First Amendment Statement

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the

free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the
people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” This
is what the First Amendment states. I believe this amendment was put in place so that people
have the fundamental right to freedom of speech and can speak up and speak out when need be.
This being the first, I feel as though it is also one of the most important as it puts emphasis on the
fact that like-minded people are allowed to express themselves freely and in public.

As humans, I feel we should use our freedom of speech to the fullest. Not only are should
we use it to the fullest, but also put it to good use every day. When issues arise and changes
need to be made, we as a people can use our voices and speak up. If we continue to stay silent on
issues that need to be addressed, change will never come. As a collective, in the world today,
there are too many platforms and ways in which we can actively use our voices that certain
issues should not go unnoticed. This amendment typically relates to a political standpoint but can
be looked at on a much wider spectrum.

Being a journalism and mass communication student, the first amendment is crucial to
me. This department consists of creators who write, produce videos, work in radio, as well as
news. Having the freedom of speech allows us to be able to have quality content and a variety of
topics to speak on and about. I for one, tend to be a very opinionated person, so if I have a
thought or idea, I feel would be relatable to others, I like that I can speak on it and not have
consequence for it. Freedom of speech and the press allows people like myself to speak or write
my ideas, and freedom of assembly allows us to show a common interest publicly. These are
some reasons I feel the first amendment is important to me.

The first amendment will be useful to me in my career because I would like to consider
myself a writer . Being that , we have to be able to speak on things such as politics and even
some controversial topics. With this amendment we are allowed to speak freely on these things
and that is more than important when it comes to journalisms.
