Introduction

The Scream ( 1893 ) is one of the important painting created by Edvard Munch. The painter

was used a paint, paint stroke all seeming to flow together nicely. The modern art painting and

popular name given of a composition by Norwegian Expressionism artist Edvard Munch between

1893 and 1910. The objective of this painting are about formalistic aspect such as form,

description, analysis, elements, process, judgement and others.

Biography Edvard Much:

Edvard Munch was born in Norway in 1863. He spent travelling, studying, working and

exhibiting in France and Germany. He lives there until his death in 1944. He was active painter

from the 1880 until shortly before his death. During his lifetime of work, he made one of the most

significant and enduring contributions to the development of modernism in the twenty centuries.

He was handling of paint and the graphic media and one of the handful of artist who have

shaped our understanding of human experience and transformed the ways in which it might be

visually expressed. He said “ No longer shall I paint interious with men reading and women

knitting. I will paint living people who breath and feel suffer and love”.

Next, his image was existed dread, anxiety, loneliness and complex to emotions of human

sexuality have become icon of our era. Many of us know such as The Scream, Anxiety,

Expressionism

As a movement, the term expressionism usually denotes the late 19th century and early 20th

century of interpretive art. Which emerged in Germany as a reaction to the more passive style of

impressionism. The world expressionism was first used in 1850, mostly to describe the paintings

where artist’s strong emotion were clearly depicted. Next, expressionism first emerged in 1905,

when a group of four German students guided by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner founded the Die Brucke,

Kandisky and Franz Marc. These two groups became the foundation of the German Expressionism

movement. Since then, Expressionism became a widely recognized form of modern art.

Description :

This painting illustrated behind the painter Edvard munch. The painter focuses on an

anxious picture, fear and emotional disturbance. This painting is called the scream of nature as it

relates to nature.

This painting takes in a place where painters once lived and visited Norwegian. The

painting illustrates of painter and his friends who are walking and down the bridge at dusk. The

painter appreciates the beauty of nature. Suddenly, the painter saw the sky turn red as blood. He

looked at it and imagined that nature was screaming towards him. He was scared and worried when

he heard the screams of nature. He continued quit and leaned on the fence shivering in fear, then

heard the tremendous natural scream and infinite.

Next, the painter recalls the past story of what he sees. The painter saw the sky turn red as

blood and after that, he heard a loud cry from nature. Although Edvard munch did not describe the

situation as shown in his painting, The Scream. Therefore, the paintings can be interesting to know

the story behind The Scream paintings. the painting gives a clear picture of nature's screams and

anxious and fearful states. The painting shows the sky turning red, the rough sea and the one who

is screaming in fear.

Analysis :

Element of line

This painting uses a thick, smooth, straight lines and corrugated lines. For example, he used

a thick line on the bridge. He also used thin lines on the floor structure of the bridge. The viewed

that corrugated lines are used in orange clouds and blue sea.

Element of colors

From the colors corner, the painter uses the dark and bright colors. This is to illustrate

distances and proximity. The painter uses the orange color of the cloud likes as sunset. The sea is

a painter using dark blue because it wants to affect the painting. the colors give expressions to the

paintings. When viewed on an object or person in the picture, the painter uses a black color on his

shirt and shows face expression like screaming and frightening. It seems to want to tell that’s The

Scream of nature.

The principle of design painting, he uses are balance and emphasis. Balance in terms of the

position of the object in the drawing. Balance out the artwork by putting the people in the

background to balance out the person in the front. The emphasis, he used by making person dark

so he will stand out.

Form

This painting uses diagonal lines with curved shapes. The painting is composed of a man

was screaming on a bridge under a bright red sky and the say of the sea nearby. The main color of

the painting was red and blue. Edvard Munch blood red sky was inspired by the effects of

Interpretation:

This painting illustrated of a man walking in and looking at the town or town. He walked

on a bridge while looking at the sky at dusk. It sounds calm and relaxing in Norway. He saw the

sun with fun and sounds was relaxing. After that, the sound turns into panic and fear when it

sounds like nature is screaming loudly.

Moreover , he was frightened and anxious when looking at the scene as he said that the sky

turned red like blood. This painting also describes the painter's pain in time as he is sick and feels

that the world is screaming loudly towards him. This picture can be seen in the paintings, the

painter paints two people behind and one in front who is screaming

Processes

Thus, the five painting the Scream are made of tempera on cardboard, pastel on cardboard,

paint, pencil and lithograph. Next, to produce this painting, Edvard Munch use a different

techniques depends on the painting. He also uses a large brush stroke.

Judgement

This painting illustrates one expression through painter's emotions. This painting shows

expression through the use of lines, colors, shapes and others. In terms of line usage, painters use

horizontal, corrugated and thin lines to indicate abnormalities in the paintings.

Next, this painting is a curved shape that can be seen from the facial expression of someone

who is screaming in fear and anxiety. In terms of color, the painter uses dark and bright colors to

reveal an anxious and fearful expression as well as showing the sky to be red like the blood painted

by the painter.

Then, terms of instruments used in this painting, painters use canvas, cardboard, pastel of

cardboard, paint, pencil and lithograph.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this painting illustrated a lot of the lives of painters living in Norwegian

with their friends who are enjoying the beauty of nature over the Oslo bridge at dusk. The painter

paints emotionally as he thinks the world is screaming towards him. Furthermore, this painting

also teaches the public that this world needs to be well preserved. Painting the scream illustrates

of nature and life. This painting gives a clear picture because it can be seen in the darkness of the

painting and affects others.
