Hoverboards

A Hoverboard (or hover board) is a levitating board used for personal transportation in the films Back to the
Future Part II and Back to the Future Part III. Hoverboards resemble a skateboard without wheels. Through
special effects the film-makers depicted the boards hovering above the ground. During the 1990s there were
rumors, fueled by director Robert Zemeckis, that hoverboards were in fact real, but not marketed because they
were deemed too dangerous by parents' groups. These rumors have been conclusively debunked. Some
companies hoping to leverage the commercial success of the movies have marketed hovercraft vehicles as
hoverboards, but these products have not been shown to replicate the experience depicted in the movies.
Subsequent to the movies the hoverboard concept has been reused by many authors in various forms of
media in fictional universes not directly related to Back to the Future. An inventor has created a prototype,
magnetic hoverboard, the first of its kind outside of fiction able to provide an experience similar to those in
films, though only as a levitating skateboard; currently, as the new hoverboard is a prototype researched and
developed by individuals rather than significant companies, it is limited by technological and financial
constraints.

Several companies have drawn on hovercraft technology to attempt and create hoverboard-like products but
none have demonstrated similar experiences to those depicted in films.

Rumors circulated in 2001 that inventor Dean Kamen's new invention, codenamed Ginger, was a
transportation device resembling the Hoverboard. In reality Ginger was the Segway Human Transporter, a self-
balancing two-wheeled electric transportation device.

In 2004, Jamie Hyneman and his team built a makeshift hovercraft for MythBusters, dubbed the Hyneman
Hoverboard, from a surfboard and leafblower. However, Jamie's hoverboard was not very effective.

In 2005, Jason Bradbury created a "hoverboard" for The Gadget Show, using a wooden board that was
levitated by means of a leafblower. The original design was not propelled and could also not be steered. In
2009, a second version was made which was propelled/steered by a small jet engine (rather than a fan as with
an air boat), and also contained 2 (more powerful) leafblowers.

In 2011, French artist Nils Guadagnin has created a hoverboard that floats by magnetic repulsion between it
and its base but cannot carry a load. The board includes a laser system which ensures stabilization, in addition
to an electromagnetic system which makes the levitation possible.

In October 2011, a French university, l'université Paris Diderot, presented the "Mag surf", a superconducting
device which levitates 3 cm above two magnetized repulsing floor rails and can carry up to 100 kg.

In March 2014, a company called HUVr claimed to have developed the technology for hoverboards and
released a video advertising the product on YouTube featuring Christopher Lloyd, Tony Hawk, Moby, Terrell
Owens and others riding hoverboards through a parking lot in Los Angeles. Special effect failures such as
incomplete wire removal have conclusively identified the video as a hoax or joke, traced to the Funny or Die
website through identification of the cast and public references to the project.Funny or Die later posted a video
featuring Christopher Lloyd "apologizing" for the hoax.

In October 2014, inventor Greg Henderson demonstrated a prototype hoverboard working on a magnetic
levitation principle. Similar to maglev trains, the hoverboard requires a surface of non-ferromagnetic metal such
as copper or aluminum to function, carrying up to 300 pounds while hovering one inch above the surface. Four
engines were used to power the magnetic levitation, with the option of applying thrust and spin to the board
under user control. The prototype was promoted in a campaign on Kickstarter the day of the news coverage,
with a price of $10,000 for the first boards. The New York Times said that although the board worked, Greg
Henderson had no personal interest in skateboarding and that the kickstarter was "basically a publicity stunt",
designed to call attention to Hendo's magnetic levitation technology which Henderson was more interested in
using for other applications, such as an emergency maglev mechanism capable of raising buildings from their
foundations to protect them from earthquakes. Henderson was quoted as saying, "That’s why we picked the
hoverboard: to capture that attention. If one in 10 people realize there is another use for this stuff, that would
be a great success."

Utopias and Dystopias
Definitions
A utopia is a perfect world. In utopias, there are not problems like war, disease, poverty,
oppression, discrimination, inequality, and so forth. The word utopia is made-up from Greek
roots by Sir Thomas More. In 1516, More wrote a book called Utopia. Depending on the Greek
roots used, utopia can either mean 'no place' or 'good place.'

A dystopia, on the other hand, is a world in which nothing is perfect. The problems that
plague our world are often even more extreme in dystopias. Dystopia is a play on the made-up
word 'utopia' using the root dys, which means 'bad' or 'difficult.' Words like 'dysfunctional' or
'dyslexia' illustrate the use of this prefix.

Examples
As you probably guessed, examples of dystopias are much more common. After all, if fiction
writers could devise solutions to our world's biggest problems, such as world hunger, poverty,
and war, then we would probably have implemented them and be currently living in a utopia!
Another reason dystopias are more popular with writers is because they are, by their very
nature, full of conflict, an integral part of any engaging story.

Dystopias
Recent example of dystopias include The Hunger Games, written by Suzanne Collins in 2008,
which is about a lottery in which children are picked to fight to the death, and Divergent, a
2011 novel (adapted into a film in 2014) about a society split into five factions based on five
different personality characteristics as a method to retain control over human nature. As you
can no doubt tell, dystopian stories have found an increased popularity in the young adult
genre of literature.

There are many classic examples of dystopian stories, including Aldous Huxley's Brave New
World and Anthony Burgess' A Clockwork Orange. However, probably the most well-known
example of classic dystopian literature is 1984 by George Orwell, written in 1949. It's an
example of a dystopia in which British society, over time, became warped and transformed
into an extreme totalitarian state. In addition to controlling the press, the food, and
relationships of the state's inhabitants, the manipulation and control of human thought itself
is the goal of this regime. If you've ever heard a political pundit or other writer use the term
'thoughtcrime', 'doublethink', or 'Big Brother', you're hearing terms from 1984.

Utopias
In utopias, the biggest issues that case conflict have been solved: there is no longer war,
illness, poverty, or inequality. Sometimes a more enlightened group helps guide our society to
a better world, such as inChildhood's End by Arthur C. Clarke (1954), where a group of aliens
use their advanced technology and ideologies to help humans create a better society.

A week without seeing a screen could change how you look at the world. A new
study suggests that the ability to read nonverbal social cues can improve after
just five days away from computers and iPhones.

Researchers followed a group of about 50 sixth-graders to a nature camp in
Southern California. None of the campers could use computers or cellphones.

Nonverbal social cues are the emotional information we pick up from people that
is not spoken out loud. Cues can come in how people look at you or how they
sound.

Researchers are wondering whether children are losing the ability to read these
important cues. Children spend more time using electronics and less time
interacting face-to-face these days.

Looking At People Making Faces

Yalda Uhls works for a group focused on understanding Internet use. She also led
the study and wrote up the results. Uhls said the idea for the study came from
watching her daughter. She said she sees her daughter and her friends using
phones to interact while they are all in the same room.

Uhls and professor Patricia Greenfield found a sixth-grade class that goes to a
wilderness camp for five days. The researchers wanted to see children without
their electronics.

About 50 children attended the camp. When they arrived, they took two tests to
measure their ability to read nonverbal social cues. In the first, the kids were
asked to judge the feelings in 48 photos of people making faces. In the second
test, they watched a video with no sound and then judged the actor's feelings.

The kids took the tests again five days later. According to researchers, the kids
made an average of 14.02 mistakes on the face-recognition test at the beginning
of their camp stay. They thought the actors were feeling one way when they
actually felt a different way. Then, by the end of the camp the kids took the test
again. That time, they only made 9.41 mistakes.

On the video test, they correctly named about a fourth of the feelings at the
beginning of camp. After five days at camp, the students got 31 percent correct.

Uhls said the researchers were surprised to see those results after just five days.
She was encouraged by what they showed though. The results suggest that
putting devices away for five days is enough time to improve at reading social
cues.

Showing An Improvement

The researchers needed to compare the results at camp to kids who did not go to
camp. They gave the same test to 54 sixth-graders from the same school who had

not gone to camp. The group, which is called a control group, made an average of
12.24 mistakes the first time they took the photo test.

Like the group at camp, they made 9.81 mistakes five days later.

For the video test, the students’ scores stayed the same. Students in the control
group got an average of 28 percent of the feelings correct both times they were
tested.

The end results of the two groups were not that different. The group at camp
showed a larger improvement over the five days than the group of kids who did
not go to the camp.

Uhls said she noticed the groups' same end results. The researchers are focusing
on the change the kids showed over time because the groups started at different
levels.

Uhls and Greenfield said the results of their study suggest that it is important for
kids to spend time away from screens like computers, cellphones and TVs. It does
not necessarily suggest that all screen time is bad. They hope people understand
it's important that kids have time for talking face-to-face.

“It is really important to have a balance,” Uhls said.

Wounded Knee Massacre

The Wounded Knee Massacre is considered the last major conflict between the U.S. Army and Native
Americans. It was a one-sided battle where an overwhelming force of U.S. soldiers killed over 200
men, women, and children of the Lakota Indians.

When and where did it take place?

The battle took place on December 29, 1890 near Wounded Knee Creek in South Dakota.

Leading up to the Massacre

The arrival of European settlers had destroyed much of the culture of Native American tribes such as
the Lakota Sioux. The great bison herds, which the tribes had previously hunted for food, had been

hunted to extinction by white men. Also, treaties that the tribes had established with the U.S.
government had been broken and land guaranteed them by law had been taken.

Ghost Dance

Native Americans who wished to return to a life without foreigners formed a religious movement
called the Ghost Dance. They believed that by practicing the Ghost Dance the white invaders would
leave the land and things would return to the old ways.

Sitting Bull Is Killed

Some of the settlers were worried that the Ghost Dance would lead to violence. They decided to put a
stop to the dance by arresting the Native American leader Sitting Bull. When the arrest when wrong,
Sitting Bull was killed and several of his people fled to the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation.

Spotted Elk and His People are Surrounded

Sitting Bull's people joined up with a group led by Chief Spotted Elk. Spotted Elk's people decided to
journey to Pine Ridge and meet up with Chief Red Cloud. While on their journey, they were
surrounded by a large contingent of U.S. soldiers led by Colonel James Forsyth. Forsyth told Chief
Spotted Elk to set up camp near the Wounded Knee River.

The Massacre

Colonel Forsyth had around 500 soldiers. There were around 350 people with Chief Spotted Elk
including many women and children. Forsyth wanted to disarm the Indians and take their rifles. He
had his soldiers surround the Indian camp and then ordered the Indians to give up their weapons.

No one is quite sure what happened next. Many of the Indians gave up their weapons as asked. One
account of events says that a deaf warrior named Black Coyote refused to give up his rifle. He could
not hear the demands of the soldiers and struggled when they tried to forcibly take his gun. In the
struggle, the gun when off. The other soldiers panicked and began to fire. The Indians then fought
back. With the superior numbers and fire power of the soldiers, hundreds of Indians were gunned
down and killed.

Aftermath

Historians estimate that somewhere between 150 and 300 Indians were killed. Around half were likely
women and children. Chief Spotted Elk died in the battle as well. Around 25 soldiers were killed.

 Chief Spotted Elk was also known as Chief Big Foot.
 Today, the Wounded Knee Battlefield is a U.S. National Historic Landmark.
 In 1973, a group of Native American protesters called the American Indian Movement occupied
the small town of Wounded Knee. They held the town for 71 days calling for the United States
to uphold broken treaties.
 Twenty U.S. soldiers were awarded the Medal of Honor for their part in the fight. Today, Native
American groups have called for these medals to be withdrawn.

What is an Indian reservation?

What are the laws on a reservation?

Reservations are governed by the local Native American government. The tribe has its own laws,
police, and court system. Federal laws (laws of the U.S. government) do apply on reservations, but
state laws do not.

This is a pretty complicated question. While Indian reservations are a part of the United States, they
are, in some ways, considered their own nations with their own governments. They deal with the
United States government on a Nation-to-Nation level. At the same time, they must observe federal

The majority of the people living on a reservation are Native Americans who belong to the local tribe.
As of 2012, there were around 1 million Native Americans living on reservations. This was less than
half of the estimated 2.5 million Native Americans that live in the United States.

How many reservations are there?

There are around 326 Indian reservations in the United States. They make up a total land area of
56.2 million acres. This sounds like a lot, but it is only around 2.3% of the entire country.

The largest of the reservations is the Navajo Nation Reservation. It takes up 16 million acres of land
in Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico. A lot of reservations are much smaller. The smallest reservation
preserves the cemetery of the Pit River Tribe. It is just over 1 acre.

Treaties, Laws, and Relocation

Many reservations were created through various treaties between the U.S. government and local
tribes. Often the U.S. government broke with treaties and took land they had earlier promised to
Native Americans. In the 1800s, many eastern tribes were forced to relocate to lands in Oklahoma.

In the 1900s, new laws were passed to help protect the lands and the rights of Native Americans.
These included the Indian Citizen Act, the Indian Reorganization Act, and the Indian Civil Rights Act.

Life on a Reservation Today

Life on an Indian reservation today can be very difficult. Many of the people living on reservations live
in poverty. There is high unemployment, poor living conditions, and drug abuse. Many tribes have
tried to improve the local economy by building casinos as a tourist destination.

Preserving Native American Culture

Much of traditional Native American culture has been lost over the years. However, the people living
on many reservations do a lot to help preserve and renew the Indian way of life. Original arts and
crafts are still created on many reservations. Other important areas of the culture that are preserved
include Native American languages, ceremonies, dances, and traditional stories.

Native Americans lived in a wide variety of homes. Different tribes and peoples built different types of
homes. What kinds of homes they lived in depended on the materials that they had available where
they lived. It also depended on the kind of lifestyle that they lived as well as the environment.

The Teepee was easy to pack up and move

Lifestyle

Some tribes were nomads. This meant that the entire village would travel from place to place. This
was common for tribes living in the Great Plains where they hunted buffalo for food. The tribe would
follow the large buffalo herds as they roamed the plains. These tribes built homes that were easy to
move and build. They were called Teepees.

Other tribes lived in one place for a long time. This was because they had water and food nearby.
These tribes built more permanent homes like the pueblo or longhouse.

Wigwam Home

Wigwams were homes built by the Algonquian tribes of American Indians living in the Northeast. They
were built from trees and bark similar to the longhouse, but were much smaller and easier to
construct.

Wigwams used poles from trees that would be bent and tied together to make a dome shaped home.
The outside of the home would be covered with bark or other material that was available where the
natives lived. The frames were not portable, like the teepee, but sometimes the coverings could be
moved when the tribe moved.

Wigwams were relatively small homes that formed a circle around 15 feet wide. However, these
homes still sometimes housed more than just one Native American family. It was a pretty tight
squeeze, but probably helped keep them warm in the winter.

A home similar to the wigwam was the wikiup which was built by some tribes in the west.

The hogan was the home built by the Navajo people of the Southwest. They used wooden poles for
the frame and then covered it in adobe, clay mixed with grass. It was generally built in a dome shape
with the door facing the east toward the sunrise. There was also a hole in the roof for the smoke of
the fire to escape.

Other Native American Homes


 Plank house - Built by the natives in the Northwest near the coast, these homes were made
from planks of a wood called cedar. Several families would live in a single home.
 Igloo - Igloos were homes built by the Inuit in Alaska. Igloos are small domed homes made
from blocks of ice. They were built to survive the cold winters.
 Chickee - the chickee was a home built by the Seminole tribes. The chickee had a thatched
roof to keep the rain off, but had open sides to keep cool in the hot weather of Florida.
 Wattle and daub - This home was similar to the chickee, but had walls filled in using twigs and
clay. It was built by tribes in the northern, slightly colder, area of the Southeast like the
Cherokee in North Carolina.

Teepee, Longhouse, and Pueblo Homes

Native American Teepee

Teepees were the homes of the nomadic tribes of the Great Plains. A teepee was built using a
number of long poles as the frame. The poles were tied together at the top and spread out at the
bottom to make an upside down cone shape. Then the outside was wrapped with a large covering
made of buffalo hide.

When the tribe arrived at a new spot, the woman of each family would set up and build the teepee.
Building a teepee was very efficient and typically only took around 30 minutes to set up.

In the summer the covering would be raised to allow for a large gap at the bottom. This gap enabled
cool air to flow through the teepee and keep the inside cooled.

In the winter additional coverings and insulation such as grass were used to help keep the teepee
warm. In the center of the teepee, a fire would be built. There was a hole at the top to let out the
smoke. The Plains Indians also used buffalo hides for their beds and blankets to keep their homes
warm.

Native American Longhouse

The longhouse was a type of home built by the American Indians in the Northeast, particularly those
of the Iroquois nation. Another name for the Iroquois was Haudenosaunee which meant "People of

Longhouses were permanent homes built from wood and bark. They get their name because they
were built in the shape of a long rectangle. Usually they were around 80 feet long and 18 feet wide.
They had holes in the roof to allow for the smoke from fires to escape and a door at each end.

To build the longhouse home, tall poles from trees were used to frame in the sides. At the top the
natives used curved poles to build the roof. The roof and sides were then covered with overlapping
pieces of bark, like shingles. This helped to keep the rain and wind out of their homes.

A large village would have several longhouses built inside a wooden fence called a palisade. Each
longhouse was home to a number of people in a group called a clan. Perhaps 20 people or more
called a single longhouse home.

Native American Pueblo

The pueblo was a type of home built by American Indians in the Southwest, especially the Hopi tribe.
They were permanent shelters that were sometimes part of large villages that housed hundreds to
thousands of people. Often they were built inside caves or on the sides of large cliffs.

Pueblo homes were built of bricks made from adobe clay. The bricks were made by mixing clay, sand,
grass, and straw together and then setting them in the sun to harden. Once the bricks were hard, they

would be used to build walls which were then covered with more clay to fill in the gaps. To keep the
walls of their homes strong, every year a new layer of clay would be placed on the walls.

A pueblo home was made up of a number of clay rooms built on top of each other. Sometimes they
were built as high as 4 or 5 stories tall. Each room got smaller the higher the pueblo was built.
Ladders were used to climb between the floors. At night they would remove the ladders to keep
others from coming into their house.

Clothing

Native American clothing prior to the arrival of Europeans was different depending on the tribe and
the climate where the tribe lived. However, there were some general similarities.

What materials did they use?

The primary material used by Native Americans in their clothing was made from animal hides.
Generally they used the hides of the animals they hunted for food. Many tribes such as the Cherokee
and Iroquois used deerskin. While the Plains Indians, who were bison hunters, used buffalo skin and
the Inuit from Alaska used seal or caribou skin.

Some tribes learned how to make clothing from plants or weaving thread. These included the Navajo
and Apache, who learned how to make woven blankets and tunics, and the Seminole of Florida.

How did they make the clothes?

All of their clothes were made by hand. The women would generally make the clothes. First they
would tan the animal skin. Tanning is a process that would turn the animal skin into leather which
would last a long time and not decompose. Then they would need to cut and sew the leather into a
piece of clothing.

Decorations

Often times clothing would be decorated. The Native Americans would use feathers, animal fur such
as ermine or rabbit, porcupine quills, and, after the Europeans arrived, glass beads to decorate their
clothes.

What clothing did the men wear?

Most Native American men wore a breechcloth. This was just a piece of material that they tucked into
a belt that would cover the front and back. In many areas, especially areas with warm climates, this
was all the men wore. In cooler climates, and in the winter, the men would wear leggings to cover up
and keep their legs warm. Many men went shirtless throughout much of the year, only wearing cloaks
when it got very cold. The Plains Indian men were known for their elaborate and decorated war
shirts.

What clothing did Native American women wear?

The Native American women generally wore skirts and leggings. Often they wore shirts or tunics as
well. In some tribes, like the Cherokee and the Apache, the women wore longer buckskin dresses.

The Moccasin

Most Native Americans wore some kind of footwear. This was usually a shoe made of soft leather
called a moccasin. In the cold northern areas like Alaska, they wore a thick boot called a mukluk.

Later Changes

When the Europeans arrived many of the American Indian tribes were forced into contact with each
other. They began to see how others dressed and took the ideas that they liked. Soon many tribes
began to dress more alike. Woven blankets, fringed buckskin tunics and leggings, and feather
headdresses became popular among many tribes.

King Philip's War
King Philip's War is sometimes called the First Indian War. It took place between 1675 and 1678.

Who fought in King Philip's War?

King Philip's war was fought between the English colonists of New England and a group of Native
American tribes. The main leader of the Native Americans was Metacomet, chief of the Wampanoag
peoples. His English nickname was "King Philip." Other tribes on the side of the Native Americans
included the Nipmuck, Podunk, Narragansett, and Nashaway peoples. Two Native American tribes,
the Mohegan and the Pequot, fought on the side of the colonists.

Where was it fought?

The war was fought throughout the Northeast including Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island,
and Maine.

Battle of Bloody Brook


Leading up to the War

For the first 50 years after the Pilgrims arrived at Plymouth in 1620, the English colonists had a fairly
peaceful relationship with the local Native Americans in New England. Without the help of the
Wampanoag people, the Pilgrims would have never survived the first winter.

As the colonies began to expand into Indian territory, the local tribes became more concerned.
Promises made by the colonists were broken as more and more people arrived from England. When
the chief of the Wampanoag died while in captivity in Plymouth Colony, his brother Metacomet (King
Philip) became determined to drive the colonists out of New England.

Major Battles and Events

The first major event of the war was a trial in Plymouth Colony that resulted in the execution of three
Wampanoag men. Metacomet had already been preparing for war, but it was this trial that caused him
to first attack. He attacked the city of Swansea, burning the town to ground and killing many of the
settlers. The war had begun.

Over the course of the next year, both sides would mount attacks against each other. The colonists
would destroy an Indian village and then the Indians would respond by burning down a colonial
settlement. Around twelve colonial towns were completely destroyed during the fighting.

One particularly bloody battle is called the Great Swamp Fight which took place in Rhode Island. A
group of colonial militia attacked the home fort of the Narragansett tribe. They destroyed the fort and
killed around 300 Native Americans.

Benjamin Church
End of the War and Results

Eventually, the greater numbers and resources of the colonists allowed them to take control of the
war. Chief Metacomet tried to hide in the swamps in Rhode Island, but he was hunted down by a
group of colonial militia led by Captain Benjamin Church. He was killed and then beheaded. The
colonists displayed his head at Plymouth colony for the next 25 years as a warning to other Native
Americans.

Consequences

The war was devastating for both sides. Around 600 English colonists were killed and twelve towns
completely destroyed with many more towns suffering damages. The Native Americans had it even
worse. Around 3,000 Native Americans were killed and many more were captured and shipped off to
slavery. The few Native Americans left were eventually forced off their lands by the expanding
colonists.

Interesting Facts about King Philip's War


 King Philip (Metacomet) was named after the Ancient Greek King Philip of Macedonia.
 The English colonists largely fought the war without the help of the King of England.
 Over half of the 90 or so towns in New England were attacked at some point during the war.
 King Philip was shot and killed by an Indian named John Alderman who had allied with the
colonists.
 Although King Philip was killed on August 12, 1676, the fighting continued in some areas until
a treaty was signed in 1678.

The Constitution

The Constitution is the framework for the federal government of the United States. It is the highest
form of law in the country. The Constitution creates the branches of government and gives them the
power to govern. However, it also protects the citizens of the United States and guarantees their
basic rights.

History of the Constitution

Articles of Confederation

The first Constitution was called the Articles of Confederation, which was ratified in 1781. The Articles
of Confederation had issues, however. The main issue was that the government had no money or
way to get money under the Articles. The army wasn't being paid and was deserting. Debts to foreign
countries weren't being paid. The government became too weak and a new constitution was needed.

Constitutional Convention

In May of 1787 the Constitutional Convention gathered to discuss changes to the Articles of the
Confederation. After some debate it became apparent to the representatives that a new Constitution
was needed. A lot of the debate was held in secret so that the delegates would feel free to speak their
minds.

A primary aim of the Constitution was to create a government that would be powerful enough to run
the country, but would not impose on people's or state's rights. To avoid too much power being held
by one person or group, they created the Balance of Power between the three branches of
government: Executive, Legislative, and Judicial.

There were two primary competing plans for the Constitution:

Virginia Plan - The Virginia plan was written by James Madison. It represented the desires of the
larger states and said that the number of representatives to Congress should be based on the state's
population.

New Jersey Plan - The New Jersey plan was written by William Paterson from New Jersey. It
represented the smaller states and said that each state should have the same number of
representatives.

In the end, an agreement was reached called The Great Compromise. This allowed the number of
representatives to the House be based on the state's population while each state would have two
representatives in the Senate.

The Bill of Rights

The Bill of Rights are the first 10 amendments to the United States Constitution. The idea behind the
Bill of Rights was to insure certain freedoms and rights to the citizens of America. It put limits on what
the government could do and control. Freedoms protected include freedom of religion, speech,
assembly, the right to bear arms, unreasonable search and seizure of your home, the right to a
speedy trial, and more.

Many delegates of the states were against signing the Constitution without a Bill of Rights included. It
became a major issue in ratifying the Constitution in some states. As a result,James Madison wrote
12 amendments and presented them to the First Congress in 1789. On December 15, 1791 ten of the
amendments were passed and made part of the Constitution. They would later become known as the
Bill of Rights.

The Bill of Rights was based on several previous documents including the Magna Carta, the Virginia
Declaration of Rights, and the English Bill of Rights.

The First Amendment - states that Congress shall make no law preventing the establishment of
religion or prohibiting its free exercise. Also protected are freedom of speech, freedom of the press,
freedom of assembly, and the right to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

The Second Amendment - protects citizen's right to bear arms.

The Third Amendment - prevents the government from placing troops in private homes. This was a
real problem during the American Revolutionary War.

seizure of the property of US citizens. It requires the government to have a warrant that was issued
by a judge and based on probable cause.

The Fifth Amendment - The Fifth Amendment is famous for people saying "I'll take the Fifth". This
gives people the right to choose not to testify in court if they feel their own testimony will incriminate
themselves.

In addition this amendment protects citizens from being subject to criminal prosecution and
punishment without due process. It also prevents people from being tried for the same crime twice.
The amendment also establishes the power of eminent domain, which means that private property
can not be seized for public use without just compensation.

The Sixth Amendment - guarantees a speedy trial by a jury of one's peers. Also, people accused are
to be informed of the crimes with which they are charged and have the right to confront the witnesses
brought by the government. The amendment also provides the accused the right to compel testimony
from witnesses, and to legal representation (meaning the government has to provide a lawyer).

The Seventh Amendment - provides that civil cases also be tried by jury.

The Eighth Amendment - prohibits excessive bail, excessive fines, and cruel and unusual
punishments.

The Ninth Amendment - states that the list of rights described in the Constitution is not exhaustive,
and that the people still have all the rights that are not listed.

The Tenth Amendment - gives all powers not specifically given to the United States government in
the Constitution, to either the states or to the people.

Executive Branch - The
President

The leader of the Executive Branch is the President of the United States. The President holds all the
power for this branch of the government and the other members report to the President. Other parts
of the Executive branch include the Vice President, the Executive Office of the President, and the
Cabinet.

The President

The President is seen as the leader of the US Government and is both the head of state and the
Commander-in-Chief of the US armed forces.

One of the main powers of the President is the power to sign legislation from Congress into law or to
veto it. A veto means that, even though congress voted for the law, the President does not agree. The
legislation can still become a law if two-thirds of both the houses of Congress vote to overturn the
veto. This is all part of the balance of powers put into place by the Constitution.

One of the jobs of the President is to enforce and implement the laws set in place by Congress. To do
this there are federal agencies and departments that work for the President. The President appoints
the heads or leaders of these agencies. Some of these people are also on the President's Cabinet.

To further balance power and to keep too much power from any one person, any person is limited to

The main job of the Vice President is to be ready to take over for the President if something should

The President has a LOT to do. To help with the many duties of the President, the Executive Office of
the President (also called the EOP for short) was created in 1939 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
The White House Staff heads up the EOP and has many of the President's closest advisors. Some of
the EOP positions, like the Office of Management and Budget, are approved by the Senate, other
positions are just hired by the President.

The EOP includes the National Security Council, which helps to advise the President on issues such
as national security and intelligence. Another part of the EOP is the White House Communications
and Press Secretary. The Press Secretary gives briefings on what the President is doing to the press,
or media, so that the people of the US can stay informed.

All in all, the EOP helps to keep the Executive Branch running smoothly despite it's wide range of

The US Cabinet

The Cabinet is a group of the President's top advisors. It is made up of the heads of the 15 main
executive departments. Each of the department heads has the title Secretary, like Secretary of
Defense or Secretary of Education, except for the head of the Justice Department who is called the
Attorney General.

Cabinet members are chosen by the president and the confirmed by the Senate. The president can
also remove cabinet members at any time. The Cabinet members are some of the most powerful
people in the United States and each of their departments is important in the running of our country.

The Cabinet has a long history all the way back to the first President, George Washington. President
Washington appointed a Cabinet of four people to help and advise him. The first Cabinet
included Thomas Jefferson (Secretary of State), Alexander Hamilton (Secretary of the Treasury),
Henry Knox (Secretary of War), and Edmund Randolph (Attorney General).

Department of Agriculture

You may know this department by it's shortened name, the USDA. The USDA plays an important
role in overseeing farming and our food. They make sure that our food is safe and properly grown

Department of Commerce

This department works on promoting the nation's economy. They do this by running programs that
help technological innovation, supporting business and industry, and issuing patents and
trademarks. The Department of Commerce also assists in international trade agreements and
runs our telecommunications and technical policies.

Department of Defense

This department provides the military that defends our country. It includes the Army, Navy, and Air

Department of the Interior

Legislative Branch -
Congress

The Legislative Branch is also called the Congress. There are two parts that make up Congress:
the House of Representatives and the Senate.

The Legislative Branch is the part of the government that writes up and votes on laws, also called
legislation. Other powers of the Congress include declaring war, confirming Presidential
appointments for groups like the Supreme Court and the Cabinet, and investigating power.

House of Representatives

There are 435 total Representatives in the House. Each state has a different number of
representatives depending on their total population. States with more people get more
representatives.

Representatives are elected every two years. They must be 25 years old, have been a US citizen
for at least 7 years, and live in the state they represent.

The Speaker of the House is the leader of the House of Representative. The House elects the
member they want to be the leader. The Speaker is third in line in succession to the President.

The Senate

The Senate has 100 members. Each state has two Senators.

Senators are elected every 6 years. To become a Senator a person must be at least 30 years old,
have been a US citizen for at least 9 years, and must live in the state they represent.

Making a Law

For a law to be made it must go through a bunch of steps called the Legislative Process. The first
step is for someone to write a bill. Anyone can write a bill, but only a member of Congress can
present it to the Congress.

Next the bill goes to a committee that is an expert on the subject of the bill. Here the bill may be
rejected, accepted, or changed. The bill may go to a number of committees. Experts are often
brought in to witness and give their opinions on the pros and cons of a bill. Once the bill is ready
and the committee agrees, it goes before the entire Congress.

Both the House and the Senate will have their own debates about the bill. Members will speak for
or against the bill and then the Congress will vote. A bill must get a majority of the votes from both
the Senate and the House of Representatives to pass.

The next step is for the President to sign the bill. The president can sign the bill into law or choose
to veto the bill. Once the president veto's a bill, congress can then try to override the veto by
getting two thirds of the vote from both the House and the Senate.

Other Powers of Congress

In addition to making laws, congress has other responsibilities and powers. These include creating
an annual budget for the government and taxing the citizens to pay for it. Another important
congressional power is the power to declare war.

The Senate has the specific job to ratify treaties with other countries. They also confirm
presidential appointments.

Congress also performs government oversight. They are supposed to make sure that the
government is spending the tax money on the right things and that the different branches of

Part of the Congress

The House of Representatives is one of the chambers of Congress that comprises the Legislative
Branch of the United States government. The other chamber is the Senate. Having two chambers of
Congress is called a "bicameral" legislature. The House of Representatives is sometimes just referred
to as "the House" or the "lower" chamber of Congress.

How many Representatives are there?

There are currently 435 representatives in the House. In the very first Congress there were only 65
representatives. The total number grew over time as new states joined the country and the population
grew. However, in 1911, the Congress decided that the House was getting too big. They passed a law
limiting the total number of representatives to 435.

The number of representatives from each state is determined by the population of the state. The
more people that live in the state, the more representatives that state has. Every state has at least
one representative no matter how small it is.

How long can someone be a Representative?

Representatives are elected to a new term every two years. In order to remain a representative, a
person must get re-elected each time. However, there are no term limits, so a person can be a
representative for as long as they continue to get elected.

Senate Leadership
 President: The United States Vice-President also serves as President of the Senate. The Vice-

over the Senate.
 Majority Leader - The Majority Leader is elected by the political party with the most Senators

 Whips - Each party also has an assistant leader called the party whip. The whip tries to keep
the members of the party in line so they will vote along with the rest of the party.

Debates and Filibusters

When a bill is up for a vote, the Senate will debate the pros and cons of the bill. When a Senator
speaks they talk to the presiding officer. They are not allowed to use the names of other Senators, but
refer to them by their position such as "the distinguished Senator from Georgia."

There is no restrictions on how long a debate can last in the Senate. As a result, sometimes Senators
will try to delay the vote on a bill by giving a really long speech. This is called a filibuster. A filibuster
can be stopped if three-fifths of the Senators vote to end it. This is called cloture.

Special Senate Powers

The main job of the Senate is to vote on new laws along with the House of Representatives.
However, the Senate has some unique powers that the House does not have:
 They approve some appointments made by the President including Cabinet members,
Supreme Court Justices, and high-ranking military commanders.
 They ratify treaties with foreign governments.
 They try cases of impeachment of federal officers that have been impeached by the House.

How Laws are Made
The U.S. government has a number of laws that help to keep order and protect the people of the
country. Each new law must be agreed upon by both houses of Congress and the President. Every
law goes through a specific process before it is officially a new law of the country.

An Idea

Each law starts out as an idea. These ideas can come from many different places including special
interest groups, the President, members of Congress, and regular citizens.

Writing a Bill

The next step is that the idea must be written down and explained. This first draft of the idea is called
a bill. The bill then needs a member of Congress to sponsor the law. The sponsor is someone who
believes strongly in the bill and wants to see it turned into a law. The sponsor can either be a Senator
or a member of the House of Representatives.

Introduction in Congress

The sponsor then introduces the bill either to the House or the Senate. Once the bill has been
introduced it is assigned a number and officially recorded as a bill.

Committee

After being introduced, the bill is sent to a committee. Committees are smaller groups of congress
that are experts in certain areas. For example, if the bill has to do with the classroom size in public
schools then it would be sent to the Committee on Education. The committee discusses the details of
the bill. They bring in experts from outside the Congress to give testimony and debate the pros and
cons of the bill.

Before passing the bill, the committee may decide to make changes. If the committee finally agrees to
pass the bill, it will then move on to the main chamber of the House or Senate for approval.

House Approval

If the bill began in the House it will first go to the House for approval. The representatives will discuss
and debate the bill. Then the members of the House will vote on the bill. If the bill passes, then it will
be sent to the Senate.

Senate

The Senate will then go through the same process. It will discuss and debate the bill and then take a
vote. If the bill passes through the Senate, it will then be sent to the President.

President

The final step in a bill becoming a law is the president's signature. Once the president signs the bill,
then it officially becomes a law.

Veto

The president can decide to not sign the bill. This is called a veto. The Senate and House can choose
to override the president's veto by taking another vote. In order to override the veto, however, the bill
must now pass both the Senate and House by a two-thirds majority.

The president has 10 days to sign a bill into law. If he doesn't sign it within 10 days then one of two

Judicial Branch - The Supreme
Court
The Judicial Branch of the government is made up of judges and courts. The judges are not elected
by the people like the president and members of congress; they are appointed by the president and
then confirmed by the Senate.

There is a hierarchy of federal courts in the United States. District courts cover area of the countries
and handle most of the federal cases and the first level of trials. Above them is the 13 courts of
appeals. At the top of the Judicial Branch is the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court has the final say.

Federal judges are appointed for life. They can only be removed from office by death or by
impeachment from Congress. This is to allow judges to make decisions based on their conscience
and not on what they feel they need to do to get elected.

The job of the courts is to interpret the laws of the Congress. They do not make laws. They also only
make decisions on actual cases where someone has shown that they have been harmed.

The Supreme Court

The highest court in the United States is the Supreme Court. The Constitution doesn't say how many
Supreme Court Justices there should be. There have been as few as 6 justices in the past, but since
1869 there have been 9 justices.

The President nominates all the Supreme Court members and the Senate confirms them. They hold
their offices for life.

The Supreme Court doesn't have a lot of trials. What they mostly do is review cases that have been
appealed from the lower courts. Not all cases that are sent to the Supreme Court are reviewed.
Around 7,500 requests are sent to the Supreme Court each year and they only consider around 150
important enough to review.

The Judicial Process

The Constitution states that every person has the right to a fair trial before a competent judge and a
jury of their peers. The Bill of Rights adds to this guaranteeing other rights such as a speedy trial, the
right to legal representation, the right not to be tried for the same crime twice, and protection from
cruel punishments.

Once arrested for a crime, the accused will get to appear before a judge to be charged with the crime
and to enter a plea of guilty or not-guilty.

Next the accused is given a lawyer, if they can't afford their own, and is given time to review the
evidence and build up their defense. Then the case is tried before a judge and a jury. If the jury
determines that the defendant is not-guilty, then charges are dropped and the accused goes free. If
the jury has a guilty verdict, then the judge determines the sentence.

If one side feels that the trial wasn't handled correctly or fairly, they can appeal to a higher court. The
higher court may overturn the decision or keep it the same. The highest court is the Supreme Court.
There is no appealing a Supreme Court decision.

Landmark Supreme Court Cases
What is a landmark case?

Landmark cases are important Supreme Court cases where the decisions made on the cases had
a lasting impact on the law and future cases.

Why are they important?

Landmark cases are important because they change the way the Constitution is interpreted. When
new cases are brought before the courts, the decisions made by the Supreme Court in landmark
cases are looked at to see how the judge shall rule. Lawyers cite landmark cases to prove a point
and judges cite them to justify their decisions.

Examples of Landmark Cases

There have been a number of landmark cases throughout the history of the Supreme Court.
We've listed a few below and described why they are considered important.

Marbury v. Madison (1803)

This case is probably the most important case in the history of the Supreme Court. With this case
the Supreme Court claimed the power of "judicial review." This is the power to declare laws made
by Congress unconstitutional. This power was not given to the Supreme Court by the

McCulloch v. Maryland (1819)

This important case rose to the Supreme Court when the state of Maryland tried to tax the Bank of
the United States. Maryland claimed that the Constitution did not give the federal government the
right to create a bank. However, the Supreme Court ruled that the Constitution gave the federal
government certain implied powers that are not specifically stated.

Dred Scott v. Sandford (1857)

This ruling said that all African Americans, both slaves and free, were not legal citizens of the
United States. This meant that they could not sue in federal court. It came about when a slave
named Dred Scott tried to sue for his freedom when his owner moved him to a free state and then
back to a slave state. The Fourteenth Amendment turned this decision around. Today,Dred Scott
v. Sandford is considered by many to be one of the worst rulings in the history of the Supreme
Court.

Plessy v. Ferguson (1896)

Another case that is now infamous for how bad it was, is Plessy v. Ferguson. This case ruled that
segregation based on race was legal. It is famous for using the ruling of "separate but equal" by
saying that railway cars could be separated between black people and white people. The ruling
was later turned down by the case of Brown v. Board of Education.

Brown v. Board of Education (1954)

In this case, the court ruled that having separate public schools for black students and white
students was unconstitutional. This made segregation in public schools illegal and paved the way
to end racial segregation in general. Future Supreme Court justice Thurgood Marshall was the
lead lawyer for the NAACP who argued the case before the court.

Miranda v. Arizona (1966)

This case ruled that suspects of a crime could not be questioned until they had been read their
rights. This led to the Miranda Warning where police officers tell a suspect something like "you
have the right to remain silent, anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.
You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be provided to you."

U.S. v. Nixon (1974)

In this case, the Supreme Court said that President Richard Nixon had to turn over tapes
regarding the Watergate scandal. This ruling set the precedent that the president is not above the
law and set limits as to the power of the president.
