Reflection on Collaborative Unit on Digital Citizenship

For the collaborative unit on digital citizenship, I collaborated with Dana Ryal, a third-
grade teacher at Fairmount Elementary School. Dana graciously met with me for two days
during lunch. I am a special educator teacher. I have worked in many inclusion classrooms.
Therefore, I find that collaborating with others is a strength for me. During our lunch, Mrs. Ryal
and I worked on a pre-test to give to our students. We wanted to make sure our students needed
instruction on the topic we chose. After we gave the pre-test, we created a lesson plan for the unit
on Planbook.com. This was a helpful resource that she introduced to me to. While meeting with
her, we wrote down what we wanted in the lesson and broke the content up into modules. It took
some time for us to find the most appropriate resources. Between the two of us, we were able to
find just what we were looking for. We decided to use Google Sites. Mrs. Ryal was unfamiliar
with Google Sites. So, I was able to show her how to navigate it. Overall, the collaboration
process went smoothly, and we were both pleased with the final project.
I believe the students benefitted from our collaboration. Her students were eager to
complete the modules. Mrs. Ryal and I both observed that they navigated the site well. They
were engaged while completing it. If I had to make revisions, I would have had them create the
BrainPop! Movie in groups or found a different activity. The BrainPop! Movie was time
consuming. Some students finished a lot faster than others. This led to some down time for some
students, while others were still completing the activities. Overall, the students did well
completing the online modules. I plan to make these revisions to this lesson before others
complete the online modules.
