This Indian Standard( Fint Revision) wasadoptedby the Bureauof Indian Standards,after the draft
finalized by the Lubricants and Related Producs Sectional C-ommitteehad been approved by the
Petroleum Coal and Related ProductsDivision Council.

In this presentrevision,varlousgradeshavebeenmodifiedin acccjrdancewith the internationallyaccepted


ISO VG gradesand rationallzedas VC 460,VG 680,VG 1000and VG 1500gradesrespectively.It was
alsonotedthat more meaningfulresultsare obtainedfor flashpoinu and carbonresiduewhenClevelqnd
Open Crtp ( COC ) methodand ConradsonC,arbonResiduemethodrespeitivelyare employed.Accord-
ingly,thesemethodshavebeenintroducedmodi$ing the requirements.Requirementfor viscosityindex
( VI ) hasalsobeenmodlfiedin line with the internationallyavailablecylinderoil products.With the
publicationof this revisedvenion of IS 1589,the standardIS zffi z 1964Oil, cylinder,Grade 4 would,
therefore,becomeredundant.

This standardis intendedchielly to cover the technicalprovisionsrelating to the material,anclit does


not includeall the necessary
provisionsof a contract.

For rhe purposeof decidingwhethera particularrequirementof this standardis compliedwith the final
value,observedor calculated,expressing the resultof a testor analysis,shallbe roundedoffin accordance
with IS 2 : 19ffi'Rules for rounding off numericalvalues( revised)'. The number of significantplaces
retainedin the roundedoff valueshouldbe the sameas that of the specifiedvalue in this standard.
