1. A regression equation for predicting first-year university averages from high school
leaving averages may be written in the form Y’ = .80X – 4.60. Obtain predicted
university averages corresponding to high school leaving averages of (a) 70, (b)
85, (c) 65.

2. The following are marks on a college entrance examination X and first-year

averages Y for a sample of 20 students.
X Y X Y X Y X Y
55 61 70 75 63 85 77 84
79 72 80 61 64 87 62 72
59 69 89 79 69 70 85 70
81 89 92 90 75 90 55 60
62 52 60 55 84 67 66 67

Compute (a) the correlation between entrance examination marks and first-year
averages, (b) the regression equation for predicting first-year averages from
examination marks, (c) the predicted first-year averages for the 20 students, (d)
the variance of the errors of estimation.

3. The following are data for a double-classification experiment involving two fixed
variables:
C1 C2 C3
29 31 23 62 17 32
R1 26 50 31 60 18 49
42 25 18 20 50 58
17 62 35 83 17 28
R2 27 62 50 42 14 58
50 29 62 19 49 62
Apply the analysis of variance to test the significance of row, column, and
interaction effects. Apply the steps in hypothesis testing, use alpha equal to 5%.
