The objective of the research is to find out the influence of IPA symbol
strategy toward students’ pronunciation ability at third semester in English
Education Study Program of Tomakaka University. The research design was pre-
experimental with one group pre-test and post-test, while the instrument of the
research was oral test. The research took place at Tomakaka University by
selecting the English Education Study Program as population in academic year
2016/2017. The researcher employed purposive sampling by taking the third
semester as the sample. The data collection was through pre-test and post-test.
Pre test was given to determine students’ pronunciation ability before conducting
the treatment, and to find out the achievment of the students after giving treatment
the researcher administered the post-test. The variables of the research were the
use of IPA Symbol strategy as the independent variable, whereas the
pronunciation as the dependent variable. And the data analyzed quantitatively.
The result of the data analysis showed that the degree of freedom (df) was 25 (n -
1) where n = 26 so 26 – 1 = 25, the level of significant (p) = 0.05, the t-test value
= 10.23 and t-table value = 1.708. the t-test value was greater than t-table value
(10.23>1.708), this showed that there is a significant difference between the pre-
test and post-test. It means that the Alternative Hyphotesis (H1) is accepted while
the Null Hyphotesis (H0) is rejected. Based on the result above, the researcher
concluded that the use of IPA Symbol strategy can influence the students’
pronunciation ability of the third semester English Education Study Program of
Tomakaka University of Mamuju.
