Top 20% 73 70.6% 46.3

You 71 80.2% 53.5

The table compares your attempts and accuracy with the top 10% who took the test and also with the top
20% of all the test takers. You can compare your attempt levels with those of the toppers. One needs to
find one's optimum level of attempts, and we need not needlessly increase the number of attempts when
our accuracy level is low. This will happen when we are not spending enough time with each of the
question and are rushing through it.

Question Selection( in %)

Easy Medium Difficult

Top 10% 62.5 48.7 40.3

Your Attempts 62.5 46.3 27.2

The above table shows how you have selected your questions. And how does it compare with the top 10%
who took the same test. Ideally, you should be attempting all the easy questions, then go to the questions
of medium level of difficulty and finally, attempt the difficult questions. Hence you should have picked
maximum questions from easy and medium levels and lesser numbers from questions of higher level of
difficulty. This will improve your speed as well as accuracy.

Test: #4

This is an analysis of where do you figure among the thousands of test takers. Given below are the
sections and scores at different percentile levels. For example, let's say that in section 1, the 97.5
percentile score was 19. That means that in section 1, only the top 2.5% of the test takers got more than
19. Same for other sections and the total score also. This percentile level score is given for all the tests
that you have taken till now.

The highlighted cell indicates where you stand in top 50%.

If your score is not highlighted, it means that you do not feature in the top 50% of test takers in that
particular section.

This analysis gives you a true reflection of what your strengths and weaknesses are. As you know, CAT
and any other competitive exam is all about comparative grading. Hence you should benchmark your
scores against others to know where you stand and what are your chances of clearing a particular exam.

The catch about doing well in CAT and getting all the interview calls from IIMs is that you not only
maximize your total score but also do equally well in all the sections. It is here that your time
management and your decision making skills are tested.

Remember that it is essential for you to clear all the cutoffs to get any call from an IIM. So doing very well
in one of the sections and hence maximizing your scores may not be a good strategy for CAT. You have to
do well in all the sections.

The table above indicates your score in all the sections of the test and their cutoffs levels. Under the
column accuracy, if your scores appear in red, it means that your accuracy in that section is below 75%.
In every section you need to strive for an accuracy above 75%.

Your attempt in various levels of Difficulty

Right question selection is very important to maximize the scores. The question selection broadly can
depend on many criteria. In this section we will try to look at question selection based on level of difficulty.

Let us take a look at your attempt pattern with regard to the level of difficulty of questions.

Total Attempts Accuracy(%) Score

Easy 30 73 20.0

Medium 32 84 25.7

Difficult 9 88 7.7

Ideally, you should be attempting all the easy questions first, then go to the questions of medium level of
difficulty and finally try the difficult ones. This will improve your speed as well as accuracy. All easy
questions Should be your round 1 questions, medium ones your round 2 and the difficult ones attempted
last. This also ensures that you don't miss out any easy questions.

Mock CAT 4 (2004)- An Analysis by CL

After written 3 Mock CAT's, All of you must have developed a proper study plan for the
D Day and worked on Test taking strategies, so you are ready to take this and must have
set very high standards for yourself. With the same 3 sections pattern you must have a
proper time allocation strategy.

Again, although it is important to perform the customary rituals like praying, meditating
and reading instructions, you would have learnt a lot from your previous test
performances. To begin with, no amount of these rituals can substitute readiness for any
Mock CAT!

This test comes without many surprises. There are the usual 3 sections with a total of 150
questions spread equally across the 3 sections. You need to decide how much time you
want to spend to give to each one of these sections. The recommended allotment, of
course, is 40 (or 35) minutes to each preferably. Once you open the booklet, you notice
that Section-I has 50 QA questions. There are not too many "big" questions. There seems
to be a strong focus on Algebra along with some geometry/ mensuration and numbers.
This goes well with the current trend in CAT exams. Section-II has RC (25 questions in 5
passages!!!) and EU (rest of 25 questions). Section-III has almost equal stress on DI and
logic-based questions. Just goes on to show that logic rules in CAT!

A possible matrix for the attempt pattern is given below:

Sect # Topic Time Total Qs # of attempts for IIM's Possible Score for IIM's
1 QA 40 min 50 24 16
EU 25
2 & 40 min 30 22 - 24
RC 25
3 DI 40 min 50 26 20 - 22
Total 120 min 150 80 58 -62

Section-I Analysis (Quantitative Ability)

Let us do a minute-by-minute account of this section. The purpose, of course, is to

simulate the student experience. I suggest you to compare this attempt pattern with the
"Topper's" scoring pattern and see if it matches. The basic idea of a Smart Test Taker is
exemplified using this technique. To make it even more realistic, I have included another
kind of action here. There are quite often some questions that you start working on and
then find that they becoming traps for you. I have mentioned these as Skip/ Attempt for
the same reason. You will notice that I have kept appropriate time for these, as you may
have started on them and then had to give up. The important point here is to be
disciplined and not spend more than 2 minutes on any such question. I will not be
including these questions in my total round 1 attempt questions, simply because they
might as well have been traps for you!

questions

This attempt-sheet assumes that there are a lot of questions that might trouble you. The
trick is to self-discipline yourself and quit a question even if you have spent 2 minutes on
it. This is not an ego issue and all questions are created equal in value! In the 35-40 odd
minutes, you would have solved about 20-25 questions. This is in no way a small
achievement. If you had done this, you should have stopped at that and devoted more
time to other sections.

Section-II Analysis (EU & RC)

The first 5 questions were vocabulary questions. One had to match the definition of the
given word with its correct usage given in the opposite column. The words given in the
questions 51-55 were very common and the questions could have been answered by
matching maximum two words with their correct usage one need not have read all the
four statements to answer these five questions.

The next 5 questions were of Idioms and basically tested you on your knowledge of the
various idioms. The idioms were not very difficult except may question no 56, and
58,other questions were fairly simple and should have been attempted in the first go
itself.

Questions 61 to 65 were of Para-jumbles of six and five sentence type. These were all
simple questions and could be solved by coming up with just one mandatory pair per
question. One could have scored well in these questions.
.
Questions 66-70 were asked you to locate the odd one out from the given group of words.
This sections tested you on your vocabulary and also your ability to reason and develop
relationships among a given set of words Defiantly a must attempt since the words were
fairly simple and it was easy to develop relationships between those words. Two short
paragraphs with blanks were given..

Questions 71 to 100 were of reading comprehension. Of these not more than 12 questions
were inferential. One could have easily attempted 18 of the 30 questions. The first
passage was about movies and criminal justice process. Most of the questions were
factual. Questions 71 to 76 could by easily attempted. The second passage was about
lenders and debtors. The passage had 5 questions of which 4 were factual.

The third passage was about the play 'the man who had all the luck' it carried 4 questions.
All these questions were inferential in nature. Passage 4 was about the social and political
manipulations of the governments and it had 5 questions out of which questions
86,87,89,90 could easily be attempted.

Passage 5 is about propagandists and only two questions were factual and four of them
were inferential in nature. The last passage was on fashion. It had 4 questions. Three out
of the four questions were inferential and even though the passage looked easy in the first
glance, the questions made it slightly tricky.

Hope you got the picture of how to attempt this test paper! Try and cross check this pattern with
what you actually did. Of course, there may be small variations based on your comfort level with
various topics.

Keep your cool and ensure that you test out all the strategies of ordering different sections. This
would help you in finalizing your own strategy in time for the real thing!

I would like to start this analysis by talking about CUT offs. Kindly remember the cut offs given by
me are prescribed cut offs to get 6 IIM calls. So that one can feel safe after getting this score. The
reason my cut offs do not reflect in the data of CL is primarily because this is just the 4th Mock
cat. Things will change after 12 Mock cats. Also there are so many students who are yet to touch
geometry, Probability and permutations/combinations.

Also I expect to see a significant improvement in your DI speed.

Cut offs Good Score Excellent score

Section II (English):- 23-24 31 38
Section III (DI):- 22 28 33
Overall Cut off: 69+ 72 79-80

Please read the footnote given about what to do in the last 2 minutes.

Quantitative Ability
One of the major reasons why students found quant tough was because they were ready to put
pen on paper for every question rather than think and act accordingly. I would illustrate my point
with examples. I assume you are bad at quant and I am trying to tell you how you could have still
scored 13-14

The easiest portion was from Q 29 to 34.

Page 1 - only one question should be attempted. Question 1. After your algebra class such
questions should be sound routine as they are now common in almost all kind of books.

All questions from 2 to 7 could have been easily avoided (i.e. you shouldn't have put pen on
paper for such questions. You should have read them and left immediately. One can avoid
attempting case-lets at the onset, as the idea is to get sitters correct)

Question 8 is a kind of question, which is not a sitter but a definite doable (those questions
which are not easy but not very tough as well) as I feel that by 21st November your
experience with numbers would increase.

There must be so many students who read Q. 9 and tried to attempt it and when they couldn't do
so they left the whole case. One should take a case as a whole and read all Questions. Question
9 and 11 could have been easily combined as one can easily realize answer of 9 +answer of
11=1/4. Hence Q 9 and 11 are sitters.

One should read Q. 12 and leave it. No point in reading a question as big as 13.

Question 14 is easy, as even if the method prescribed at the answer key did not strike you. Still
you know that V=2x11x13x71x89 + 1. Hence you need to find remainder of V256/16.

Question15 (sitter): The simplest GP is 1,1,1,1 However V1<V2<V3<V4. Hence the next GP is
1,2,4,8. Hence 1+2=3 and 8+4=12. One should think only for such methods. Conventional
methods can solve questions but not with speed.

Q16 is easy and so is Q.19, 20.

If you try to find out in your batch, all of you would find at least 2-3 people who got Q21 correct.
It's definitely doable with options.

Question 22 has been a favorite of cat and mock cats. Please solve it with zeal at home.

All those who have still wasted more than 30 seconds on Q 23-25 are not taking this paper with
any strategic plans.
However Q 26 is a sitter. All those who leave questions just because they have coloured balls or
cards will suffer like this. There were no permutations involved.

I agree many would have ticked Q 26 b. Actually I did the same.

It is difficult to teach Q 28 without you being with me. Please discuss the question with your
faculties.
Question 29 was definitely a sitter. It applies to 30,31,32,33,34

One could have easily left Q.35, 36, 37

I would like to request all of you to do "base system" thoroughly as it has come in cat quite a no.
of times. The topic is easy and very easy
Q 38 gives u 3 digits a, b, c to define every quantity. Decimal system gives you 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,0
i.e. 10 digits. Hence base 3
Please practice Q 42 at home seriously.

Q 44, 47 are easy.

Also next time you do questions like 48,49,50 learn to keep patience and convert these doable to
sitters.

That makes it more than 20 sitters in the section. One has to find at least 50 % of them.

English
Easy, easy and very easy I don't know what to offer any advise for this section. I have met a
student scoring 39.25. The Para-jumbles were so simple. So were the RC passages. There was
no portion, which involved any kind of ambiguity.

There is only 1 word for this section. EASY. Infect I wont be surprised if I find the sectional cut off
for this 25+. However the same will not happen because other sections were tough.

I wouldn't like to discuss anything further here in this section. Please make sure that all those
students who are not comfortable with English should write at least 2 sectional tests daily.

Data Interpretation
The cut off 22 for this section would sound very harsh in this paper to most. Analyze it and you
might change your plans.
Q 101-104 involved no brains. One should learn to arrange options of q 104 in ascending order
and then solve.
At this stage I would not attempt the second graph as it looks complicated.
I would go to Q 108 and get all the next 4 correct with ease.
Next I will attempt 112. Its not a bad idea if you attempted just 2 questions of the same and went
on. That is 2 questions 2 minutes.

Don't ever attempt questions like 116-119. These questions involve solving 2 questions for
every 1 mark.

It applies to 120,121,122. However, if you have read the set then please read all questions
of the set and get 123 correct.

Next in the quest of easy graphs I will reach 137,138,139 and get at least 2 correct.
Next 144,145. They are very easy.
Next 105-107
Now I would start analytical reasoning with Q 140-143. All are sitters.
Q 124-127 are next on my agenda. Again all are sitters.
Please don't attempt quant questions like 128 after glancing through as there is so much more to
be exploited in the section.
Data sufficiency was again easy and very easy. All are sitters again.

Last 2 minutes
No matter whatever section you attempt last there is no justification to waste last 2 minutes. One
needs to feel that there is still a lot of time and keep his cool. 2 marks can be the difference
between IIM A and SP Jain. You need to have plans in all sections to fall back upon in last minute
when you have nothing to do. One idea is critical reasoning. In DI Q 139 is one of those. Hence
don't waste this precious time. In case you are doing it then attempt some other section in the end
where you won't.
