5.1 Obtaining Licenses

License application involves the binding between a PO on the ESDP system and the ESN of a
specified device to obtain a license file. License application methods vary depending on
scenarios. This section describes how to apply for licenses in new site projects or site capacity
expansion projects, and how to apply for temporary licenses.
5.1.1 Obtaining COMM Licenses for New Site Projects

Context
COMM licenses are applicable to commercial deployment with contracts.
Two methods are available for obtaining COMM licenses in new site deployment scenarios:
entitlement activation and password activation. To activate a license using an entitlement,
enter search criteria (such as the contract No., order No., and entitlement ID) and based on the
search result, activate the entitlement. To activate a license using a password, obtain the
activation password from the license certificate and activate the license using the password
(supported only by enterprise network products).

Procedure
Step 1 Obtain the entitlement ID or activation password from the license certificate.
NOTE
l This step is mandatory in password activation. Skip this step if a search criterion other than the
entitlement ID is used in entitlement activation.
l The license certificate is sent to customers by email or delivered with the product in A4 papers or CD-
ROMs.
Step 2 Log in to the device and run the display esn command in any view to obtain the ESN of the
device.
NOTE
To obtain the ESN of the S1720GW, S1720GWR, S1720X-16XWR, or S1720X-32XWR that supports only
web management before license activation, perform the following operations: Log in to the web system, click
Monitoring on the toolbar, and check the value of Serial number in the System Description section.
For a stack, you can run the display esn command to obtain the ESNs of all member switches.
Step 3 Log in to the ESDP system at http://app.huawei.com/isdp.
Step 4 Activate the license.
Method 1: Entitlement activation.
1. Choose License Activation > Entitlement Activation in the navigation tree on the left.
The entitlement activation page is displayed.
2. Select one or more entitlements.
a. Set the search criteria and click Search & Refresh. For example, you can search for
a specific entitlement based on the entitlement ID, or all entitlements in a contract
based on the contract No. or all entitlements in an order based on the order No. The
following uses a Huawei contract No. as an example.
b. Select entitlements in the search result. You can select one entitlement for single
activation or multiple entitlements for batch activation.
NOTE
If the stack license is involved, one entitlement ID may correspond to multiple activation IDs. In
this case, select all the activation IDs corresponding to the entitlement ID.
c. Click Next. The page for binding ESNs is displayed.

3. Bind the ESNs of devices to the entitlements.
Enter an ESN or click to select the ESN of an added NE. Click Next.
4. Confirm activation.
Check whether activation information is correct. If so, click Activate License. If not,
click Back.

5. Click Download to download the license file.
Method 2: Password activation.

1. Choose License Activation > Password Activation in the navigation tree on the left.
Enter the entitlement ID or activation password in Password, and select I have read the
above carefully and then Next.

2. Enter the ESN of a device.

Exception Handling
If you fail to apply for a license, click Help on the ESDP according to the failure information
displayed by the system to enter Online Smart Assistant for consultancy and failure
rectification.

5.1.2 Obtaining COMM Licenses for Capacity Expansion Projects

Prerequisites
l The entitlement ID (LAC) and capacity expansion contract ID have been obtained.
l The device ESNs have been obtained.
l The product name and ESN in the contract are the same as those on the live network.
l The license for capacity expansion is in Ready state.
Context
At a site with a capacity expansion contract, you can directly select the license entitlement for
activation. The ESDP system then automatically combines all license items on the device to
generate an overall license file. Note that the version of the device must be no earlier than that
of onsite products.
Procedure
Step 1 Obtain the entitlement ID or activation password from the license certificate.
NOTE
l This step is mandatory in password activation. Skip this step if a search criterion other than the
entitlement ID is used in entitlement activation.
l The license certificate is sent to customers by email or delivered with the product in A4 papers or CD-
ROMs.
Step 2 Log in to the device and run the display esn command in any view to obtain the ESN of the
device.
NOTE
To obtain the ESN of the S1720GW, S1720GWR, S1720X-16XWR, or S1720X-32XWR that supports only
web management before license activation, perform the following operations: Log in to the web system, click
Monitoring on the toolbar, and check the value of Serial number in the System Description section.
For a stack, you can run the display esn command to obtain the ESNs of all member switches.

Step 4 Activate the license.
Method 1: Entitlement activation.

1. Choose License Activation > Entitlement Activation in the navigation tree on the left.
The entitlement activation page is displayed.
2. Select one or more entitlements.
a. Set the search criteria and click Search & Refresh. For example, you can search for
a specific entitlement based on the entitlement ID, or all entitlements in a contract
based on the contract No. or all entitlements in an order based on the order No. The
following uses a Huawei contract No. as an example.
b. Select entitlements in the search result. You can select one entitlement for single
activation or multiple entitlements for batch activation.
NOTE
If the stack license is involved, one entitlement ID may correspond to multiple activation IDs. In
this case, select all the activation IDs corresponding to the entitlement ID.
c. Click Next. The page for binding ESNs is displayed.
3. Bind the ESNs of devices to the entitlements.
Check whether activation information is correct. If so, click Activate License. If not,
click Back.

Method 2: Password activation.

1. Choose License Activation > Password Activation in the navigation tree on the left.
Enter the entitlement ID or activation password in Password, and select I have read the
above carefully and then Next.

2. Enter the ESN of a device.

5.1.3 Obtaining Temporary Licenses

Temporary licenses provide a trial of new features and apply to POC tests during the market
expansion, product demonstration, and R&D test before product release.
Temporary licenses are provided according to the following rules:
l Only one user is authorized to use a temporary license, and the user name is
unchangeable.
l The validity period of a temporary license is fixed.
To obtain a temporary license, contact technical support personnel.
5.2 Installing Licenses
Prerequisites
l You have obtained and uploaded the license file to the device.
NOTE
This section describes how to install a license on the CLI. For details about how to install a license using the
web system, see the Web-based Configuration Guide of the corresponding version.
To install a license on the S1720GW, S1720GWR, S1720X-16XWR, or S1720X-32XWR that supports only
web management before license activation, you must log in to the web system, and then perform the
following operations: Choose Maintenance > System Maintenance > License. Load a license file from your
local computer in the license management page. Click Activate to restart the switch and activate the license
file. The device will restart after you confirm license activation, so it is recommended that you select Save
the configuration and Reboot.
Procedure
Step 1 Run the license active file-name command to activate the license.
If the following information is displayed, the license is activated successfully.
Info: The license is being activated. Please wait for a moment.
Info: Succeeded in activating the license file on the master board.

Follow-up Procedure
If the license file cannot be activated, handle the problem according to 6.1 License Fails to
Be Activated.
5.3 Checking Licenses

Checking the License Status
Run the display license state command to check the license status on the fixed switch.
For details about the license status, see Table 5-1.

Run the display license command to check detailed information about the activated license
file in the system. S5720 is used as an example.

Checking the Usage of the Resource Items Defined in the License File
Run the display license resource usage command to check the usage of the resource items
defined in the license file. S5720HI is used as an example.

5.4 Uninstalling Licenses
Context
You can uninstall unnecessary license files to release storage space on a device.
Procedure
Step 1 Run the license revoke command in the user view. The status of the license to be unloaded
becomes Trial.
Step 2 Upload and activate a new license file. For details, see 5.2 Installing Licenses.
Step 3 Run the delete filename command in the user view to delete the license file to be uninstalled.
NOTE
If the license file is not activated, skip Step 1 and Step 2. You only need to run the delete filename
command to delete the file.

5.5 License Migration Between Devices
Prerequisites
The license file of the device has been revoked and the license revocation code has been
obtained.
NOTE
You can run the display license revoke-ticket command in any view to obtain the license revocation
code.
Context
License migration between devices is required in the following scenarios:
l License replacement of a spare part: Typically, a customer buys one more device, the
device has a license, but the license is original. After a device operates on the network

for a period of time, the license of the device may need to be updated. Therefore, if the
device on the network becomes faulty, you cannot directly replace the device with the
spare part. Instead, you need to perform license replacement of the spare part on the
ESDP to make the spare part obtain the latest license.
For channel partners and final users, contact technical support personnel in this scenario.
l ESN change with a revocation code: An incorrect ESN is bound to the license file, and
no record about binding a correct ESN to the license exists on the ESDP system, apply
for the license file corresponding to the new device ESN again.
If a license binding record exists on the ESDP system, you need to refer to 5.6 Rolling
Back a License to roll back the license file to which an incorrect ESN is bound.
l ESN change without a revocation code: The ESN of the license file is incorrect and no
revocation code can be obtained for the original license file because of a misoperation.
You need to apply for the license file corresponding to the correct ESN again.
For channel partners and final users, contact technical support personnel in this scenario.
NOTE
The ESN change operation can be performed only on permanent licenses, not on temporary or fixed-
term licenses.
If you want to apply for a license that contains the ESNs of all member switches for a stack, you can
change the ESN on the ESDP system. In step 4, enter multiple ESNs and separate them by comma (,).
7.2 License Installation: How Do I Install a License File for a Stack System? lists the scenarios in
which you need to apply for a license that contains multiple ESNs for a stack.
Channel partners and final users do not have the permission for license replacement of a spare part and
ESN change without a revocation code. If needed, contact technical support personnel. This section
describes only procedures for changing the ESN with a revocation code.
Procedure
Step 2 Choose License Commissioning and Maintenance > ESN Change from the left navigation
tree to enter the ESN Change page.
Step 3 Select With Revocation Code for ESN Change type, enter the revocation code of the license
file in which the ESN needs to be changed, and click Verify.
Step 4 After verifying the revocation code, the system automatically displays device information of
the original ESN. Enter the new ESN to start the ESN change task. Click Save.

Step 5 Choose My Task > Operation Record to check ESN change tasks on the displayed page.
Click the link under Download to download the .zip package to the local device.

5.6 Rolling Back a License
Context
If an incorrect ESN is bound during the license application stage and records about binding a
correct ESN to the license exist in the ESDP system, you need to change the status of the
license to which an incorrect ESN is bound from active to inactive and use the correct ESN
and the authorization code or activation password to reactivate the licence in the ESDP
system.
NOTE
Channel partners and final users do not have the permission for license rollback without a revocation
code. If needed, contact technical support personnel. This section describes only procedures for rolling
back a license with a revocation code.
You can run the display license revoke-ticket command in any view to obtain the license revocation
code.
Procedure
l Roll back a license permanently.
a. Log in to the ESDP system at http://app.huawei.com/isdp.
b. Choose License Commissioning and Maintenance > Commercial License
Rollback > Permanent License Rollback from the left navigation tree to enter the
Permanent License Rollback page.
c. On the Permanent License Rollback page, select Manual input for Revocation
Code Input, enter the revocation code of the device, and click Verify

l Roll back a fixed-term license.

a. Log in to the ESDP system at http://app.huawei.com/isdp.
b. Choose License Commissioning and Maintenance > Commercial License
Rollback > Fix-term License Rollback to enter the Fix-term License Rollback
page.
c. On the Fix-term License Rollback page, enter the revocation code generated for
the commercial fixed-term LSN to be rolled back in the original license file, and
click Verify.
NOTE
The function of rolling back a fixed-term license is available on January 21, 2017. Only
fixed-term licenses that are activated after January 21, 2017 can be rolled back, and
commercial fixed-term licenses can be rolled back only in their validity periods.

Follow-up Procedure
For details about how to re-activate a license using a correct ESN and the entitlement ID or
activation password, see 5.1.1 Obtaining COMM Licenses for New Site Projects.

5.7 Splitting a License

Context
If a customer wants to split a resource license in the license order into multiple licenses for
multiple devices, you can split the resource license on the ESDP system.
Procedure
Step 1 Check whether the license is in Ready state.
1. Log in to the ESDP system at http://app.huawei.com/isdp.
2. Choose Order Management > Entitlement Management to open the Entitlement
Management page. Select the license and click Split Entitlement.
3. Enter the entitlement ID of the license file to be split, Huawei contract number, and other
necessary information, and click Search.
4. In the license list, check the delivery status of the license to be split.
– If the license is in Activated state, roll back the license to the Ready state by
referring to 5.6 Rolling Back a License. Then, go to Step 2.
– If the license is in Ready state, go to Step 2.
– If the license is in another state, contact technical support personnel.
Step 2 Select the license and click Split Entitlement on the Entitlement Management page.

Step 3 Split the license in batches using either of the following methods:
l Split the license with each new license of the same capacity: Enter the number of new
licenses in the Split Count text box, enter the capacity of each new license in the Split
Value text box, and click Next. The Confirm Split window is displayed.
NOTE
The values of Split Count and Split Value comply with the following formula:
Total = Split Count x Split Value + Remaining After Split
l Split the license with new licenses of different capacities: Click Add to add one or more
configuration templates. In each configuration template, enter the number of new
licenses in the Split Count text box, enter the capacity of each new license in the Split
Value text box, and click Next. The Confirm Split window is displayed.
NOTE
The values of Split Count and Split Value comply with the following formula:
Total = Split Count 1 x Split Value 1 + … + Split Count N x Split Value N + Remaining After Split

Step 4 Click Confirm Split, and click OK in the Confirm window.
Step 5 In the Split Success dialog box, click Activation License to enter the Entitlement
Activation page and bind device ESNs. Alternatively, you can click Goback and Look for
the entitlement of split to view the entitlements of the new licenses.

5.8 Merging Licenses
Context
If a device needs to be deactivated for maintenance or other reasons, you can merge the
license of the device with that of another device. This makes full use of existing license
resources to maintain service capabilities.
NOTE
Channel partners and end users have no permission to merge licenses. If necessary, contact technical support
personnel to merge licenses.
Procedure
Step 1 Obtain the revocation codes of the deactivated and target devices.
1. Run the license revoke command in the user view to make the license enter the trial state
and generate a license revocation code.
2. After the license is in trial state, run the display license revoke-ticket command to
obtain the revocation code of the license.
Step 2 Provide the revocation codes to technical support personnel for license merging.

5.9 Upgrading or Downgrading the License Version
Prerequisites
Target license file or ESN of the target device has been known.
Context
For better software compatibility, the device does not verify the license file. After the device
software is upgraded or downgraded, the license file used before the software upgrade or
downgrade can be retained. If you want to keep the product version in the license file the

same as the device software version after the device software is upgraded or downgraded, you
can perform the following operations to facilitate subsequent capacity expansion and services.
NOTE
Only permanent licenses can be upgraded or downgraded. Temporary and fixed-term licenses cannot be
upgraded or downgraded.
Procedure
Step 2 Choose License Commissioning and Maintenance > Version Change in the navigation tree
to access the Version Change page.
Step 3 Read through the content in Notice, select I have read and agree to the above, and click
Next.
Step 4 Click Upload to upload the license file to be upgraded or downgraded.

NOTE
You can search for and download the target license file on the ESDP system through the ESN of the device.
The navigation path is Equipment(Node) Management. If the local license file is different from that on the
ESDP system, the license file on the ESDP system applies.
Step 5 Select the current product name or version and the target product name or version.
Select the right product and version to ensure that the product and version are the same as
those of the target device. Otherwise, the license file cannot be loaded, and services will be
interrupted.

NOTE
In an upgrade operation, the target version is later than the current version; in a downgrade operation, the
target version is earlier than the current version.
Step 6 Check the information and click Activate License.
Step 7 You can download the new license file after the version is successfully changed.
NOTE
You can search for and download the new license file on the Equipment(Node) Management page based on
the device ESN.

5.10 Restoring an Invalidated License
Prerequisites
The license has been invalidated on the device and the license code has been obtained.
NOTE
To obtain the codes of invalidated licenses, run the display license revoke-ticket command in any view on
the device.
Context
If a license file fails to be rolled back, a license file fails to be migrated between devices, or a
license file fails to be combined with other license files, you need to restore a license file that
is available on the device. However, because the license revoke command has been run on the
device, there is no license file available on the device. In this case, perform the following
operations to generate a new license file.
The capacity, functionality, product, version, and ESN information in the new license file is
the same as that in the invalidated license file, and only the LSN is different. Users are
unaware of the difference, and services are not adversely affected.
NOTE
Only invalidated permanent licenses can be restored. Invalidated temporary and fixed-term licenses cannot be
restored.
Procedure

Step 2 Choose License Commissioning and Maintenance > Revoked License Recovery in the
navigation tree to access the Revoked License Recovery page.
Step 3 Enter the code of the invalidated license and submit it for verification.
Step 4 After the verification succeeds, the device name, product, version, ESN, and LSN information
are displayed. If the information is correct, click Submit.
Step 5 Download the license file as prompted.
