Lesson Title:
SS 5.3 Multiplication: Exploring the relationship between multiplication and division (tape
diagram
Provide a rationale for why you chose to teach this lesson at this time. Where is the lesson
located within the unit (in relation to previously studied topics and ideas to be studied in the
future)?

I chose to teach this lesson because the students just finished learning how to use the tape
diagram to compare addition and multiplication. The students also finished learning how to use
the tape diagram to solve word problems that involve addition and multiplication. This lesson
serves as the next part in using tape diagrams, but will now find the relationship between
multiplication and division.

Grade Level: Standard(s):

4th Grade 4.OA.A.1 – Represent division using tape
Subject: diagrams
Math 4.OA.A.2 – Solve division word problems
4.OA.A.3 – Solve addition word problems
4.NBT.B.5 – Use strategies to divide multi-digit
numbers
What are the primary learning goals?
 Students will be able to use the tape diagram to solve a word problem involving division
 Students will be able to use the tape diagram to solve a word problem involving
multiplication
Differentiation Strategies: (Content, Process, Product)
To differentiate my lesson, I will use multi-sensory forms during my instruction. I will have
students move around in the classroom through brain breaks. I will also have the students use
their whiteboards to solve the word problems for my visual learners. I will have a small group
after my lesson with students that need it most.
