I. INTRODUCTION & SPECIFICATIONS
Overview
The LINCO MEASUREMENT TA-500, & TA-1000 are temperature averagers. The Temperature Averager receives
pulses from a flow measuring device such as a PD(positive displacement) meter and as each pulse is received it very
accurately measures the temperature then adds the temperature into a rolling counter, divides the total temperature by
the number of readings and displays the average temperature(flow-weighted) for the batch. The acculumated
temperatures and the number of accumulated flow pulses may be cleared to start another batch.
The LINCO MEASUREMENT Temperature Averagers utilize a ceramic coated dual-thermistor probe and software
correction scheme such that no periodic calibration is required.
The LINCO MEASUREMENT Temperature Averagers may be powered from either 120vac or 12vdc and their low
power consumption allows operation from solar power.
The Linco Measurement, Inc. Temperature Averager technology has been proven reliable in field use for 20 years.
Flow Inputs
The flow input pulses may be either dry contact inputs or 120vac pulses.
Temperature Inputs
The temperature input(s) are from LINCO MEASUREMENT high accuracy dual-thermistor probe(s).
Alarm Output(s)
TA alarms may be activated by probe or probe wiring failure, or faulty temperature circuitry or measured temperature
out of range. The alarm output is a Form-C(SPDT) relay output. The normally-open contacts are usually used to
indicate an alarm caused by either a problem with the TA/TB or the alarm wires being severed.

IV. OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS:
The LINCO MEASUREMENT TA is a single channel (two channel option) micro-processor based temperature
averager that contains a forward (FWD) and reverse (REV.) switch mounted on the front panel to allow the operator to
scroll through or step through the displays. The LINCO MEASUREMENT TA provides seven displays (single
channel w/ second channel optional) to indicate all of the information available in the unit. When the forward (FWD)
switch is used to step to the end of channel #1 (or option channel #2), the next display position will be the beginning of
channel #1. This wrap function works in both directions and allows the operator to step easily and quickly to any
display. To change the display, depress the forward (FWD) or reverse (REV) switch in either direction until the desired
display appears and then release the switch.

A. DESCRIPTION OF DISPLAYS:
Note: When TA is first powered on, the display will default to screen #1 (#1 Cnt’s)
1. Displays 1 & 8 - Probe Temperature - A four digit display that indicates the current probe
temperature to the nearest 0.1 degree Fahrenheit.
2. Displays 2 & 9 - Pulse Input Counts - An eight digit display that indicates the total number of input
pulses or temperature samples.
3. Displays 3 & 10 - Total Temperature - An eight digit display that indicates the total accumulated
temperature. The displayed total temperature improved accuracy the internal total temperature
is stored to the nearest 0.1 degree Fahrenheit
4. Displays 4 & 11 - Average Temperature - A four digit display that indicates the average calculated
temperature to the nearest 0.1 degree Fahrenheit. This average is calculated by dividing the
internal total temperature by the total temperature samples (pulse inputs).
5. Displays 5 &12 - Rate Display – This display shows the number of input counts per hour based on the most
recent count input. The rate updates after each count input.
6. Displays 6 & 13 - Reset Totals - This display is used to reset the totals for each channel. A spring return "reset"
switch is provided (normally located inside the enclosure) to allow each channel to reset the
pulse input counts and total temperatures to zero. To reset, select the RESET TOTALS
display for the channel to be reset, then depress the "reset" switch for 4 to 5 seconds and
release. Scroll the display to counts (CNTS) and total temperature (TTEMP) to verify that the
totals have been reset to zero.
7. Displays 7 & 14 - Alarm Display - This display is used to indicate and clear all temperature related
alarms. The display will indicate NO ALARM or ALARM xxx to indicate alarm counts. The
alarms are initiated when the temperature is out of range during 4 or more input pulse counts.
Temperature alarms can be caused by probe failure, wiring or faulty temperature circuitry.
Alarm counts are stored in protected memory and will be remembered when power is removed
and then restored. Channels that have no input pulse counts will not alarm. To reset an alarm,
select the ALARM display for the channel in question and depress the "reset" switch for 4 to 5
seconds. The display should now indicate NO ALARM to verify that the alarm has been
cleared.
8
B. ALARM RELAY OPERATION:
1. The alarm relay is furnished epoxy sealed with 10 amp SPDT (single pole double throw) contacts that
should be connected through field wiring to shut down the metering equipment. The alarm relay is
energized when no alarm conditions exist to provide a "fail-safe" mode of operation.
2. The alarm relay will de-energize to signal an alarm on the following conditions:
b. AC or DC power failure.
NOTE: The LINCO MEASUREMENT TA is provided with a single alarm relay to operate if either
channel
fails. The "AL" option provides two independent alarm relays to operate each channel separately.
See Option Section.
9
V. INSTALLATION:
A. REQUIREMENT:
The following is required for proper installation of the LINCO MEASUREMENT TA:
1. The LINCO MEASUREMENT TA should be positioned for easy access and visibility, using the
four mounting lugs provided. It is important that the unit be installed away from any vibration.
2. Provide a power source of 115 VAC with 2 amp service or a power source of 12 VDC with 2 amp
service. An earth ground is required for either AC or DC operation. Sixteen (16) AWG wire is
recommended for wiring power to the LINCO MEASUREMENT TA.
3. If DC voltage is used, a 12 VDC power source is required. Should a DC voltage above 12 volts be
available, it will be necessary to install a converter that is capable of dropping the DC voltage to the 12
VDC required. If a converter is used, it should be installed as close as possible to the DC power supply
and should be wired in series with the positive power lead to reduce internal heat build up inside the
LINCO MEASUREMENT TA enclosure.
NOTE: A converter with a 24 VDC input and a 12 VDC output is available as an option to
the LINCO MEASUREMENT TA.
4. Provide a temperature probe input for one or both of the two channels supplied in the LINCO
MEASUREMENT TA. The temperature probe input requires three connecting wires for each probe.
TEMPERATURE PROBE WIRING MUST BE RUN IN DC CONDUIT SEPARATE FROM ANY
AC WIRING. Temperature probes may be located remote from the LINCO MEASUREMENT TA.
Wiring sizes are based on the temperature probe transmission distances. Transmission distances, up to
500 feet, will require a wire of 18 to 20 AWG. Distances of 500 to1200 feet will require a wire of 16
AWG. When installing the temperature probe in the field piping, it is recommended that a low point or
"drip loop" be provided in the conduit. The drip loop should be located below the temperature probe and
thermowell. This allows condensation to accumulate in the low point of the conduit instead of the probe.
Should condensation be allowed to accumulate in the temperature probe, a probe failure could occur.
**** PROBE WIRING MUST BE RUN IN DC CONDUIT SEPARATE FROM ANY AC WIRING. ****
NOTE: Each temperature averager is shipped with a resistor (18.7k ohms, 0.1% tolerance)
Connected across terminals 14 and 15 of terminal strip "TB1". This resistor is required anytime
channel #2 is not being used, to prevent scrolling problems. When channel #2 is used, simply
discard the resistor. The TA500 is not shipped with a resistor.
5. Provide a meter pulse input for one or both of the two channels supplied in the TA.
Only a single channel input is available for the TA500.
Each channel is independently programmable for either a DC "dry" (no external power source) contact
closure or a 115 VAC switched meter pulse operation. The 115 VAC switched meter pulse allows for
connection to most existing LACT Control Panels and eliminates the need for a separate meter
transmitter. A wire of 18 to 20 AWG is recommended for this service.
NOTE: AC and DC wiring should be run in separate conduits. If the DC (dry contact
closure) meter pulse option is used, it is permissible to run the interconnecting wiring in the
same conduit as the temperature probe wiring. When a common metallic conduit is used,
shielded cables are not required for short runs. When a long conduit runs is required, or if
conduit is run in close proximity to high current devices, shielded cable should always be used.
10
6. Connect the alarm relay output contact provided in the LINCO MEASUREMENT TA to shut down the
metering system on power failure, internal watch dog failure or temperature probe alarm. Contacts are
SPDT 10 amp dry sealed relay type. The alarm relay de-energizes on an alarm condition to provide "fail
safe" operation.
7. The LINCO MEASUREMENT TA is furnished with a removable terminal strip to facilitate field wiring.
Before any wiring is attempted, ensure that all power is disconnected. Ensure that all wiring connections
are secure and connected properly BEFORE POWER IS APPLIED. All electrical wiring should be
installed in accordance with the latest National Electric Codes and conform to all local code requirements.
NOTE: Seal all conduit openings entering the LINCO MEASUREMENT TA to help prevent moisture and corrosive
vapors from
entering the unit. Special moisture absorbing "desiccant packs" are recommended for high humidity
locations and areas with a corrosive atmosphere (see options). A heater option is also available.
B. STARTUP:
The following startup procedures are required for proper operation of the LINCO MEASUREMENT TA:
1. Before placing the LINCO MEASUREMENT TA in service, it will be necessary to position program
jumpers. (See wiring diagram at the end of this manual.) The jumpers are required to select the type of
meter pulse input required. The program jumpers required for meter pulse input are identified and
outlined on the appropriate electrical wiring diagrams depending on which type of meter pulse input is
selected, either AC or DC. The jumpers are located on the main circuit board, identified as "J1" and
include the following choices:
J1 Both Channels Shown
* * * * * *
AC
* * * * * *
DC
1. Channel #1 AC - Pins 1-2 for 115 VAC switched meter pulse input.
Channel #2 AC - Pins 4-5 for 115 VAC switched meter pulse input.
11
VI. TROUBLE SHOOTING PROCEDURES:
The LINCO MEASUREMENT TA Temperature Averager is designed to provide accurate temperature
measurements in an outdoor field environment. To simplify maintenance and troubleshooting, it is necessary to
isolate the problems and determine the component or condition responsible. Once this has been determined, the
defective component can be replaced or the condition can be corrected. To simplify field maintenance and circuit
board replacement, a removable terminal strip is provided that allows all field wiring to remain intact. Since the
LINCO MEASUREMENT TA automatically calibrates the temperature probe, NO CALIBRATION of any type is
required. Should a temperature probe fail for any reason, it is only necessary to replace the probe and the unit will
self calibrate.
**** WARNING - DO NOT MAKE ANY WIRING CHANGES WITH POWER APPLIED ****
A. Record all temperature data from the unit for future reference.
C. Remove the terminal strip by lifting away from the printed circuit board.
D. Unplug the display ribbon cable plug "J3" from the printed circuit board. The red lead should be to
the left (pin #1).
E. Remove the four mounting screws from the printed circuit board and remove.
F. Replace the printed circuit board and program all jumper plugs to match the unit that was removed.
12
VII. TROUBLE SHOOTING SYMPTOMS AND CORRECTIVE ACTIONS:
A. SYMPTOM - NO DISPLAY:
3. Remove the fuse and test with an ohmmeter - replace the fuse if it is open. For AC operations
check the 2 amp fuse "F1". For DC operation check the 2 amp fuse "F2". If a fuse is open, replace
with a 2 amp "microfuse" only.
4. Check to make sure that all ribbon cables are properly seated. Red leads connect to pin l of
connectors.
5. If the power source, fuses and cables are okay, replace the printed circuit board.
l. If the AC Fuse "F1" opens each time it is replaced, DO NOT install a larger fuse – instead replace
the printed circuit board and send the defective board into LINCO MEASUREMENT for service.
2. The LINCO MEASUREMENT TA may be subjected to periodic power surges. Install a Line filter in
the line
that provides power to the LINCO MEASUREMENT TA (see options).
1. Cycle "forward" (FWD) and/or "reverse" (REV.) switch slowly. If the display does not respond,
turn the power off for 1 minute and turn the power back on.
2. If the display still will not update, it will be necessary to replace the printed circuit board or the display
and harness.
1. Use a small common insulated screwdriver and adjust "VR1" for maximum contrast and readability at the
normal viewing angle. The potentiometer "VR1” is located in the upper left corner of the printed circuit
board. This adjustment is a combination of angle and contrast control. Use extreme caution if using a
metallic screwdriver so as not to contact any other components on the circuit board.
1. Make sure the display connector is completely inserted in the printed circuit board.
2. Wait for two minutes and check the display, since the display reinitializes every two minutes.
3. Remove power for 1 minute and then turn power back on. If the display is still distorted,
replace the display and/or the printed circuit board.
13
F. SYMPTOM - COUNTS DO NOT ADVANCE WITH FLOW:
2. Insure that the display updates. If not refer to DISPLAY DOES NOT UPDATE.
3. Check the wiring diagram to determine if the pulse input is wired for 115 VAC
operation or for DC (dry contact) operation.
4. Check program jumpers to make sure they agree with the LINCO MEASUREMENT wiring diagram for
either AC or DC (dry contact) operation.
5. For AC operation place a voltmeter across terminals 6 and 7 of terminal strip "TB1" for channel number 1
or across terminals 8 and 9 for channel number 2. The voltmeter should alternate between 115 VAC and
0 VAC for each unit of measure (barrels) while there is flow through the meter. If there is no AC voltage
or it remains at 115 VAC continuously, the problem is the equipment that is furnishing the meter pulse.
If voltage cycles properly with no advance of counts on the display, refer to step #7 and replace the
printed circuit board.
6. For DC operation place a voltmeter across terminals 6 and 10 of terminal strip "TB1" for channel
#1 or across terminals 9 and 10 for channel #2. The voltmeter should alternate between (five) 5 VDC and
0 VDC for each unit of measure (barrels) while there is flow through the meter. If there is no DC voltage
or it remains at 5 VDC continuously, the problem is in the equipment furnishing the meter pulse. If
voltage cycles properly with no advance of counts on the display, refer to step #7 and replace the printed
circuit board.
7. The count operation can be easily checked by removing field wiring from terminals 6 through 10 of
terminal strip "TB1" and programming both pulse inputs for DC operation. A voltmeter should read
approximately 5 VDC across terminals 6 and 10 (channel #1) and across terminals 9 and 10 (channel #2).
If either channel does not read voltage, then the printed circuit board is faulty. If voltage is present, cycle
the display to the CNTS position, jumper across terminals 6 and 10 (channel #1) or across terminals 9 and
10 (channel #2) for several seconds and then remove the jumper, the display should advance counts. If
the display advances then the unit is operating properly for DC (dry contact) operation.
1. Ensure that the display updates. If display does not update, counts may be lost. Refer to DISPLAY
DOES NOT UPDATE.
2. If counts are higher than normal, it may be caused by noise being generated from external high current
devices.
3. If counts are high and the pulse output is from an AC control panel, the pulses may be cycled
erroneously each time the unit is started and stopped.
4. If the AC power has occasional brown outs or power dips, the LINCO MEASUREMENT TA may be in
a protective sleep state, which can cause lost counts. If 98% or more counts are received, the average
temperature will be accurate. Extended brown outs, power dips or low voltage will alarm the system to
shut down by using the watch dog feature. The watch dog feature cycles the alarm relay until power is
restored to normal. This will help protect motors and other equipment from damage.
14
H. SYMPTOM - UNIT LOSES ALL TEMPERATURE AND COUNT DATA :
1. Cycle the display to the #1 ALARM or #2 ALARM (TA1000 only) position to determine which channel
alarmed and note the total number of alarm counts. Four or more alarm counts will de-energize the alarm
relay.
2. Clear the alarm using the "reset" switch. See displays #7 and #14.
3. Cycle the display to the #1 TEMP or #2 TEMP (TA1000 only) position. If the display shows TEMP
ERROR, the probe temperature could be out of range, the probe wiring or the printed circuit board may
be faulty. TEMP ERROR may also occur if there is no resistor (18.7 K ohms, 0.1% Tolerance) across
terminals 14 and 15 of terminal strip "TB1" when temperature channel #2 is not used.
4. Check the probe connections by gently pulling on the wires to the terminal strip to insure they are
securely fastened.
5. Check all probe field wiring for correct and secure connections.
6. Temporarily connect another temperature probe to the channel in question. If temperature reads
accurately, the probe or the field wiring is at fault.
7. (TA 1000 only) If another probe is not available, connect the probe in question to the other channel.
Cycle the display to the TEMP position of the other channel to read temperature. If temperature reads
accurately, the printed circuit board is at fault. If the display shows a TEMP ERROR or incorrect
temperature and the probe is wired correctly, then the probe or field wiring is faulty.
NOTE: Check the temperature probe base for any moisture content. If detected, the probe
should be replaced to ensure accurate temperature data.
15
VIII. STANDARD FEATURES AND EQUIPMENT:
The LINCO MEASUREMENT TA Unit includes the following standard features:
A. A single channel for temperature sample counts, total temperature sampled and average
temperature.
B. One fail-safe relay output contact to alarm if a temperature probe fails, an over or under temperature
condition occurs, a processor failure, a low voltage or a power failure should occur.
16
IX. OPTIONAL FEATURES AND EQUIPMENT:
A. SECOND TEMPERATURE PROBE CHANNEL (TA-1000)
1. The BS&W Control Option is available on the LINCO MEASUREMENT TB-1000 to provide divert
valve control. This option requires a second channel input for a BS&W detector connected to a BS&W
probe with a 0-5 VDC analog signal output and eliminates the need for a separate BS&W monitor and
housing. The purpose of the BS&W control option is to control the divert valve on a typical operating
LACT unit when the percentage of BS&W is greater than the programmed set point or when there is a
BS&W error (out of range).
2. The option uses a 0-5 VDC input to terminals 10 and 13 of terminal strip "TB1" on the LINCO
MEASUREMENT TB-1000 for displaying current BS&W on channel #2. See wiring diagram for proper
wiring connections.
3. Menu options allows the divert set point and the on divert time delay to be programmed as desired. The
divert set point is offered in ranges of 0-5% BS&W. The off divert time delay is approximately 10% of
the on divert time delay.
4. To change the Divert Set Point or the Time Delay use the forward or reverse switch to select the
"DIVERT SET" or "DIVERT TD SEC" display. Use the Up/Down-Reset switch located inside the
LINCO MEASUREMENT TA enclosure to increase or decrease the value for the divert set point or time
delay.
5. The BS&W control option provides four additional displays that include:
1. This option does not have a control feature and will display only the value of the 4-20ma signal from the
pressure transducer input. Channel #2 is modified to accept a 4-20 ma signal from a transducer using
terminals 10 and 14 of terminal strip "TB1" on the LINCO MEASUREMENT TP-1000. See wiring diagram
at the end of this manual for proper wiring connections.
2. Pressure Range Options:
0-150, 0-200, 0-500, 0-1500
3. Installation and trouble shooting procedures found in this manual for the LINCO MEASUREMENT TA
apply to these options with the exception of the display.
17
4. The display has been changed to reflect the output needed for the option requested and includes the
following:
1. The LINCO MEASUREMENT TA meter factor option (MFX) allows the operator to input a meter factor
and an API gravity (corrected to 60 degrees Fahrenheit). The LINCO MEASUREMENT TA then calculates
the net volume corrected to 60 degrees Fahrenheit.
2. The MFX option also allows the operator to change the meter factor and/or API gravity. The LINCO
MEASUREMENT TA will then recalculate the net volume corrected to 60 degrees Fahrenheit.
3. The MFX option uses an internal algorithm for API Table 6A - Generalized Crude Oil Volume
Correction Factors (API Manual of Petroleum Measurements Standards, Chapter 11.1, Volume X) that
calculates the volume correction factor (VCF) of crude oil, using the entered API gravity and average
temperature, for a temperature base of 60 degrees Fahrenheit. The operator can display the volume
correction factor (VCF) using the "forward" (FWD) or "reverse" (REV.) menu switch, located on the
front of the LINCO MEASUREMENT TA, to scroll to the VCF display.
4. The operator inputs the meter factor and the API gravity using the "forward" (FWD) and "reverse" (REV.)
menu switch, located on the front of the LINCO MEASUREMENT TA, to select the M.F. display for meter
factor and the API display. An "Up/Down-reset" switch, located inside the LINCO MEASUREMENT TA,
is used to increase or decrease the value of the meter factor or API gravity until it matches the required value.
5. To read the net volume, use the "forward" (FWD) or "reverse" (REV.) switch, located on the front of the
LINCO MEASUREMENT TA, to select the NET display. The net volume is calculated as Net Volume =
Counts x Meter Factor x Volume Correction Factor.
6. The MFX option provides four additional displays for each channel that include:
18
E. NET PULSE OUT OPTION
1. Add second relay and firmware for relay output for each net pulse.
F. 4-20MA OPTION BOARD (Linco #5569 Dual Ch. Or #7599 Single Ch.)
1. The 4-20ma option board is designed to output 4-20ma from the TA inputs (Requires +24vdc power).
A. Card Setup
.
1. Connect Card to an external 24vdc supply and wire output(s) to J1 connector.
2. Connect the ribbon cable from the TA-J2 to the 4-20ma card JB1
4. Attach a milliamp meter to pins CH1+, and CH1- on the 4-20ma card.
5. Scroll the TA display until [#1 4 ma] appears. Adjust CH1_ZERO pot for a 4ma output
6. Scroll the TA display until [#1 20 ma] appears. Adjust CH1_SPAN pot for a 20ma output
When the TA display is not on a setup screen for ch1 or ch2 (calibration screens), the 4-20ma card will output a
value for the programmed input parameters to the appropriate external device connected to the appropriate channel.
Caution:
Do not leave the TA on a calibration screen for either channel during normal
operations as the will cause the calibration value to be output and not the desired
value.
19
F. OTHER OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT:
1. Thermowell - Stainless steel with condulet for vertically mounting the probe.
2. Thermowell - Stainless steel with condulet for horizontally mounting the probe in a Smith Meter.
Includes an adapter for mounting in the same location as a Smith Meter thermal assembly (ATC or ATG).
4. Second Alarm Option, Alarm Relay for alarm contact output for each channel.
5. Explosion proof, NEMA 7 housing version for use in Class I, Groups C and D, Division I areas.
7. Remote communications software to poll addressable units for single or multi-drop communications to down
load the LINCO MEASUREMENT TA data to a portable computer terminal or to a computer connected via
telephone, dedicated line or radio link.
9. AC Line Filter to prevent noise problems with the LINCO MEASUREMENT TA and other sensitive
equipment
such as BS&W monitors.

options, INSURE that compatible hardware and software are available to communicate or to print reports.
Also, INSURE that correct interface cables and interface are provided. After connecting the proper interface
cabling and establishing the correct transmission protocol through the installed software, the system should
be ready for communication to remote computers or printers.
a. Computer Protocol - RS-232 Direct connect, 1200 baud, 8 data bits, no parity, and 1 stop bit
b. Printer Protocol - RS-232 serial printer set to 1200 baud, 8 data bits, no parity, and 1 stop bit
3. To establish communications with the LINCO MEASUREMENT TA, first enter a Ctrl Z. Depress the
CONTROL
key while simultaneously pressing the letter "Z", this will activate the LINCO MEASUREMENT TA main
menu screen.
CAUTION: Before entering the Main Menu Screen, the LACT Unit or the metering system should be disabled.
Anytime the Main Menu is accessed, the LINCO MEASUREMENT TA will not accept meter input pulses and will not
sample temperature. This means that no temperature averaging is being done while in the Main Menu. While in the
Main Menu Screen, an operator has approximately eight (8) seconds before the "Watch Dog" circuit activates the
Alarm Relay. If no entries are made within approximately fifteen (15) seconds, the system will time out and will
automatically return to normal operations. When the system times out, the “Watch Dog”, Alarm is automatically
reset.
NOTE: When entering selections, enter only the number (1 thru 9) associated with the option, and not the

TA-1000 MODBUS RTU COMPATIBLE
The standard LINCO MEASUREMENT “Temperature Averager” model TA-1000, has been upgraded to
include the MODBUS RTU Communications Protocol. This allows all TA-1000 data parameters to be
remotely accessed using standard SCADA packages that are MODBUS compatible.
This feature allows the user to trend, record, monitor, and verify the operation of a TA-1000
application providing the user with real time remote data acquisition from multiple sites.
Linco Measurement, Inc. has also developed a software SCADA package that can accompany the application of the TA-
1000 MODBUS version so that a complete “turn-key” SCADA application can be implemented.
The RS232 communications interface can be connected to Radio’s, Wireless Modems, RS232 to RS485 converters, or a
single PC.
