t listen and starts his
travels around the world leaving his mom and Alice for many weeks

Throughout “Windfall” Jennifer E. Smith shows how something good could easily turn
into something bad she shows this by showing that Teddy won the lottery which is usually a good
thing but after he won his friendship between Alice and have gone through hard times. A example
of that is when Teddy gets really anger in the book and says “ I’m not going to sit here like everyone
else and pretend it’s because you were noble. You said no because you’re a coward.”. I really
enjoyed this novel and give it a 4.5/5 I can’t think of anything I would change about it. Jennifer E.
Smith, I feel put happiness, sadness, heartbreak and love perfectly together in a way to make
“Windfall” a perfect book for many.
