# About

Year after year, lakhs of candidates

appear in the CBSE examination.
Examinations are followed up by the
results inducing anxiety and stress in
minds students. CBSE replaced the
trend of awarding marks to CGPA
grading system in 2011.

Well this intrigued our analytical

minds to calculate CGPA and
Percentage of marks on the basis of
CGPA. Albeit, CGPA is marked on
your certificates, students might feel
the need to recheck and ensure there
cumulative grades.

One of the most common and reliable

method is:

1. For average CGPA:

Sum of all the Grade Points (GP) of

each subject must be divided by 5.

For instance, if an examinee scores

the GP for- Subject 1 is 8, Subject 2
is 9, Subject 3 is 9, Subject 4 is 9.5
and Subject 5 is 7

Then the sum of GPs will be:

8+9+9+9.5+7= 42.5

Dividing 42.5 by 5, we get 8.5 which

is the aggregate CGPA.

2. For overall indicative percentage

of marks:

We need to multiply CGPA with 9.5.

(9.5*CGPA)

3. To calculate subject wise

indicative percentage of marks

We need to multiply 9.5 with GP of

the subject. (9.5x GP of the subject)

The overall grades for consecutive

standards 9th and 10th are
displayed in the separate boxes on
the Grade Sheet cum Certificate of
Performance. These grades are
awarded on the bases of overall
performance assessments in the
academic year.

Here is a glaring paradox and an

interesting inference of this marking
scheme adapted by CBSE.
Individuals with consistent good
performance in all subjects are
subjected to score a higher CGPA.
While students who score
exceptionally high in some subjects
and less in others get comparatively
lower CGPA. This pays off to be jack
of all trades and master of none,
being unfair to the students who
excel at specific subjects.

# Frequently Asked Questions

What does this application do?

Please describe briefly.

This calculator generates a Grade

Chart and displays Overall Result by
accepting a list of subjects along with
their grades. It is applicable for
students studying in schools
affiliated to Central Board of
Secondary Education (CBSE).

Why is my main subject incorrectly

marked as "Additional"?

We recommend students to input the

five main subjects only excluding the
additional 6th subject. If more than 5
subjects are entered, our calculator
would tag the least scoring subject
as an Additional subject.

What is the full form of CGPA?

CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade

How to convert CGPA to

Percentage?

Just multiply your CGPA with 9.5 and

result will be your percentage. For
example, to convert 9.2 CGPA to
percentage, we multiply it with 9.5
and the resulting number 90.3 is the
percentage.

Why the CGPA from this calculator

doesn't match with the one from
CBSE?

This may happen only if the number

subjects you selected in the
calculator are more than 5 AND at
the same time we incorrectly tagged
the main subject as additional based
on the score.

How to calculate percentage from

CGPA?

Multiply the CGPA with 9.5 or use the

above calculator to get the overall
indicative percentage.

Why I cannot select the grade for

7th Subject?

The board allows five main subjects

and a 6th one as an additional one for
selection in Class 10. Students
usually opt no more than 6 subjects
so we doubt you would hit this limit.

What exactly is CGPA?

CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade

Points Average. It is the average of
Grade Points obtained in 5 subjects
excluding additional 6th subject as
per Scheme of Studies. CBSE no
longer ranks class 10 students on the
basis of marks but on the basis of
CGPA. It is calculated in a scale of 10,
where highest is 10 and lowest is 4.
CBSE awards the students' grade
points on the basis of marks they
obtain in a subject.

How to calculate CGPA from

subject grade points?

1. Add Grade Points (GPs) for all the

five main subjects.

2. Now divide the number obtained

by 5

3. The resultant number is your

CGPA.

For example, if your grade points for

the 5 main subjects are: Subject 1: 8,
Subject 2: 9, Subject 3: 7, Subject 4:
9 and Subject 5: 9

Step 1: Add the grade points:

8+9+7+9+9 = 42

Step 2: Divide it by 5 42/5 = 8.5

So, your CGPA is 8.5.

Why multiply with 9.5 only?

The Board took the result of the last

five years and calculated the average
marks of all candidates who had
scored between 91 and 100. That
average turned out to be close to 95
marks. Since the equivalent Grade
Point for the 91-100 band (A1 grade)
of marks is 10, it then divided the
average result of 95 by 10. The result
was 9.5.

How to convert Percentage to

CGPA?

Just divide your Percentage by 9.5

and result will be your CGPA. For
example, to convert 68 percent to
CGPA, we divide it by 9.5 and the
resulting number 7.2 is the CGPA. To
calculate CGPA, add the grade-
points of five subjects excluding the
additional subject and divide the sum
total by 5. The result will be your
CGPA. For example, if you got 10 in
Maths, 9 in English, 10 in Science, 7
in Social Studies and 8 in Hindi, then
your CGPA will be (10+9+10+7+8)/5
= 8.8

To find the percentage of a particular

subject, you'll have to multiply grade
point of that subject with 9.5. If you
don't want to do this manually, just
use the CGPA calculator.
