1st scene:

Setting: The parlor of the Mendoza house in Tondo. (The stage is occupied with a
sofa and two chairs and table.

Narrator:
It is about ten o’clock in the morning. Mrs. Mendoza notices a knock on her front
door. Taking off her apron, she mutters to herself who the person was. Mrs.
Mendoza, a gross, old-fashioned soul who has resigned herself to being
modernized by her daughter. Hence shows the stylish housedress, frilly hairdo, and
modern hairdo which look all incongruous on her.

Mrs. M: (walking towards the door) Visitors, always visitors, nothing but visitors all
day long. Naku, I’m beginning to feel like a society mah-tron.

----- She opens the door. Tony steps in carrying a bouquet. Tony is 26, dressed to
kill and is the suave type. Right now, Tony feels nervous seeing Mrs. Mendoza. ----

Mrs. M: Tony! I thought you were in the provinces.

Tony: But is that you, Aling Atang? (Tony staring closely at Mrs. M)

Mrs. M: I had my hair cut. Do I look so horrible? (Shyly touching her boyish bob)

Tony: Oh no, no… you look just wonderful, Aling Atang. For a moment I thought
you were your own daughter. I thought you were Kikay.

Mrs. M: Oh you are as palikero as ever, Tony. But come in, come in,
