Chapter 1
Problem and its Setting
1.1 Introduction

In this study, an innovated Tesla turbine is to maximize energy production

through an improved disk design that would then be useful for the residents of

Alubijid, Misamis Oriental –for their households or workplaces. The study involves

fabricating a prototype Tesla turbine that mechanically converts the kinetic energy of

water to electrical energy.

(Insert reference about the need of renewable energy and hydroenergy).

Alubijid is a municipality in Misamis Oriental that is blessed by abundant water

flowing resources and at the same time is in need of electrical power sources for
their everyday use. The Tesla turbine is, at best, an efficient and an environment

friendly machine that could help solve the municipality’s energy scarcity.

In a research conducted by 5 year Mechanical Engineering students of

th

Xavier University, in the school year 2017-2018, it was proven through a

comparative study that adding “fish fins” on the surface of the disk of a Tesla Turbine

improves its overall power rate and efficiency. From that presupposition, this study

focuses on determining the optimum power performance of a Tesla Turbine through

comparatively testing different number of “fish fins” or “fish scales” on its disks for the

purpose of efficient electric power generation for the community of Alubijid.

1.4 General Objective

The main objective of the study is to determine the optimum power performance

of a Tesla turbine by incorporating “fish scales” on its disk, for the social application of

hydroelectric generation at Alubijid, Misamis Oriental.

1.5 Specific Objectives

 To fabricate a Tesla turbine and disks incorporated with “fish scales” according

to its parameters.

 To comparatively measure the power performance and efficiency of three

different disks, having different number of “fish scale” arrays: 11, 13, and 17.

 To develop a hydroelectric system. (Stream-Turbine-Alternator--)

 To evaluate the economic viability of the Tesla turbine with “fish scales” as a

new type of turbine disk.

Statement of the Hypotheses

The Tesla turbine with disks having the most number of “fish scales” --17--
works at optimum power performance and efficiently, and is therefore the
recommended design parameter for hydroelectric generation application.
