Introduction

Enzyme serve a wide range of important functions especially in the body like aiding
digestion and metabolism. There is a lot of type of an enzymes and every kind of enzymes
have their own functions. Catalase is a very common enzyme that is present in almost all
organisms that are exposed to oxygen. Catalase works to speed up the decomposition of
hydrogen peroxide into oxygen and water. An organisms that live in the presence of
oxygen, catalase is the one that accumulate and protects cellular organelles and tissues
from damage by peroxide because it is continuously produced by numerous metabolic
reactions.
Data and Result
The catalase enzyme in test tube #1 with 5 mL extract and 5 mL 6% H202 absorbed
the gas in the lighted matchstick. The gas stayed on the top layer above the solution. This
reaction is caused by catalase, an enzyme within the potato. The bubbling reaction was the
metabolic process of decomposition. When catalase is added to hydrogen peroxide, there is
an initial rapid evolution of oxygen. The oxygen has steady rate which slowly decreases.
This decrease in the rate of oxygen is due to enzyme destruction. The rapid evolution and
the steady rate of the oxygen can leads to peroxide decomposition.
Conclusion
When the hydrogen peroxide and the catalase enzyme combined it will break down
into oxygen and water. These is the reason why the effect of the chemical reaction turns to
oxygen gas bubbles then wants to escape and create foam. When the enzyme reduce its
energy the chemical reaction starts. This could only means that the rate of reaction will
increase. The amount of the enzyme will remain the same and feels like there’s nothing
change. In addition, Catalase acts as the catalyzing enzyme in the decomposition of
hydrogen peroxide.
