Early Life. He was born on October 1, 1924 in Plains Georgia. He is currently 94
years old, making him the oldest living president right now. His father was a
peanut farmer and his mother was a nurse.

First person from his father’s side of the family to graduate high school.
Studies engineering Georgia Southwestern ROTC program and then was accepted to the
Naval Academy in Annapolis.Â

Graduated at the top ten percent of class in 1946. Married Rosalynn Smith, whom he
knew since childhood.Â

The navy assigned carter to work in submarines. Moved frequently. Virigina, Hawaii,
Connecticut, California, and the Washington DC.
He had 3 sons and one daughter.Â

Father died from cancer and his farm fell into disarray. Carter and family moved
back to rural georgia to take care of farm. Became active in community politics and
became chairman for Sumter County Board of Education.Â

1950s were still a period of segregation and racial discrimination.Â


Carter only white man in plains to refuse to join a segregationist group called the
White Citizens Council.

Ran for senate in 1962, and won the election. Two term senator, tough and
independent. Did not spend wastefully and supported civil rights. 1966 ran for
governer but lost. Ran again in 1970 and won. Called for an nd to segregation,
increased number of black officila in government by 25%.

Hit home at a time of distrust in government. Secured nom and ran against Gerald
Ford. (nixons vp) Won election and became 39th pres. High approval ratings. Main
pritoriat was energy polilct. Decreased foreign oil consumption by 8% but prices
went up again after iranian revolution of 1979. Caused high prices and long lines.
Overshadowed achievments. Froegn Policy to make human rights a central concern.
Leading to historic peace treaty between Israel and Egypt. Recognized each others
governments.

Poor relationship with congress and media. 1979 gave the “Crisis of confidence”
speach. Which blamed americas problems on poor spirit of the people.Â

Notable: Iran Hostage Crisis. Nov. 1979, radical iranian students seized us embassy
in tehran taking 66 americans hostge. Carter failed to negotiate release and
conducted a botched resuce mission. Made him look outmaneuverd. Hostages were
released after 444 days. They were released on the day carter left the office.Â

Many humanitatiran efforts. Worked with habitat for humanity and found carter
presidental center, wihich promatoed rhuman rihghts and to alleviate suffering.
2002 recieved noebel peace prie for deaced of work to find solutions for
internation conflicts. Â

2015 surgery to remove mass from liver. Melanoma on brain. Radiation treatment.
December, no trace of lesions. Longest living us president.Â

1969 said he spotted ufo. Promised to released every sealed document gov had on
