Buddhism is a world religion. People who


follow this religion are called Buddhists.
Buddhism grew from the teachings of prince
Siddhartha Gautam. He is known as the
Buddha. This means ‘The Enlightened one’ –
The one who found truth.
The Buddha was born over 2500 years ago in
Nepal. Even though he was a prince, the
Buddha gave up all his riches. He became a
travelling preacher. The Buddhist teachings
were written down in a book called the
Triptika. Buddhist monks and other Buddhist
followers study these writings. They aim to be
kind and peaceful and always do the right
things.
There are about 300 Million Buddhists all over
the world. Most live in Asia. Buddhists pray
and mediate at home or in temples. They also
make Offerings of fruit, Flowers and incense.
An important Buddhist festivals is the
Buddha’s birthday.
