Analysis a Good Man Is Hard To Find by by Flannery O'Connor

1. Analyze : What does the passage mean, literally?

This story tells of a family consisting of father, mother, 3 children and a grandmother
who wants to go on vacation to a place, but at first the grandmother tried her best to incite
the child named Bailey to not go to the area because when he read the paper, there was
something that said that there was a criminal who was also in the area and the
grandmother asked them to go to another area but they ignored the grandmother. but
finally the grandmother was the first person to rush to the car to go with them, and she
carried and hid her cat. in the middle of the grandmother's journey, remembering that in
an area there is a house that has six pillars and has a secret room inside, he then tells the
story of two bailey children named John Wesley and June star and they are eager to go
there, initially Bailey doesn't want went there but finally he went there with the record
they may not enter the house because they do not know who the owner is. but before
arriving at home, they had an accident and fell into a not-so-deep ravine, the grandmother
felt embarrassed because she remembered that the house she meant turned out to be in
eastern Tennessee was not in Georgia, she hoped she was seriously injured so the bailey
didn't burst into anger to the grandmother, but this is where they must end, they meet
criminals who are nicknamed The Misfit, one by one they are killed, not least the
grandmother.

2. Interpret : What does it mean figuratively? How do you read it and what suggest that this
is a valid interpretation?

From this story, in my opinion this story describes a person who tried to cover up his
mistakes, but no matter how strong he covered his own mistakes, there must be times
when he had to pay or bear punishment for the mistakes he made, because what I read the
grandmother tried very hard cover up his mistake, was in part when the grandmother was
eager to visit a house in her memory, even though the house was not in the area that the
grandmother and family were visiting, and finally they all had an accident, the
grandmother was told that she hoped to get serious injury so that Bailey did not spill his
anger at the grandmother, here it was seen that the grandmother wanted to cover up
something and wanted to escape responsibility.
3. Question : What problems are suggested by the reading? What philosophical question(s)
does the reading inspire?

When I read this story, it came to pass that the grandmother actually knew what was
going to happen, it was shown that she was dressed very neatly compared to the others,
and she used something and indicated that "if an accident occurs, someone will know that
she is a woman", and I thought that the grandmother was actually covering up something,
a big problem, and it seemed that the grandmother understood very well the misfit, and
there was a part that showed when the grandmother was the mother of the misfit.

From here, the question arises in my mind, why does the misfit kill the grandmother, or is
it stated explicitly that the grandmother is her own mother?

And the problem of what happened in the past, so that the misfit can bear to kill the
family including the grandmother?

4. Synthesize : How does this reading compare or contrast in content/form with what you've
read before?

After I read this story and compared with other stories, this story was really interesting,
and gave a good moral message for all of us, the difference was background, plot, time
with other stories, but they had similarities in terms of the moral message to be conveyed
by the author, that we must be responsible for something, if we do something bad, we
must be prepared to bear the risk, because in this universe everything revolves, what we
plant is what we reap later.

5. Evaluate: The writing. What criteria do you use to establish this judgment? What defines
a first rate poem, play, story etc?

I am not someone who understands literature, I just want to rate this as a whole, in my
opinion this story is very interesting with quite a lot of roles in it, many unexpected
things arise from this story, and honestly this story makes me have to think hard, because
many events that for me are difficult to understand and make me even more wonder, from
the background, this story can make me able to imagine, and the moral message of this
story is very good and very deep.
