Extract from a meeting of the British government's War Council,
January 1915

Discuss these questions in your groups.


1. How long did Churchill think the attack would last?
2. Did they have confirmation that Turkish submarines and Austrian ship
were in the Dardanelles?
3. Did they think the Turks would put up no resistance if the allies
destroyed key Turkish forts?
4. Did they take the risks in the document seriously?

1. Did Hamilton underestimate the geography at Gallipoli?
2. How does he describe the geography? Why did the naval attack fail?
3. Were Turks well prepared for the invasion?
4. What can Hamilton’s reaction to the geography tell about the planning
of the Gallipoli campaign?

1. After discussing the sources with your group of four, the whole class
will meet at the front of the class
2. Next, I will pose a question. Was poor planning or the geography of
Gallipoli the reason why the allies lost?
3. Next, Students who believe that poor planning was the reason will go
to the left side of the classroom, geography to the right.
4. Both sides will present their arguments, you must use excerpts from
the texts and you can also use the PowerPoint and text book from
additional information.
5. After your turn, three members on your side must speak before you
can speak again.
6. You must address the ideas of the opposing side (for example: I
disagree with that idea because________________________)

When we close and you return to your seats, with the arguments you’ve
heard, you will write a 5 sentence summary discussing if Gallipoli was
doomed to fail from the beginning?
