SIZE AND SERIES SELECTION PROCEDURE EXAMPLE:

Select a Variable Spring for the following conditions:
The key criteria in selecting the size and series of a Variable
Spring suppofi is a factor known as Variability. This is a cal-
Hot Load = 307 lbs. or 1366 N
or 139 Kg
culation of the percentage change in the supporling force of
Movement = V2" tJp or 13 mm or 13 mm
Variability = 20Vo Maximum 207a max. 207o max.
a variable spring between the Hot (Operating Condition) and
the Cold (Installed Condition). The formula is shown below.
SOLUTION:
For practical purposes this percentage relates to the amount
of load the spring transfers back into the piping system prior 1. Calculate Spring Rate.
to operation. The lower the Variability the lower the effect x 307 lbs. = 122.8 lbs. per inch, or
0.20
on the system while in the Cold position. Since the Hot Load
0.50 inches
is the actual Operating Load of the piping, loading due to
Variability is not a factor. 0.20 x '1366 N = 21 N/mm, or
The Spring Rate is the amount of load required to deflect a 13mm
spring coil over a given distance and is expressed in pounds
per inch (Newtons per millimeter). 0.20 x 139 Kg = 2:4 Kg/mm
13mm
The Movement is the amount the piping system changes due
to thermal growth when moving from the Cold to Hot position.
2. Find the Spring Size column on the SIZE AND SERIES
SELECTION CHART where the Hot Load is 307lbs.,
Variability = Movement x Spring Rate or 1366 N or 139 Kg.
Hot Load
(A Size 5, Series 920 fits the criteria).
% Variability = Variability x 100
3. Calculate the Cold Load.
The Cold Load is calculated by adding (for UP movement)
63 lbs. per inch x 0.50 inches = 32 lbs., or
or subtracting (for DOWN movement) the product of Spring
Rate times the Movement to or from the Hot Load. 11 Npermmx13mm = 143 N, or
Ifan allowable Variability is not specified, good practice 1.12Kgpermmx13mm = 15Kg
would be to :use 257o as specified by MSS-SP-5S.
Since the Movement is UP, add the above load change to
TO SELECT THE PROPER SIZE AND SERIES the Hot Load.

1. Find the Hot Load in one of Spring Size columns on the

307 lbs. + 32 lbs. = 339 lbs. Cold Load, or

2. Calculate the maximum allowable Spring Rate from the 139 Kg + 15 Kg = 154 Kg Cold Load
formula;
4. Now check to see if the Hot Load and Cold Load fit in
Spring Rate = Variability x

Movement the Working Range of a Size 5 Series 920. If so, you
have selected the proper unit.
3. Stay in the column and choose the Travel Series with a

Spring Rate equal to or less than the value calculated. your application, please call us.
4. Calculate the Cold Load and check that both the Hot
Load and Cold Load fall within the Working Range of the
Travel Series selected.
5. If your requirements are not met, move to an adjacent
Spring Size column and recalculate again using the above
procedure.
If the Movement or loading requirements cannot be satis-
fied, select a Travel Series with a greater Working Range
and recalculate.
If any combination of Load, Movement and/or Variability
cannot achieve the desired results the use of a Constant
Support should be considered.

VARIABLE SPRING SUPPORTS
VARIABLE SPRING ROD TAKE OUT CALCULATION
Type A Type B Type C

Type G

For Spring Types A, B, C, and G, the Rod Takeout can be calculated by adding the spring deflection ofthe load
indicator at the cold load setting (found on pages 5-7) to the "E" dimension and then subtracting 3"
to compensate for one half of the turnbuckle gap used for adjustment.

Example: A Figure 9208 Size f4, with an lnstalled Load of 4000 lbs. Has a Rod Take out of (1-9"+1.5"-3") = 17.5"

Type D

This spring type does not require any adjustment to its' "E" dimension.

USEFUL WEIGHT FORMULAS

PIPE PLATE AND BAR
Weight (1b/f0 = 10.68 x T x (D - T) x F Weight (lb) = 0.2833 x T x W x L x F

Weight 0b/f0 = 0.3405 x G x (D - 2T)'] Weight (lb/ft) = 2.6'7D2

LEGEND MATERIAL WEIGHT FACTORS

D = Outside Diameter (inches) Carbon Steel & Cr-Mo ..................1.00
F = Material Weight Factor Aluminum ...................... :...............0.35
G = Specific Gravity of Pipe Contents .............
Brass ..........1.12
Normally 1.0 for water, 0 for air and steam. lron
Cast .................0.91
L = Length (inches) Copper ....................1.14
T = Pipe Wall, Plate, or Bar Thickness (inches) Ferritic stainless steel .....................0.95
W= Width (inches) Austenitic stainless steel ................ 1.02
Wrought iron ..................................0.98

CALCULATING OF PIPINIG INSULATION WEIGHT

The weight per foot of insulation is calculated by using the weight
factor "X" from the table below and multiplying by the insulation
density (lbs/cu-ft).

EXAMPLE: A 16" pipe wrth 3%" of insulation is lbund to have a

weight factor of 1.49 (from table below). With an insulation density of
11 lb/cu-ft, the calculation for insulation weight is 1.49 x 17 = 16.39

General Formula: For pipe sizes not shown in the table above (special
O.D. pipe, etc.), use the lbllowing formula to determine the insulation weight:
Insulation Weight: (lb/f0 = 0.0218 x I x T x (T + D)
Where: I= Insulation density (lb/cu-ft)
T= Insulation thickress 1inches.1
D= Outside diameter of pipe (inches)
