Impact of pH on Brine Shrimp Survival

Emily will conduct an experiment to determine how changes in acidity affect brine shrimp survival rates. She will create saltwater solutions with different pH levels in separate containers, ranging from the control group at natural pH to more acidic levels over time using white vinegar. She will observe and record the survival rates of brine shrimp populations in each container as the pH is varied. Emily hypothesizes that the group with a pH level closest to the control will have the highest survival rate.

Science Project Proposal Sheet

PROBLEM: How do changes in acidity affect the survival rates of an invertebrate population?

INDEPENDENT VARIABLE: pH Levels

DEPENDENT VARIABLE(S): Survival rate of brine shrimp populations

VARIABLES HELD CONSTANT: Amount of water, amount of yeast given, amount of brine

shrimp, size of containers

QUANTITATIVE MEASUREMENT: Ounces, teaspoons, and drops

EXPERIMENTAL PLAN: I will begin my project by researching pH levels of the water in

places where brine shrimp live. After obtaining all needed materials, I will start the experiment

by creating a saltwater solution for the eggs and then putting an equal amount of eggs into 4

separate containers. I will save one as the control group and change the pH level to about 7.5. I

will add drops of white vinegar to the other groups over a period of days. While adding drops, I

will also feed the shrimp an equal amount of yeast every other day.

POSSIBLE OUTCOME: I think the shrimp living in the water that has a pH level of 8.

POSSIBLE REASON: I think this because it is close to the pH of the control group.
