In a remarkable turn of events, Apple bought NeXT, and I returned to Apple,
and the technology we developed at NeXT is at the heart of Apple’s current
renaissance. And Laurene and I have a wonderful family together. I’m pretty
sure none of this would have happened if I hadn’t been fired from Apple. It
was awful tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it.
Sometimes life is gonna hit you in the head with a brick. Don’t lose faith. I’m
convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did.
You’ve got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for
your lovers. Your work is gonna fill a large part of your life, and the only way
to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way
to do great work is to love what you do.
If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking, and don’t settle. As with all matters
of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And like any great relationship, it
just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking. Don’t settle.
My third story is about death. When I was 17, I read a quote that went
something like: “If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you’ll most
certainly be right”. It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past
33 years, I’ve looked into the mirror every morning and asked myself: “If
today were the last day of my life would I wanna do what I am about to do
today?”. And whenever the answer has been “No” for too many days in a row
I know I need to change something.
Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever
encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost
everything, all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or
failure, these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is
truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I
know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are
already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.

Em uma memorável série de eventos, a Apple comprou a NeXT, e eu retornei
para a Apple, e a tecnologia que nós desenvolvemos na NeXT está no coração
(no cerne) do atual renascimento da Apple. E Laurene e eu temos uma
maravilhosa família juntos. Eu tenho muita certeza de que nada disso teria
acontecido se eu não tivesse sido demitido da Apple. Foi terrível experimentar
o remédio, mas eu acho que o paciente precisava (disso).
Às vezes a vida vai acertar você na cabeça com um tijolo. Não perca a fé. Eu
estou convencido de que a única coisa que me manteve seguindo em foi que
eu amava o que eu fiz. Você tem que encontrar o que você ama. E isso é tão
verdadeiro para seu trabalho quanto (isso) é para seus amantes/parceiros. Seu
trabalho vai preencher uma grande parte de sua vida, e a única maneira de
estar verdadeiramente satisfeito é fazer aquilo que você acredita ser um
grande trabalho. E a única maneira de fazer um grande trabalho é amar o que
você faz.
Se você não encontrou isso ainda. continue procurando, e não relaxe. Assim
como todas as questões do coração, você saberá quando encontrar (isso). E
como qualquer bom/ótimo relacionamento, ele simplesmente fica cada vez
melhor conforme os anos se passam. Então continue procurando. Não relaxe.
Minha terceira história é sobre morte. Quando eu tinha 17 anos, eu li uma
citação que era mais ou menos assim: “Se você viver cada dia como se fosse o
seu último, algum dia você estará muito certamente/com certeza certo.” Isso
causou uma impressão em mim, e desde então, pelos últimos 33 anos, eu olho
no espelho toda manhã e pergunto a mim mesmo: “Se hoje fosse o último dia
da minha vida eu iria querer fazer o que eu estou prestes a fazer hoje”? E
sempre que a resposta tem sido “Não” por muitos dias em sequência eu sei
que eu precise mudar alguma coisa.
Lembrar que eu vou estar morto em breve é a ferramenta mais importante
que eu já encontrei para me ajudar a fazer as grandes escolhas na vida. Porque

quase tudo, todas as expectativas externas, todo orgulho, todo medo de

embaraçamento ou falha, essas coisas simplesmente desaparecem frente à
morte, deixando somente o que é verdadeiramente importante. Lembrar que
você vai morrer é a melhor maneira que eu conheço para evitar a armadilha
de pensar que você tem algo a perder. Você já está pelado. Não há
razões/motivos para não seguir o seu coração.
