Charlie and the Chocolate
Factory
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is about a boy
named Charlie who lives with his parents and four
grandparents. His family is very poor and is constantly
struggling to survive. One day, a local chocolate factory
decides to reopen and allow 5 children to come and
visit. The hunt begins for the 5 tickets to enter the
factory and lucky boy Charlie, finds the last golden
ticket. Throughout the story all 5 children face
different obstacles, and eventually Charlie is the last
won standing. Willy Wonka, the factory owner, then
gifts Charlie with the entire chocolate factory to live in
and run for the rest of time.

In the Classroom
The book we chose to use in the classroom is Charlie
and the Chocolate Factory, ideally we would use
this book with young readers (K-2). We chose this
book because it shows different creative sides of
each individual in the story. With this we could
show children how to always be yourself. Another
aspect to be used in teaching is to make do with
what you have and always be hopeful. Charlie was a
poor boy and grew up with almost nothing but he
still always had a smile on his face. Lastly, this is a
story of maturity. Charlie was more mature and
able to handle himself in situations within the
factory, which led to him getting the award at the
end.
Roald Dahl in
the Classroom

How we would implement Mr.

Dahl's classic stories into an
everyday classroom
Being that most of these stories are chapter
books, we would assign the books as free
reading, with room for reflection in any
way that the student sees fit. Most of Dahl's
stories are fictional and emphasize things
that children popularly fantasize about. It
would be important to discuss the moral
messages behind each story and to ensure
that the students are following along with
the fairytale storyline, and the message
embedded within.
