Ucayali is a department in Peru.

Located in the Amazon rainforest, its name is derived


from the Ucayali River. The regional capital is the city of Pucallpa.
Geography
Boundaries
The Ucayali Region is bordered by the Brazil on the east; Madre de Dios and Cusco on
the south; Junín, Pasco and Huánuco on the west; and Loreto on the north.
Demographics
Population
As of 2002, the Instituto Nacional de Estadística e Informática estimated the region's
population to be 468,922.
Languages
Spanish is spoken as a first language by 87.6% of the population, while 4.1%
speak Asháninka, 1.5% speak Quechua and 0.1% speak Aymara.
Other indigenous languages, including Shipibo, are spoken by 6.6% of the population
and 0.0% speak foreign languages.
Culture

The Amazonian culture is famous for the power of its plants. Scientists from all
countries have visited The Amazon in the search for alternatives and chemical
components assets of those plants at least once.

The festival of San Juan is emblematic in the region. At the night of June 23,
The villagers go to a river bath and they bath on the river to have the blesses of San
Juan. From this date are the famous "juanes", one of the typical dishes of The jungle.

In the gastronomy of the region are typical paiche, palm hearts, known as "chonta",
aguaje drinks, liquor seven roots, among many others.
