Write up for Grime Beast – Free Composition Music GCSE.

My free composition is written using samples that I have arranged into a kind of ABA
structure. The beginning of the piece has some filtered vocal samples that make the sound
like they are in the background and the bass line goes between E and G# and then B which
are the notes of an E major chord. The piano hook part comes in then which is a descending
melody of an E major scale going E, D#, C , B and G#. It is repetitive and so it’s catchy.

After this happens there is arpeggiator that comes in over the top of the other layers. It is
just playing an E major chord as semi quavers. There are some other samples as well that go
from left to right.

After this there is a ‘boom’ sound where the music goes into the B section which has a beat
drop, the drums come back in on beat 4 before the distorted drum beat with fast high hats
and then there’s the vocal sample again with some other samples. There is no melody here,
so that the focus is just on the beat to create a contrast between the A and B sections.

The A section repeats again with the bass line and the piano hook and then at the end
there’s another filtered sound with a quiet drum beat mixed to the left-hand side before the
boom at the end of the piece.
