as Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited. Madras Refineries
Limited (MRL) was formed as a joint venture in 1965 between
the Government of India (GOI), AMOCO and National Iranian
Oil Company (NIOC). Originally, MRL was set up with an
installed capacity of 2.5 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA) in
a record time of 27 months.
The following year, special skills for Heat & Mass Transfer Design were developed.
Leveraging the technical collaboration agreements, EIL designed approximately
` 8 crore worth of heat exchangers, fired heaters and distillation trays. The vision
of a technology-driven Company to stay ahead in the market had emerged. It was
in the same year that the Computer Services Department was formed to keep
abreast with technological advances. EIL also made substantial progress in using
Electronic Data Processing in the optimisation of its design and in increasing the
effectiveness of its management information systems.
