CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF THE RELATED LITERATURE

This Chapter presents related literature and studies that helped the

researcher gain insights and provide direction in the conceptualization of the

framework of the study.

Korean Influence is a Global Phenomenon that has been a hot topic in the

Philippines. Filipinos is very interested to this particular topic even the Adults

find this very interested that spreads different articles and opinion.

Filipinos seem to be embracing Korean culture. The increasing number of

Koreans also brought Korean Pop Culture to mainstream Philippines. Now, it is

already common to watch Korean Drama series on television and K-Pop songs on

the radio. As the Philippines engage on the popularity of the "Korean Wave" or

Hallyu through its cultural exports, there are expectations for the Koreans to

initiate more cultural activities in the Philippines. South Korea has organized

various initiatives to promote its culture among Filipinos. ("Holt", zyxpeha 2017)

Hallyu

Hallyu or Korean wave became so popular since 1990s. There are some ways

Korean influenced the Filipinos. One is The K-drama (Korean drama) refers to

televised dramas produced in South Korea that became popular throughout the

world and had greatly contributed to Hallyu before K-pop became so popular

(Wikipedia, 2013 para 1). Second,Clothing. Hanbok is a traditional clothing of

Korea. Young Koreans became so fashion-conscious that trends come and go and

even change from season to season (Korean Lifestyle, para 9). Third, K-pop, which
is an abbreviation of Korean Pop Music is a musical genre originated in South

Korea and is very popular since it is sung by systematically trained K-pop idols.

Fourth,Korean meals. Kimchi is the most popular and most essential of all.

Kimchi and Koreans are inseparable. Some households eat in a Westerner way

but there are still families who continue to eat a traditional meal. Bibimbap is

also famous Korean food in the Philippines, Bibimbap: This Korean lunch-in-a-

bowl mixes together a simple salad of rice, mixed vegetables, rice, beef and egg,

with sesame oil and a dollop of chili paste for seasoning (CNN travel 2018).

Koreans also had their own martial art—Taekwondo. It combines combat and

self-defense techniques with sport and exercise. It became as the world’s most

popular martial art in 1989 (Wikipedia, 2013).

Clothing Influence

It is very obvious that hallyu had brought great changes to Filipinos’ fashion.

Filipino youth became more concerned on how they look and they want to be “in

trend” (Korean Culture Invasion 2013). Most Filipino youth who are fashion-

conscious who lack budget for buying new clothes make use of their creativity

skills just to go with the trend (Korean Culture in the Philippines, 2011). Based

on the observation of the researcher, wearing K-pop inspired clothes is

compatible to most teenagers. In other way around Due to the want of most

Filipino teenagers to go with the trend that Korean fashion has popularized, they

are willing to sacrifices some things. Teenagers are eager to look weird as long as

they tried to copy the Korean hair, clothing style and shoes. Wearing K-pop

inspired clothes are sometimes “OA” since Filipinos are used to wear simple shirts

and jeans while today’s youth wear clothes with so many accessories that are

sometimes hinder the ease of movement (Korean Culture in the Philippines,

2011). they wear these kinds of clothing even during summer just to be said that

they are “in” with the K-pop and K-drama trend.

Korean Drama Influence

K-dramas are very popular for Filipinos. Korean dramas are undeniably

addictive. The plots can go from cliché but subtle to deep and unpredictable,

which is probably the main reason as to why it is very entertaining to the

Filipinos. The elements are also different in a good way, and the cinematography

is top class. ( SARAH JANE CASASOLA 2017)

Korean pop Music

K-Pop is short for “Korean pop music.” Ever since the financial crisis of 1997,

it has been one of South Korea’s most important cultural exports ( Cynthia

Green 2018) . Korean pop, or K-pop as it is also known, has been growing as a

phenomenon over the past few decades. Its slick songs draw on many genres that

interest some of the Filipino.
