Dr. Milner began his career at Vanderbilt, where he
became the first Black faculty member at Peabody College to earn promotion and tenure from assistant to associate professor. He went on to teach at the University of Pittsburgh before returning to Vanderbilt. He has been repeatedly honored by the American Educational Research Association, serves as an editor on several major educational journals, and has written and edited several books, including Rac(e)ing to Class: Confronting Poverty and Race in Schools and Classrooms
Dr. Milner is a leading scholar of urban education and
teacher education, specializing in equity, diversity, and the social contexts of schools. His work encourages teachers to consider the needs of students of color, students living in poverty, and English language learner students when assigning work and engaging in classroom management.
