Introduction
Where is it found: Innermost layer of
female placenta during c-section. Single
layer amnion cell fixed to collagen-rich
mesenchyme attached to the chorion
What is it?: Avascular stromal matrix with a
thick basement membrane which promotes
epithelial growth
Characteristics: Anti-inflammatory &
bacterial & viral & angiogenic, and has
immunological characteristics Contos

The discovery
Who
Dr. JW Davis: introduced as skin graft
Sabella: Used AM as permanent
coverage for wounds.
Douglas: First to use AM as temporary
biological dressing for wounds (skin
substitution)
When: Early 20th century
Why: Promote patient healthcare
How: Through extensive research Contos

Location & Step by
Step Procedure
Location: Skin burns and wounds, chronic
ulcers, and more
Product: AmnioBand Viable Membrane
Procedure: Take out of frozen storage->
Peel outer layer to submerge in saline for
thawing-> Transfer retainer into D5LR->
Separate retainer to pull allograft w/ forceps
Preservation: C-section performed-> Tested
and mixed w/ various solutions for

Different functions in
Plastic Surgery
General Function: Regenerate tissue
Orthopedic: Safe and non-tumorigenic,
producing an abundance of growth factors that
have shown promise as tissue scaffolds and as
aids in the regeneration of human bone and
soft tissues.
dermatology:Anti-inflammatory and anti
angiogenic properties to facilitate wound
healing.
Study A: Promote healing and reduced scar
formation, prevent tissue of Inflammation and
regenerate tissue
Study B: Longer time to heal wound injury Contos

Positive effects of
Amniotic Membrane
Faster results than normal standard care
● 80% vs 20% healing in 12 weeks
● 83% of patients achieved complete
wound healing
● 70% patient’s wound reduced after
first week
● Recovery time: 21 days vs double
(can vary)

Does Age Matter?
Age Matter: No-several months to 65
years
Usual problem: Superficial burns & open
wounds
Trial: 10 kids-24% covered in wounds &
recovery time differed from control
group. 31 days vs. 56 days
