Time to Give Thanks
I’d like to thank our Tom Bowman for his leadership in keeping the club and the subject of UFO’s in the
forefront of the local communities’ minds with his monthly appearances on the local news, “Noon Edition”.

I’d like to thank the LAURA board members for their support, especially Amber for bringing in refreshments,
and then hauling the remainders back home.

I’d like to thank Linda for helping me with the presentation at the Lima Astronomical Society on Nov 1st. There
were plenty of questions from them in the subject and of LAURA’s meeting time. Please go out of your way to
make them or any visitor feel welcomed.

I’d like to thank Tom Wertman from Mufon of Ohio for his excellent program in October. (He had to drive
three hours from Cleveland and three hours back home for a two hour presentation.)

I’d also like to thank Michael Ritchie from the Lima Astronomical Society for tonight’s presentation. I’m sure it
will be interesting!

September Gallipollis, Ohio UFO Sighting

On the front page of the National UFO Reporting Center website, there is an Ohio sighting that is interesting.
Gallipolis, Ohio, Saturday, September 21st, 2019, @ 11:13 p.m. (Eastern)—A husband (former law
enforcement) and wife (scientist), while sitting outside their recreational vehicle at a public campsite, witness
a very bright light approach their campsite from the south in an erratic manner, appearing to slow or stop on
several occasions as it drew near. It got within 50 yards, they estimate, of their campsite, at which time, out
of a sense of alarm, the husband reached for his .45 caliber sidearm, but he felt unable to use his arm, or lift
the firearm. The object, estimated by the witnesses to have been approximately 20 feet in diameter, hovered
nearby for approximately 8 seconds, and then suddenly accelerated toward the west, and disappeared very
quickly to the west.

The Changing Face of (UFO) Media

For the better or worse, I can see there has been a huge shift in the formats of media consumption. The
traditional media format of printed books is still being produced of course, but sales are in a decline.
According to The Bureau of Labor Statistics, 80% of US families did not buy or read a book last year. Many well
researched books, particularly in the UFO field, bring so many details and fact sources to be consumed at a
speed that is right for the individual to comprehend the information that is shared.

Many times, I’ve seen UFO documentaries that give a dizzying array of claims so fast that the viewer can
comprehend only a portion, almost always with no sources of information for their claims and some of these
have been shown at our LAURA meetings. I don’t know about you, I’ve often wanted to stop and research
each claim one-by-one, -this slow process of learning is the only way that I could even start to believe some of
the claims.

There is such an overwhelming amount of websites, blogs, podcasts, and videos and these media forms are
growing exponentially. In 2019, 90% (312 million) of the U.S. market use the internet. For podcasts, 32% of the
U.S. population (90 million) has listened to a podcast in the last month. This can be attributed to long
commutes, and very broad use of cell phones, and of course, the internet almost everywhere. –Bob P-
