Results and Conclusions

Sambalpuri sarees and other garment products have huge demand in Odisha, Chattisgarh and
Bengal. Establishing a textile mill and mass producing its products is going to be beneficial.

1
Introduction

Sambalpur is famous for its arts. It mainly includes the traditional garment business. A Sambalpuri
saree is a traditional handwoven sari wherein the warp and the weft are tie-dyed before weaving.
The textiles with traditional motifs are mainly found in the Bargarh, Sonepur, Sambalpur, Balangir
district, Boudh district of Odisha. Most common product is sarees. Sambalpuri sarees are known for
their incorporation of traditional motifs like Sankha, Chakra, Phula, all of which have deep symbolism
with the native Odia color: red, black and white represent true Odia culture along with Lord Kaalia
face color, but the highest point of these sarees is the traditional craftmanship of the ‘Bhandakhala’,
the tie-dye art reflected in their intricate weaves, also known as Sambalpuri Ikkat. There is
abundance of traditional cultural designs and products. However, cotton required for the production
is not produced in Odisha. Thus, neither acquiring land, labour, capital is a problem nor is the lack of
demand. The main problems are acquiring cotton as raw material and Ikkat may require usage of
traditional craftmanship as method of production. In the traditional technique, the threads are first
tie-dyed and later woven into a fabric, with the entire process taking many weeks.

Statement of the Problem

The problem of this study was to start a textile mill and to start export business of the garments
produced. determine the marketplace and the problems associated with making of Ikkat, which is,
modernisation of traditional techniques. Specifically, the study sought to determine the 4Ps of the
marketing concept which are: Place, Product, Price and Promotion of starting a textile mill and
export service in Sambalpur.

The report states the 4Ps: Product, Price, Place and Promotion of the textiles of Sambalpur. The
report is based on secondary data collected from internet. No first-hand experience of such textiles
was taken into consideration in this study. Mass producing large industries have been emphasized in
this study. The study also deals with small cottage industries that use traditional techniques to make
homemade products. Moreover, the study deals with the price and promotion aspect of the
customized handlooms produced by the weavers.

Limitations of the Study

The limitations of the study are as follows:

1. Secondary Data: Primary data has nit been used in this study. Data both of weavers and
customers are taken from the internet and no direct or formal contact has been done with
either parties.

2
2. No Product Experience: The products and their design are completely unknown to us and no
first hand experience has been experienced. The study is based on all the pictures and
information available online.
3. Time: The time limit provided for conducting such a study was too small. First hand
experience of the study is very difficult in such limited time frame.

Findings and Analysis

Sambalpuri sarees and other garment products have huge demand in Odisha, Chattisgarh and
Bengal. Besides, it also has demand across India. Establishing a textile mill and mass producing its
products is going to be beneficial. But the real profit would be in promoting and employing several
experienced weavers and making customized products for the customers. Promoting different types
of products for different occasions and advertising heavily will create a huge demand and extend the
already existing customer base. Thus, providing boutique solutions employing local weavers along
with fabrics made in textile mills is going to be a good business. Moreover, concessions and benefits
from government can also be enjoyed for promoting local traditions. The industry, if established
during these days can also align with the “Make In India” initiative of the government. Thus, can
receive and utilize the reduction of GST. Goodwill generated among local people for employing them
and having a customized boutique solution will help gain edge over competitors.
