The Blessing of Sending Salawat

Bismillah-ir Rahman-ir Raheem.

We congratulate the ummah of Rasulullah (Peace and Blessings be upon Him) for the arrival of
Rabbi-ul-Anwar. This month is the month of the community (ummah) of blessing (khair).

Rasulullah (Peace and Blessings be upon Him) was born in Rabbi-ul-Awwal, and the revelation (wahy)
started in Rabbi-ul-Awwal. It is narrated in a Hadithin Sahih Al-Bukhari that Sayyida A’isha (May
Allah be pleased with her) said: The revelation began when what Rasulullah (Peace and Blessings be
upon Him) saw in his dreams materialized as reality, and this happened for six months. This means
the dreams became reality and reality became the dreams and there was no difference between the
two.

Rabi-ul Awwal is the birth month of the One with the absolute reality (Peace and Blessings be upon
Him).

Many people say that the revelation started in Ramadan; however, it was the revelation of the
Qur’anthat started in Ramadan.

Sayyida A’isha (May Allah be pleased with her) said: The revelationbegan when whatever Rasulullah
(Peace and Blessings be upon Him) saw in his dreams became reality, and this happened for six
months. In another Hadith, the first ayah to be revealed and the first interaction with Jibreel (Peace
be upon him) was in Ramadan. If we put the two Hadiths together, then six months prior to
Ramadan is when the revelation began, which is Rabbi-ul-Awwal.

The birth of Rasulullah (Peace and Blessings be upon Him) was in Rabbi-ul-Awwal, the revelation
started in Rabbi-ul-Awwal and the arrival of Rasulullah (Peace and Blessings be upon Him) in
Madinah was in Rabbi-ul-Awwal. These incredible events make Rabbi-ul-Awwal a month of joy and
happiness.

Some people say that Rasulullah (Peace and Blessings be upon Him) departed from this world on the
twelfth of Rabbi-ul-Awwal, however his departure was certainly not on the twelfth. This is because
all the scholars have agreed that Rasulullah (Peace and Blessings be upon Him) gave his Farewell
Khutba on the day of Arafat on a Friday, in the year of his departure. If Rasulullah (Peace and
Blessings be upon Him) gave his Farewell Khutba on the day of Arafat, then He could not have passed
on the twelfth of Rabi-ul Awwal in the same year.

When Rasulullah (Peace and Blessings be upon Him) was asked why he fasts every Monday, He
(Peace and Blessings be upon Him) said: That was the day that I was born. He (Peace and Blessings
be upon Him) was giving thanks to Allah for the blessing of his arrival in this world. Hence we
congratulate the ummah in this month of joy and celebration, as our Lord (The Most High) said in
the Qur’an:

Say: with the Blessing and Mercy of Allah, people should rejoice, and that it is better for them than
what they accumulate.
(Surah Yunus, 58)

The month of the arrival of Rasulullah (Peace and Blessings be upon Him) is a gift of joy and
happiness that Allah (The Most High) has given us. Rasulullah (Peace and Blessings be upon Him)
fasted the day of Ashura because it is the day that Allah (The Most High) granted victory and success
to Sayyidina Musa (Peace be upon him); and hence Rasulullah (Peace and Blessings be upon Him)
fasted out of happiness and gratitude. So we thank Allah (The Most High) and we show how grateful
we are. It is the heartof a believer that overflows with happiness in this month. Rasulullah (Peace
and Blessings be upon Him) is the source of blessing and mercy in our lives, in both this world and
the next.

With that, the gift we would like to give to all those we love is what Sayyidi Imam Ash-Sharani (May
Allah cover him with Mercy) has mentioned in his book:

Hada’iqul Anwar fi Salati wa-Salaami al-an-Nabi-il-Mukhtar

In this book, Imam Ash-Sharani (May Allah cover him with Mercy) has mentioned the blessings
(barkaat) and the benefits (fawaid) that we receive from sending salawat (prayers) to Rasulullah
(Peace and Blessings be upon Him), which are enumerated below:

1. We are obeying Allah (The Most High), as Allah (The Most High) said:

Verily, Allah and his angels send their salawat upon Rasulullah (Peace and Blessings be upon Him). [O
you who have believed, ask [Allah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [Allah to grant him] peace.
(Surah Al-Ahzab, 56)

2. We are following Allah (The Most High) in His salawat upon His Habib (Beloved) (Peace and
Blessings be upon Him).
3. We are following the angels in sending salawat upon Rasulullah (Peace and Blessings be
upon Him).
4. We receive ten salawat from Allah (The Most High) by sending one salawat upon Rasulullah
(Peace and Blessings be upon Him).
5. Allah (The Most High) raises our rank tenfold. (This refers to rank, not merely an increase in
our good acts).
6. Allah (The Most High) grants us ten good acts (hasanat).
7. Allah (The Most High) erases ten sins from us.
8. Salawat gives us the hope of Allah (The Most High) accepting our dua.
9. It is one of the means of getting the intercession of Rasulullah (Peace and Blessings be upon
Him).
10. It is a means of forgiveness and for Allah (The Most High) covering our shame.
11. Salawat is the means by whichAllah (The Most High) becomes our Sponsor in facing all of our
concerns.
12. Salawat is a means of getting closer to Rasulullah (Peace and Blessings be upon Him).
13. It is also a gift (sadaqah) to send salawat upon Rasulullah (Peace and Blessings be upon Him).
14. What we wish for or want can happen by sending salawat upon Rasulullah (Peace and
Blessings be upon Him).
15. Allah (The Most High) and His Angels (malaika) send salawat upon those who send salawat
upon Rasulullah (Peace and Blessings be upon Him).
16. Salawat is a means of purification.
17. Sending salawat is a gladtidingfor those who do so before their death.
18. It is a means of saving you from the calamities of the Day of Judgement.
19. It is the means by which Rasulullah (Peace and Blessings be upon Him) responds to your
salaam.
20. People who are in a gathering of salawat will never see any regret or harm in Yaum-ul-
Qiyamah.
21. For those who send salawat constantly, it is a means of removing povertyand for helping
people.
22. Salawat removes the worst attribute, stinginess.
23. Salawat saves one from curse. When Rasulullah (Peace and Blessings be upon Him) was
climbing the steps of the pulpit (mimbar), Sayyidina Jibreel (Peace be upon him) said to Him
(Peace and Blessings be upon Him): Say, cursed he or she is who does not send salawat upon
you.
24. Salawat is the means of success, as it ushers one into the company of Rasulullah (Peace and
Blessings be upon Him). The one who sends salawat will be brought to the path of Jannah,
and the one who leaves sending salawat upon Rasulullah (Peace and Blessings be upon Him)
will miss the path.
25. A gathering in which salawat is sent is protected from evil.
26. Sending salawat saves one from those who abandon salawat or those who are abandoned
by salawat and by Allah (The Most High).
27. Sending salawat is praising Allah (The Most High).
28. Salawat is a means of Allah’s (The Most High)mercy (Rahma).
29. It is the means of blessing (baraka).
30. It is the means of receiving the continous love of Rasulullah (Peace and Blessings be upon
Him).
31. It is the means of increaing iman.
32. It is the means of guidance (hidaya) and life for the heart.
33. Each salawat sent to Rasulullah (Peace and Blessings be upon Him) is presented to Rasulullah
(Peace and Blessings be upon Him) as well as the sender’s name.
34. Sending salawat is the least of the rights of Rasullah (Peace and Blessings be upon Him) and
of showing gratefulness (shukr) to Allah (The Most High)for our blessings (ni’mah).
35. Sending salawat is to remember Allah (dhikrUllah), and is thankfulness to Him.
36. The greatest fruit of sending salawat to Rasulullah (Peace and Blessings be upon Him) is to
be includedin the collective spirit(ruh) and breath (anfas) of those who send salawat upon
Rasulullah (Peace and Blessings be upon Him).

So let us send salawat upon Rasulullah (Peace and Blessings be upon Him) because if we send
salawat we do not even need dua for ourselves. Sending salawat is a benefit for us, and not for
Rasulullah (Peace and Blessings be upon Him).
In relation to this, it was narrated in Hadith that Sayyidina Ubay (May Allah be pleased with him)
asked Rasulullah (Peace and Blessings be upon Him): Ya Rasulullah, how much of my time for
dua shall I dedicate for making salawat upon you?
Rasulullah (Peace and Blessings be upon Him) said: As you wish.
Ubay (May Allah be pleased with him) said: Ya Rasulullah, then one-quarter of my time?
Rasulullah (Peace and Blessings be upon Him) said: As you wish, but if you do more it will be for
your own benefit.
Ubay (May Allah be pleased with him) said: Half of my time?
Rasulullah (Peace and Blessings be upon Him) said: If you do more, it will be for your own benefit.
Ubay (May Allah be pleased with him) said: Two-thirds of my time?
Rasulullah (Peace and Blessings be upon Him) said: If you do more, it will be for your own benefit.
Ubay (May Allah be pleased with him) said: All of my time?
Rasulullah (Peace and Blessings be upon Him) said: If you do, then Allah (The Most High) will be
your sponsor in all your issues in this world and Allah (The Most High) will forgive all of your sins
on Yaum al-Qiyama.
The joy of this world and the next is connected to sending salawat upon Rasulullah (Peace and
Blessings be upon Him).

Dua (Supplication)
