Reflections of Collaborative Learning

Student-Team- Achievement-Divisions (STAD)

T. Sandhya Kumari, Phase-2, Fall 1.3

1. Introduction:
Collaborative learning activity allows the student to interact with other students during
their learning process. The students improve their communication skills through
discussions, develop creative thinking and solve the given task in a team. This type of
activity motivates the student to learn the concept easily rather than the traditional
class teaching. Collaborative learning is one of the innovative methodologies that can be
adopted to make the regular class more students centric. It meets the learning styles of
21st millennium learners. Collaborative learning includes activities such as:
 Student-Team-Achievement-Divisions (STAD)
 Teams-Games-Tournament(TGT)
 Team-Assisted Individualization (TAI)
 JIGSAW
 Group Problem Solving
 Team Based Learning
 Case Study
 Fish Bowl Debate
 Learning Together and etc.
2. Activity Implementation:
I have implemented Student-Team-Achievement-Divisions (STAD) Collaboration activity
to students in my recent class after proper planning to conduct the activity for the
course, topic and objective as:
Course: Linear IC Applications Class: III-I ECE-C
Topic: Active Filters Activity Chosen: STAD
Concept:
1. Frequency Response characteristics of Butterworth filters.
2. Analysis of Low pass and High pass filters.
3. Design of first order & second order low pass & high pass filters.
Objective:
At the end of this activity, students will be able to:
 Explain the response characteristics of Butterworth low-pass, high-pass, band-
pass and band reject filters.
 Examine the response characteristics of low pass & high pass filters.
 Apply the steps to design first order & second order low pass &high pass filters.

As per my plan to conduct the activity, the following are the steps I have implemented:
 Content is delivered to the students for 2 sessions.
 Objective of the activity is explained to the students and the teams were formed
in 1 session.
 Conducted the activity for 4 sessions where the students in team go through the
concrete material provided, use the web sources, discuss and solve the given
task.
 Conducted test to the individual in team to solve the given task for 1 session.
 Conducted group quiz to assess the team for 1 session.

The total time taken to complete the activity is:

Content Delivery: 2 sessions.
Form teams: 1 session.
Collaborative learning activity: 4 sessions
Assessment: 2 sessions
 Individual problem solving- 1 session
 Team quiz - 1 session.
Total Time: 9 sessions (with 1 session = 50 min)

2.1 Content Delivery:

Before conducting the activity, the educator is required to provide the necessary
content to the students. For this, I have taken 2 sessions to explain the basic concepts of
 Differences between active and passive filters : 10 min
 Frequency response characteristics of Butterworth filters : 20 min
 Fundamentals on the design of first order filter : 20 min
 Fundamentals on the design of second order active filters :20 min
 Concrete material to refer: 30 min.
2.2 Interaction session:

Discussed the benefits of Collaborative learning activity to students and motivated them
to participate actively. Explained the outcomes of the activity and the students were
asked to take the quiz on learning styles to form teams.

2.2.1. Formation of teams:

Forming teams is an important task for the success of the activity. Students learn
differently. The students with same learning style can perform well in a team but the
students with different learning styles would perform better especially for problem
solving tasks. So, I thought that the activity would be success if the team contains
students with different learning styles. The strategy I followed to form teams are as
follows:
2.2.2. Strategy followed:
Asked the students to take the quiz on learning styles created by Felder using the link
http://www2.ncsu.edu/unity/lockers/users/f/felder/public/ILSpage.html
Identified the learning style of each student (Active/Reflective, Sensing/ Intuitive,
Verbal/Visual and Sequential/Global learners) and formed the teams with team size of 4
members comprising one strong sequential learner, one strong global learner and the
remaining two members were formed based on active/reflective, sensing/intuitive,
verbal/visual learners sequence. The survey report of the students after taking the test
on learning styles is given in Annexure-1.The table representing the learning styles of
the students and the teams formed is as follows:

2.3 Activity:

The following is the description on how I have implemented the activity in my class:

 For the first 2 sessions, I asked the students to refer the material given to them,
memorize the fundamental content delivered, refer prescribed text books or web
sources and asked them to discuss and learn the differences between active &
passive filters, types of filters, first order filter analysis & design in a team.
 For the next 2 sessions, I continued the activity by asking the students to learn
the second order filter analysis & design steps by referring the sources available.

During the activity, the student involvement in the discussion, interest in learning the
concept, team work & individual performance is observed. The following are the points
observed during the implementation of activity:

 Some members in the team were not active during discussion.

 I formed 4 members in a team, but observed that they again split into two and
were discussing.
 Observed that visual learners felt difficulty.
 Observed dead lock

2.4 Steps taken to keep discussion going on & motivate the non-participating
members:

 Counseled and motivated the non-participating students to participate.

 Explained the outcome of the activity.
 Explained the significance of team work.

2.5 Assessment:
The summative assessment for the team is done by conducting team quiz for 1 session.
4 questions were asked to each team. For summative individual assessment, 4 design
problems were asked to solve by the individual in the team and were assessed.

2.5.1. Rubrics for formative assessment:

The rubrics for individual formative assessment and team formative assessment are
given in Table 4 and Table 5 as:
