CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Backround and Rationale Science Process Skills are the competencies that empower an
individual to gather reason about data to make better sense of his world, say (Gega,1994) as
science enquiry skills, these are the courses of action research use in scientific explorations, the
mental mode of acquiring science concepts, and the didactic processes in lecture rooms
(Millar,1987) that is they can be applied to most situation whilst the integrated science inquiry
skills apply more specifically to scientific investigation (Neuman,1993), as cited by Segumpan
n.d.

During the 1960's and 70's science curriculum innovation and reform were characterized by by
attempt to incorporate more inquiry oriented and investigative activities into science classes
(Dillashow and Okey,1980), science process skills are defined as a set of broadly transferable
abilities appropriate the behavior of scientists (Padilla,1990) the traditional methods of assing
science process skills competence such as through practical work only has a number of practical
contrants, particularly in the context of teaching and learning in the large under resourced
classes (Onwu,1999) other, researchers have raised concern regarding the exclusive use of
unfamiliar materials are conceptual model in african educational system (Mazibuko,2004). In
the new south africa the government realizations of its learners in the third international
Mathematics and science study "TIMST" results (HSRC,2005), including governments white
papers were published (National Department Educational-NDE,1996) which attempted to
address the deficiencies and shape the educational policies in the country (Howie,2001)
science process skills is Dependent on the knowledge of the simpler primacy (basic) process
(Mozube,1992), especially those in rural areas are characterized by large science classes
(Zaaiman,2003) science process skills are high order thinking skills which are usually used by
scientists when designing and conducting investigations (Rezba et. al,1995) as cited by Kazeni
(2005).

Statement of the Problem The aim of this study is to determine the Science Process
Skills Competence among Grade 10 students of Sirawai National High School. Specifically, the
researchers would like to find answer to the following questions.

1.What is the Grade 10 students Science Process Skills Competence?

2.Is there a significant relationship between gender and students Science Process Skills
Competence .

Significance of the Study The study will benefit the student, teacher, school head, and
future researchers.

Student The of a positive attitude in terms of integrated science process skills competence to
enhancing student. Independence creative thingking activity aiming to improve the science
process skills of grade 10 student.

Teacher Knowing the weakness and strenghts of their students in termsof integrated science
process skills competence, teacher can use the findings of our study to conduct an intervention
activity aiming to improve the science process skills of grade 10 students.

School Heads The findings of the study shall help the school head to formulate interrention
program to improve the integrated science process skills competence of grade 10 students of
Sirawai National High School and improve students academic performance in science in
preperation for more advanced science subject.

Future Researcher The study will contribute on the existing body of knowledge. Future
researcher will use the findings of our study as reference to make further research in the future
bearing on the assessment of student science process skills as a subject particularly in the rural
area of the province of Zamboanga del norte.

Scope and Limitation of the Study This study focus on determining the Basic
Science Process Skills Competence among grade 10 student of Sirawai National High School
using a standardized paper and pencil test.
This study is conducted on the first semister on the school year 2017-2018 to the grade 10
students of sirawai national high school.

This study is conducted by the student-researchers with supervision of a teacher-researcher.

CHAPTER 2
REVIEW OF LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Related Literature The scenario of the in 21st century saw rapid progress in science and
technology, knowledge is increasing rapidly as the effect of testing new ideas in the world either
by research institutions or others (Karsli et. al,2009) in addition acquisition of SPS also has a
great influence in developing, mental process such as higher order critical thinking and
decission making (Koray,2007) the context of science "inquiry" refers to scientific inquiry that
scientist (Schwab,1960) in the context of instruction, inquiry refers to "the teaching and learning
strategies that enable scientific concepts to be martered through investigation and practical
work" (NRC,2000) within this view is the concern for what (Brown et. al,1989) refer to as
authentic activity. According to (Kim,2007) inquiry-based teachung that engages students 8n
various hands on activities in the science laboratory is believed to enhance childrens SPS and
create positive attitude towards science, as cited by Hafizan n.d.

Science process skills institutions also promote positive attitude toward science among
students, thus, the avoidance of teaching the process skills can be dentrimental (Bilgin,2006)
many researcher stated that teacher who are deficient in the basic science process skills are less
equipped to use inquiry in their classrooms (Aka et. al,2010).

Science process skills are necessary tool to produced and used scientific information, to reform
scientific research and solve problem (Ergin,2008). (Colvill,2002) postulated that the activities
which consist of basic and integrated process skills are the key factor of scientific/science
literacy and the key dimension of scientific/science literacy. According to (Skamp,1998) basic
science process skills such as observing, using numbers and classifying are the foundation for
the acquisition if integrated science process skills, as cited by Zeidan and Jayosi (2014).

In the basic science process skills is not just useful in science, but in any situation that requires
critical thinking, science process skills include observing qualities, measuring, quantities,
sorting/classifying, inferring, predicting, experimenting, and communicating, (Vitti and
Torres,2006).
Related International Study The research study of Zeidan and Jayosi (2014), entitled
"Science process skills and attitudes toward science around palestianan secondary school
student". Aims to investigate the relationship between the palestinian secondary school
students knowledge level of science process skills and their attitude toward science, and the
effect of gender residence of these student on their knowledge level of science process skills
and on their attitude toward science. The data were analyze using SPSS, descriptive statistics
(means, standard deviation) were compute for responses to each item of the questionaire. T-
test was use to determine variation in the means by gender.

The result show that more palestinian secondary school student selected the correct options for
items related to the skills of obsevation. They found the skill of observation and pedicting easier
than the other skills. How ever there were no significant differences in attitudes toward science
due to the variable.

In addition from the research study of Bulent Aydogdu (2015), titled "the investigation of
science process skills of science teacher in terms of some variables". Aims to investigate basic
process skills integrated process skills and over all science process skills of science teacher in
terms of some variables, the method use in their study is SPSS 16.0 pocket program that has
been used for the analysis of data gained after the application.

The result of the study revealed that science teacher skills level was 48% in basic process skills
and 44% in integrated process skills of SPSTFT. Thus indicate the over all science process skills of
science teacher differed on the frequency of use of this skills in the classroom and on in service
training on these skills.

Related Local Study From the reseach study of Jose Paulo C. Dela Cruz (2015), entitled
"development of an experimental science module to improve middle second students
integrated science process skills". Aims to support student understanding of science by
providing them with opportunities to independently investigate through both research and
experimentation. This study utalized a research-validated paper and pencil test for assesing
integrated science process skills developed by Kazeni (2005) t-test for paired samples further
revealed that students scored significantly improve after going through the module.

The result analysis of the test scores showed improved in the different integrated science
process skills 8% in identifying variables, 11% in stating hypothesis 16% in operationally
definning variables, 8% in graping and interpreting data and 14% in designing experiments.

The research study of Imam O. et. al, (2014), entitled "Reading comprehension skills and
performance in Science process skills competence among high school students in the
philippines ". Aims to identify the high school students comprehensive skills and performance in
science.

The method use is the study is ramdom sample technique, to select the students respondents.

The study result showed that the over all student performance in reading comprehension and
science was indexed at low mastery level generally, four out of six reading skills inference made
up the over all reading skills that positively correlated with science performance of students
although the strenght of relationship was considered weak.

Conceptual Framework
