Abstract:

A diagram that is represented by a triangle is called a Ternary Phase Diagram. This is used in
plotting three-component system. This consists of three varying mixtures with only one phase
exists. The goal of the study is to determine the phase diagram for three-component system
consisting of ethyl acetate, acetic acid, and water. In this study, ethyl acetate in acetic acid was
prepared by preparing 10%, 25%, 40%, and 60% of the said mixture, titrated with water until its
cloudiness appeared. Tie line was determined by preparing 10% acetic acid, 45% ethyl acetate,
and 45% of water, allowed to equilibrate and two layers were separated. After separation, the
density of one of the layers was determined and titrated with NaOH. Two phase system was
demonstrated upon the appearance of cloudiness of the mixture. Thus, decreasing volume of
acetic acid could result to more water necessary for homogeneity breakage.

Conclusion and Recommendation:

The phase diagram of the three-component system was determined. From this, A bimodal curve
was formed and its tie line was also plotted that determined that there is equilibrium. Upon the
titration of the mixture of ethyl acetate and acetic acid with water, the cloudiness of the mixture
indicated that a two-component system was demonstrated. This is due to the decrease in
solubility of the mixture. Thus, a decrease in the volume of the acetic acid results to more water
necessary in order to break the homogeneity. Furthermore, it is recommended to cover the flasks
containing the mixtures with parafilm to avoid exposure and also because it s highly
concentrated. Also, it is necessary to take precautions in terms of the titration process since
errors in the data if too much of the titrant was poured.
