The Concert
There was an announcement earlier in the morning
th th
about a workshop that was going to happen for 4 to 6
Grade. We were looking at each other uninterested for
another boring class. In a while we could see a person
walking in the corridor with a box. Our curiosity grew. We
came to know that he was a musician. We were amazed to
know that he could play several instruments . Later in the
evening we found out that it was a musical workshop! We
were looking forward to it. The workshop was interesting
as we could see that uncle who came could play
Several instruments. In the end of the workshop
they decided to play a song called Sunflower.
The concert began at 1:30 and everyone cheered
for the band. The students were ready with their
instruments. There were two violins, two keyboards,
two guitars , a Cajon , a flute and four outstanding
singers . The concert started with the chords of the
keyboards and the guitars. This was followed by the
violinists. The expressions of the violins reminded me of
the up - down movements of waves in the ocean . The
chords provided a strong foundation, like the
sea bed , for the waves to float on . The chorus
of the song vividly reminded me of the melodies
birds chirping over the turquoise sea .
I, being a part of the audience , am like a
sailor sailing in the middle of the sea and
experiencing the veritable music of nature. This
whole majestic dream was abruptly interrupted
by the “thump” of one of my friend’s hand on my
shoulder, who was trying to wake me up from my
dream of music during the concert . The music
sounded melodious .However, the electric guitar
drowned the combined efforts of all the other
participants. After this there was an acoustic
guitar solo that discretely harmonized with the
flute. The concert ended with a round of
applause.
A musical treat indeed!!1

Chennai Water Scarcity
Chennai residents suffered from lack of water, for the last
6 to 7 months. Due to this, several thousand people were
affected and it affected day to day activities, such as
cleaning and cooking etc. Several hotels and restaurants
shut down temporarily. Various industries were also affected
by shortage of water, as they had to provide alternate work
options to employees. Along with this, birds and animals
also suffered during this peak drought.
Main reasons
The experts attribute the unprecedented water scarcity to
four main reasons
Less rain
Pollution of water sources
Major wreck in rain harvesting system
Cutting down trees
Way forward
The government should bring strict regulations to conserve
water sources and tree. They should impose strict
punishments against who breaks these regulations. It should
be made mandatory to install rainwater harvesting system
across all buildings and apartments. The residents
themselves should become more responsible and waste no
water.

HLC International Science Fair
th
On June 28 at HLC , we all spoke science!!! June
had been a busy month for students - groups
discussing and teachers guiding them to put the best
display on their theme. Yes!! It was all for the science
fair. Soon after the school reopened, the students
brought their back to school enthusiasm directly to the
science expo.
Display on habitats:
This theme took us on a tour of information posters
and 3D models about an animal living in a particular
habitat and a model on marine habitat.

MUN
MUN – Model United Nations is like an United
Nation for children where each person represents
one country and discuss worldwide problems.
There are different committees who handle
different types of issues . For example, the
Brazilians burning down the Amazon Rain forest
comes under environmental issues .
Nitya, a student from Grade 11 of HLC remarked,
'It's fun, but there is lots of room for improvement
though it does help a lot with building different
skills. I recommend others to go only after they
reach Grade 8.' HLC sent twenty one students this
year and though their ideas haven't helped any
country so far, I think it will !

This exciting year, we had an event called “GENRE WEEK” on 19th August
2019. Parents were invited and teachers were encouraging us to do well.
What is genre?
A particular type or style of literature.
Types of genre
Adventure, Mystery, Fantasy, Sci-fiction, Historical-fiction, Realistic-fiction
and Poem
Our class did an adventure genre, a Sci-fiction skit, a poem and a mime.
The adventure genre was about a pirate who saves her friends from the sea
monsters. The Sci-fiction was about two explorers who find two aliens and
introduces them to their captain and commander. The poem was about
Atlantis and the mime was about a king and a queen, commanding
scientists, Cyclops and the army soldiers in Atlantis.
Other classes performed various skits and songs from different genres. The
highlight was the Salt Satyagraha
performed by Grade 4.
Finally, the genre week was concluded
by an interactive question and answer
session and one of my friend ended with
a speech about the performance of the
students.
SPORTS DAY YAY!!
13th and 14th of September.
We are the first when day's begun,
To catch the rays of morning sun;
Joy for being messed up,
Fun to play by being dressed up;
There stands Red house with merry,
Shining like a cherry;
There stands all in row
Like a ripen corn in yellow.
There stands in a bright hue
My dear friends all in blue.
There stand with eyes keen
A faithful team in green.
1...2...3...Run
Stood in shoes, the kids wondered
Which leg goes after which?
In the mind, seeing the pitch
Getting ready, when to run
On the track that stays hard
In the ground like a long yard
Dribble...Dribble...
Up on high
In the sky.
With a Bump and Dump
Oh! What fun.
Watching the hoops
of fire as bright round sun.
In an expert's way
There the ball that lay
Up in air, team was trying
With ball in hand, cleverest as flying.
Out...Jump...
Enough of fun Dodge ball yard.
Round and round
Hey turn around.
Up and down ,Out and in
Out and jump here they spin.
Kick...pass.
Kick and pass
Counting the closing minutes
Though the legs feel weak
Took there turns to pass and seek
Clothes and arms ,Face and Hair
Wet all over everywhere
Round 2
Four teams participated in this round. It was the semi– finals.
HLC was appreciated for their debating skills. However, they
got eliminated , as some technical rules were not met.
Round 3
PSBB, Nungambakkam School won the completion.
The Boy Who Changed The World
“Gotcha!”
The girls giggled and squealed. “Now , you hide
Norman!”
Norman ran to hide in the fields, careful not to knock
down any cornstalks. Just yesterday his father had
reminded him, “You know, son, we are blessed to have all
this corn. There are many people in the world who do
not have enough to eat.”
What would it be like to be hungry all the time? Norman
wondered as he looked at the endless rows of corn.
There has to be a way this corn can feed the hungry
people, he thought.
Right then and there, Norman decided to change the
world.
Norman learned everything he could about plants.
When he grew up, he worked for a man named
Mr. Wallace. Mr. Wallace said, “Norman, I want you to
use what you learned in school to make special seeds.
Those special seeds will grow into super plants and feed
more people than ordinary plants!”
To make the special seeds, Norman had to go to faraway
places and work in the rain and summer heat, but he
never gave up. Finally, Norman developed the special
seeds that grew into super plants!
Norman’s special seeds of corn and wheat and rice were
sent all over the world. Those special seeds grew into
super plants that fed the hungry people - just like
Norman dreamed about as a boy. And guess what?
Norman saved more than two billion people from
starving.
Two billion!
It’s true… Norman was the boy who changed the world!

JOURNEY OF KDBA
I just stood there in one place frozen, thinking, “Hey I just got
selected and am about to play for the Kancheepuram District
Basketball Team.!”
How awesome was that!
My teammate Harish tapped my shoulders, “Srinikesh, hey
Srinikesh!” I turned my head towards him and then only realized
that I hadn’t been moving.
He had a form in his hands. As he asked me my name and phone
number, I replied to him enthusiastically. I totally did not expect
me getting selected. We were asked to come to the Mahindra
World City, Pudupakkam for the camp.
It was fourteen of us who got selected for the camp in the
Mahindra World School which was located inside Mahindra
World City.
The place was very big. It took us three hours to just travel up and
down, which was pretty awful and boring. Vihaan, Dipin and I
carpooled.
After around ten days of camp, another person walked into the
court. He began chatting with the coach. I just thought he was a
friend or something, but when the coach asked us all to stand in a
line, I found it suspicious.
They began, picking!! I didn’t expect they would pick the team
that day. This was the last filtration. The person who get selected
will “actually” play for Kancheepuram District.
Well, I assumed that I already got selected to play for the district,
but no! I began to get nervous. He began selecting everyone
except, me and two others.
My heart was pounding inside my chest, I felt like I had to
hold it with both hands to prevent it from falling. As a droplet
of sweat raced down my face, I felt a trickle under my chin, and
goose bumps cracking my skin, made me look like I had
chickenpox.
Finally, they picked me!!
I was very excited and jogged towards my team and joined
them on a line. I felt bad for my two other friends who didn’t
get selected. We had three more days of camp and were having
parkour training.
We were informed that the district matches will happen in
Kamaraj College of Engineering and Technology, Virudhunagar.
It was so much fun travelling at night by bus with my friends
and coach. We arrived at the college and we were put up in a
big boys’ hostel. We had continuous matches, some very early
in the morning. We had lots of fun too as we were happy to
see all our parents cheer for us with a huge slogan banner.
Unfortunately, after a good fight in the semi-finals, we lost by
just two points.
Overall it was a wonderful learning experience, and we felt a
sense of responsibility arise in us. We the KDs will come back
with vengeance. Until next time……..
