Coolant mess
u Thanks to checking the coolant quite regularly,
the owner of this 2001 Audi A3 TDI had recently
noticed a distinct change in the look of the fluid.
It slowly dawned upon him that this was due to
the ingress of oil. We confirmed that it was oil, but
we were also able to reassure him that it wasn’t
necessarily the failure of the head gasket.
One of the other common causes is failure of
the oil cooler. This is quite easily changed and
did turn out to be the problem with this little A3.
After confirming this and replacing the cooler, the
worst part of the job was cleaning out the cooling
system. This needs to be done thoroughly, as any
oil left in the system will deteriorate the coolant
hoses and rubber O-rings in the system.

Engine choice
Nissan offered the K12 Micra with a diesel engine, but for the new model
they decided that frugal petrol motors would do the job. Just two were on
offer, both of which were new HR12 1.2-litre three-cylinder units featuring
twin chain-driven camshafts and variable valve timing. The entry-level
model managed 79bhp and although performance was modest – reaching
62mph took a lethargic 13.7 seconds – it claimed a combined 56.5mpg
and 115g/km CO2 emissions. Opt for the automatic transmission (CVT)
and those figures became 52.3mpg and 125g/m, but it was an otherwise
impressive showing and the alternative engine offering was even better.
The supercharged 1.2 DIG-S (Direct Injection Gasoline – Supercharged)
not only featured additional tech, including stop-start and an intelligent
alternator, but operated on the more efficient Miller Cycle at low revs,
before switching to the conventional Otto Cycle at higher engine speeds.
The result was combined economy of 68.9mpg in manual form and CO2
emissions of just 95g/km (115g/km for the CVT). With 98bhp to play
with, performance was markedly improved, with the 0-62mph time
cut to 11.3 seconds with a 112mph top speed.

Reinventing
the wheel
While technology has brought
notable improvements to motoring,
tyres are still a problem for many
drivers. But Michelin may have the
answer, as Chris Randall finds out.
The pneumatic tyre has been with us
since the 1880s, with Scottish veterinary
surgeon John Boyd Dunlop credited
with its invention. While some argue that
another Scot, Robert Thomson, is the
true inventor, having patented something
similar in 1845, there’s no doubt that a
move from solid tyres to ones filled with
air transformed motoring.
The technology involved may have
changed out of all recognition compared
to those early efforts, thanks to
advances in materials and construction,
as well as the advent of the run-flat tyre,
but the humble ‘boot’ is still seen as a
troublesome expense by many drivers.
But what if the need for regular
maintenance and the risk of annoying
and costly punctures could be
eliminated? That’s what Michelin are
proposing with its Unique Puncture-
proof Tyre System (Uptis) airless tyre.
The tyre was unveiled at the Movin’ On
summit held in Montreal in June 2019,
with Michelin claiming it could be in
mainstream production in just five years.
Although derived from Michelin’s

1 Keep it simple
Fuses are normally easily accessible and
easy to test. Owners’ manuals will usually
give an index indicating fuse location and
rating, while fusebox covers will often give a
visual or numerical layout of fuses and relays.
Fuses can be inspected visually by removing
and checking if the fusible link is broken,
or else you can use a multimeter to test for
continuity across the contacts. Some types of
fuse can be tested in place by checking for equal potential (voltage) at the exposed metal contacts on the back of the fuse.
2 Visual checks
If the component you are testing is accessible, visually inspect the wiring to it for burning,
chafing or signs of corrosion. Check the block connector for water ingress and confirm
the condition of the contacts, which should be free of dirt and provide a good connection
between the male and female contacts. Visually inspect any ground points you can access.
3 Electrical tests
In order to function, an electrical component requires a live or positive feed and a ground or
negative connection. The ideal way to check these is by taking a voltage drop measurement;
this is a measure of the voltage that gets ’dropped’ across the component.
With the circuit connected and switched on, the voltage measured across the back of the pins
should be roughly within a volt of battery voltage (this is true for most, but not all, circuits
– some circuits work with a different voltage, such as 5-volt sensors/switches). If the voltage
drop measured is equal to battery voltage then test the component itself (see Step 4). If the
voltage measurement is less than battery voltage, check the live and ground connections
individually. These tests should be carried out with the circuit switched on.
Testing the live Place the red lead of the multimeter on the live connection of the component
and put the black lead on the battery negative. This should give a reading equal or close to
battery voltage. If not, refer to a wiring diagram and trace the live side back to its source.
Testing the ground Place the red lead of the multimeter on battery positive and the black
lead on the component ground. This should give a reading close to battery voltage. If not, the
component does not have a good ground supply. Trace the ground side of the circuit – this is
usually through the vehicle chassis – detaching any ground connections and cleaning them thoroughly. When refitting, ensure
a good connection is made.
4 Testing components
If a component has a live and ground
side but is still not operating, it’s quite likely
that it is faulty. However, if there’s an easy
way to test it before replacing it then it’s
always worth doing this.
A lot of basic components can be
tested with a multimeter for continuity/
resistance. Including bulbs, switches,
glow plugs, fuel pumps, motors, relays,
sensors, heated windows, solenoids,
horns, etc. These components must have continuity through them in order to work. Sometimes establishing the manufacturer
specification for resistance can be difficult. If there is more than one of the component you are testing fitted to the vehicle –
a glow plug or window motor, for example – do a comparison check.
Take care not to damage electronic components and never check SRS components with a multimeter.
Life can be
complicated.

Humble Opinion
Mike Humble finds that dealers are trying to get around Euro Block Exemption.

I have said this many times before
