Exercise No. 1
THE COMPOUND MICROSCOPE

V. QUESTIONS

1. List down the different parts of the microscope and give their functions.

 Eyepiece: The lens you look through that magnifies the specimen. The eyepiece usually 10X or 15X
power.
 Draw Tube: It is a tube that slides while inside the body tube. It holds the eyepiece.
 Body Tube: The hollow tube through which light passes. It connects the eyepiece to the objective
lenses.
 Course Adjustment Knob: Brings the specimen into general focus.
 Fine Adjustment Knob: Brings the specimen into sharp focus under low power and increases the
detail of the specimen.
 Revolving Nosepiece: A rotating turret that houses the objective lenses. The viewer spins the
nosepiece to select different objectives.
 Dust Shield: To keep the dust from settling on the objectives. It lies above the nosepiece.
 High Power Objective: Magnifies the specimen within 5X and 10X.
 Middle Power Objective: Magnifies the specimen within 20X and 50X.
 Low Power Objective: Magnifies the specimen 100X.
 Supporting Arm: It connects the body tube to the base of the microscope. This is the part you
should hold when transporting microscope.
 Stage: The platform where you place your slide.
 Stage Clips: Holds the slides in place.
 Condenser: Gathers and focuses light on the specimen.
 Iris Diaphragm: Controls the amount of light reaching the specimen.
 Inclination Joint: Where the arm connects to the base. Allows for tilting of the microscope for
convenience of the user.
 Mirror: It is used to reflect light from an external light source up through the bottom of the stage.
 Mirror Rack: It supports the mirror.
 Base: Provides stability and support for the microscope when it is upright.

1. Name 3 biologist who employed the microscope in their work. Describe their work/contribution.

2. Give atleast 5 ways of proper care and handling of the microscope.

 Hold the microscope with one hand around the arm of the device, and other hand under the
base. This is the most secure way to hold and walk with the microscope.
 Avoid touching the lenses of the microscope. The oil and dirt on your finger can scratch the glass
of the microscope.
 Clean smudges on the microscope glass with a piece
