RelativeTuning

(Tuning by Ear)

Relative tuning is the most common method of tuning the guitar. After getting a
reference pitch, the guitar is then tuned to itself.

1. Tune the 6th string to E below the middle C. If you have no piano, use a tuning
fork, someone else’s guitar, or somehow approximate E as best you can.
2. Press the 5th fret of the 6th string with your left hand. Tune the open 5th
string to this pitch.
3. Press the 5th fret of the 5th string. Tune the open 4th string to this pitch.
4. Press the 5th fret of the 4th string. Tune the open 3rd string to this pitch.
5. Press the 4th fret of the 3rd string. Tune the open 2nd string to this pitch.
6. Press the 5th fret of the 2nd string. Tune the open 1st string to this pitch.
