Eco-tourism Adventure Park: an intercultural-regenerative leisure for an urban

development thru modern-vernacular Architecture.

CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

1.1 Abstract

This research is to identify the problems of the current site and find solutions for these

problems, which will then be used for future redevelopment of the site. The first phase is where

the team will be conducting 2 surveys, 1 for the mass and the other for the residences. With this

information the team will know the opinion of the future users of the facility. Then the second

phase will be an ocular inspection of the site, in this phase we the designers will plan out the

flow and form of the redeveloped site. We aim to remove the problems that have been found

and apply the planned solution to make the site more livable and safe not only for the users but

also for the environment. This will improve the lifestyle of the residence near the site and make

the site attractive to the people around the city.

1.2 Background of the Study

Garbage is an admitted issue in the city of Cagayan De Oro, and our quest is to eliminate or

decrease the quantity of garbage while redeveloping the existing dumpsite into something more

ecofriendly. We propose a sensible solution to the issue that will improve the condition of the

land and health of the people.

And like any functional dumpsite, the landfill is an economical ground that is used daily.

However garbage is not the only thing growing in the site but also the people who are living near
it. And with this in mind the recurring trouble of garbage is now mixed with the health of the

people.

In the context of the dumpsite operations, the smell, traffic and supply of water in the site are

the main problems that should be given notice. Since it is a dumpsite, the smell is so heavy even

from a distance and this is very disastrous for the health of any individual that inhales the smell

on a daily basis. The existing road is cramped limiting only 2 lanes and it surely invites traffic,

and finally there is a limit of water supply in the area, some residences uses a deep well (atabay)

as their source of water. This will lead to a future development of the dumpsite that would

somehow cater the problems mentioned. Especially for the residences

A dumpsite was a really great facility to be invented, because it does not only control the

waste of the people but also secluding it to a specific location where it will be distant to the

people. But as time goes by,the population is growing rapidly and thus so is the waste. And

making the dumpsite less and less functional, since nowadays garbage piles up like mountains

and making to make worst people are now starting to live near the dumpsites. This does not only

make it a problem for the environment but also for the people who are living near it. With this

problem we came up with a solution that aims to not only lessen the waste, but also redeveloping

the site for the people to use and relax in. So that the health of the people living near that site will

not be affected any longer, while also making it place where people can interact and gather to

relax or hang out with their friends or families.

1.3 Statement of Purpose

The purpose of this study is to redevelop the existing dumpsite into anintercultural

recreational eco-park for the people to use in or give the nearby residences an opportunity to

generate income. The study will also enhance the condition of the land.

1.4 Scope and Limitations

This study focuses on the people who are living inside Cagayan De Oro City who are the

primary users of the proposed Recreational Eco Park. The survey was conducted to 100 random

citizens and 3 families who are residing near the existing site. The first family consist of 4

Family Members, 6 Family members in the second family, 5 family members in the third family,

having a total of 115 respondents.

1.5 Statement of the Problem

1. What Architectural features can we use in the park that can cater learning and

sustainability?

2. Does the park provide a learning experience and awareness towards conserving

and sustaining the environment?

3. How can we make the park Eco-friendly and sustainable while considering the

leisure of the user?

4. Does the Park actually shows Sustainability thru out its facilities and space?

5. How to improve interaction with people that has different culture?

6. What ways can we make the user with different cultures to learn and grow from

each other’s experiences?

1.6 Objectives

1. To provide Architectural features that can further help learning for the users.

2. To give the users of the park a learning experience and awareness towards

conserving and sustaining the environment.

3. To pursue sustainability while not affecting the leisure of the user.

4. To achieve sustainability in each facilities and spaces.

5. To boost deeper interaction with one another’s culture.

6. To develop the people or users from different cultural groups to have a mutual

interest to interact with one another, learn and grow together, while relationships

are shaped and molded from each other’s experiences.

CHAPTER 2

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the procedures that showcase how the group will gather and

analyze the data that will aid the group in the conduct of the study. In this part, the group outlines

the research strategy, research method, selection of sample size, collection of data, research

process, and the formulation of solutions to the problem.

2.1 Participants of the Study

The major clientele, which is the nearby residence of the existing site, specifically Fifteen

(15) respondents, and some locals with different cultures residing in the city, specifically One

Hundred Twenty (120) respondents.

2.2 Population Frame and Sample Size

The target respondents will be the residents of Cagayan de Oro City with any social status and

cultures with ages ranging from 12 years old up to 35 years old and above.

2.3 Method of Research Used

This study will employ a descriptive-quantitative approach of research which will be

based on the collection of data. The data obtained will be used to analyze the common problems

that Cagayan de Oro residences most likely experience and their preferred amenities/lifestyle

activities to be placed on the redevelopment of Cagayan de Oro Zayas Landfill. Considering

each respondent has a different culture from the other.

2.4 Data Gathering Instruments

The survey questionnaires and geographic information system will be used in the

gathering of data. The questionnaires contain relevant questions in relation to this study. After

the collection of questionnaires and analysis of the existing site, it will be counted and

graphically illustrated. The results will serve as the primary data of the group’s study.
2.5 Research Process

2.5.1 Gathering of Data

2.5.1.1 Conducting of Surveys

The group will be conducting various surveys for people residing in Cagayan de Oro City. It is a

mass survey to understand the residents’ preferred lifestyle choices. The group will also be

learning more about the problems the residences encounter regarding the accessibility to their

lifestyle choices.

Then the group will visit the nearby Local Government Unit to further improve the research and

to further understand more about the political, economic and technical issues of the site. The

group will be asking specific and crucial questions to the person in charged to further nourish the

research.

2.5.1.2 Site Analysis

The group will conduct a site inspection considering the physical attributes of the site. After

completion of the site visit, a detailed site analysis will be done for better comprehension of all

the features of the site.

The group will also conduct a 14 hour Ocular Inspection to know more about the site, like

knowing The Sun paths And Wind paths personally, as well as Annual Average Detail Traffic to

determine which areas are prone to traffic congestion, wherein the group will be choosing the

rush hour time frame for 4hours withinn7 days, so that the group can use these information to

their advantage. The group will also locate the best spots for Electrical post, water lines, sanitary

lines, locations for ambient spaces, open spaces for public interactions and etc.
The group will then combine and construct all the research found, finalize the different issues,

and find solutions to these problems. All of this is necessary to further improve the research in

finding the technical, physical, social, political and economic issues of the site.

2.5.2Data Analysis

2.5.2.1 Sorting of Gathered Survey Data using Excel and Graphs.

The gathered results will be summarized accordingly and will be sorted in Microsoft Excel. The

results of the survey questions will determine which amenities are to be built, which existing and

non-existing facilities are to be further developed and proposed accordingly, which part of the

eco-park amenities will be open for everyone without paying for the fees, and what mode of

transportation will be offered in the future redevelopment of the site.

2.5.2.2 Simulation of data using Spatial Analysis

This analysis explains patterns of human behaviour, which areas are heavily populated, and

which areas are prone to traffic congestion. The group will be conducting the Annual Average

Daily Traffic wherein the group will be visiting the site and will be observing the number of

vehicles passing by Zayas Landfill. This will help determine the average traffic volume near the

site. The target peak hours will be from 8:00 am to 10:00 am and 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. According

to the data gathered, traffic is heavier during weekdays with 150 number of vehicles passing by

in the morning (8 am to 10 am) and 120 number of vehicles in the afternoon (4 pm to 6 pm), and

lesser on weekends with 65 number of vehicles in the morning (8 am to 10 am) and 85 number

of vehicles in the afternoon.

The results of this analysis will determine whether or not there is a need to propose new road

entries on the dumpsite.

2.5.2.3 Data Results of Geographic Information System (GIS)

This contains spatial patterns and relationships within the Zayas Landfill that will guide

the group in the decision making of the redevelopment of the site. This will also guide the group

in locating the proposed spaces based on the sun and wind paths, as well as the zoning out of the

proposed lifestyle amenities and spaces which will be subdivided into 3 parts namely: active

areas, semi-private areas, and private areas.

This data is from the group’s 14-hour ocular inspection inside the site. We observe the

sun path, wind path and sources of noise in the area. The members are scattered in the site to

know the results depending on the location inside the site. The team also observe the active

traffic and flow of the vehicles passing by.

2.5.3 Report of Findings

The group will then come up with a design that targets the objectives of the study.

Chapter 3

CHAPTER 4
SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

4.1 SUMMARY

As the research was conducted, some essential discoveries were made and some

information were gathered from the primary users. With this information the team have come up

with design interventions that cater and considers the wants and the needs of the users.

Moreover, in the group’s survey a huge percent of the respondents have agreed that the

redevelopment of the landfill should be implemented. Some were excited to hear about the

redevelopment and others (especially the residence) thought that it was about time the landfill is

redeveloped. Others thought it will be another tourist spot in the city Cagayan de Oro and this

will invite more tourists with different interests from different cultures to come and visit the city.

This research was conducted to find out the opinion of the users and consider their

preferences, since they are the prime users of the future developed park. With the research

conducted, The park will now be functional enough for the users. As we have analyzed the data

gathered, most of the respondents concurred that the redevelopment really is essential not only

for the environment but also for their health and their interests. This proposal somehow gives

maximum time productivity for the users, to interact and enjoy the moment inside the park.

Overall the survey was of great success, one hundred thirty five (135) respondents were surveyed

and all of them had their own different views on this proposal. Although there were some

respondents who see it negatively, everyone is entitled to whatever perspective they have in

mind, and the group respects that principle. Somehow, the research has great and positive

reviews.
Sales

1. Strongly DisAgree 2. Disagree 3. Maybe 4. Agree 5. Strongly Agree

According to the data shown above in our survey, a total of sixty-five percent (65%) or

84 of the total respondents surveyed strongly agreed of this proposed platform. It simply shows

that not only majority of the total respondent agreed on the proposal, but more or less this

proposal does not only become a good asset but as shown in the data above, it is now treated as a

necessity for the users especially the residence living near the area for the landfill to be

redeveloped and turn it into something that will not only benefit the user but also for the

environment.
4.2 CONCLUSION

Overall, the research was of complete approval. Many respondents with different culture

agreed with this study and are in support of the amendment if ever it is approved. As said before,

the problems of the current site will be solved thru the design interventions of the team.

Apparently the current landfill can’t be functional anymore since there is an increasing

population living around it. And due to the increasing number of residences around the site it is

now necessary to redevelop the landfill for it not to affect the health of the residences and further

affect the environment.

This redevelopment will be good not only for the environment but also for the residences,

the residences will lessen their worries about their health while enjoying a new park within their

premises. This also shows that this proposal is not only wanted by the residences, but is actually

needed by them, as it is even considered a necessity for the residences.

The group will use Architectural features that will not harm the environment and will

adapt to the concept. The team will use a natural Architectural feature to further promote

sustainability and Eco-Friendly.

The group will make sure that the park will provide a learning experience and awareness

towards conserving and sustaining the environment by making its ambiance clean and applying

signs of awareness to the environment, and proper location for disposal area (trash cans) will be

widely spread across the park. The teams design will also show conserving and sustaining the

environment, by using solar energy, and other natural ways.

The group will make the park Eco-Friendly and sustainable while considering the leisure

of the user by its overall look. The different leisure of the users will be intact but with a mix of
an Eco-Friendly ambiance and a multi-cultural surrounding through clean and green spaces and

buildings that are inspired by nature and culture.

The group’s goal is that the park will use natural energy like solar energy. The group will

also use methane as a source of energy. And this idea will be applied to all the facilities in the

park to promote a natural, sustainable, and multi-cultural process.

The group will provide amenities like plazas, Picnic areas, amphitheater and gardens that

can help people with different cultures to interact with one another and give them opportunities

to talk, play, and work so that they can learn and grow from each other’s experience.

4.3 RECOMMENDATION

As the population of the residences living near the landfill grows, it is in need of a

redevelopment that would further consider the well-being of the residence and also for the

environment. And make the site more attractive for the people of the city, and inviting them to

come and visit Zayas. The group recommend that this redevelopment must be implemented since

it would be beneficiary for the residence and it would also benefit the City.

4.3.1Proposed Eco-san

About

Ecological Sanitation, or widely known as Ecosan, is an alternative holistic

approach for ecological and economical sustainable sanitation. This approach is

based on the principles of preventing pollution, sanitizing human excreta and using
urine and feces as resources in agriculture. It is a logistical sanitation approach

designed to solve the numerous problems of conventional sanitation, e.g., sewerage

and septic tank systems. Ecosan is based on the idea that saves water, protects water

quality, prevents pollution and returns valuable nutrients into the loop which our

food security depends

4.3.1.1How it works

Well designed and operated ecosan systems provide a hygienically safe and economical way to

do this. The set up requires skills which can be imparted to the youth as part of a programme to

spread the technology in different parts of the country, and the manure and dry matter for bio-

fuel generated can be a source of income as it can be sold to those that need it. Thus, ecosan

toilet can open up opportunities for job opportunities and income generation while

simultaneously protecting the environment.

The ecosan toilet comprises one or two chambers, a pit that does not exceed two metres deep

which is sealed with concrete to prevent contact between excreta and soil, a separate pipe for

urine, and a vent pipe to trap flies and other insects, and lids on the side, front or back to remove

the composted matter.

There are several designs but all use composting as a way to break the waste. It uses rapid

aerobic (using oxygen) composting in which bacteria that thrive at high temperatures oxidise

(break down) the waste into its components, some of which are consumed in the process,

reducing volume and eliminating harmful germs.

Drainage of liquid via a separate drain is featured in some units, as the aerobic composting

process requires moisture levels to be controlled: too dry—and the mass decomposes slowly or

not at all; too wet—and anaerobic organisms thrive (where there is no oxygen), creating

undesirable odours. This separated liquid may be diverted to another system or collected for

other uses.

Urine can contain up to 90 per cent of the nitrogen, up to 50 per cent of the phosphorus and up to

70 per cent of the potassium present in human excreta. In healthy individuals, it is usually free of

germs, although undiluted it may contain levels of inorganic salts and organic compounds at

levels toxic to plants.

4.3.2 Proposed Methane Gas Power

About

Methane is a very powerful greenhouse gas. One pound of methane traps 25 times more heat in

the atmosphere than a pound of carbon dioxide. Methane is also the main ingredient in natural

gas. Because methane can be captured from landfills, it can be burned to produce electricity, heat

buildings, or power garbage trucks. Capturing methane before it gets into the atmosphere also

helps reduce the effects of climate change.

Methane can also be captured from farm digesters, which are big tanks that contain manure and

other waste from barns that house livestock such as cows and pigs.
4.3.2.1 How it works

1. Trash decomposes (or rots) in landfills, creating methane gas.

2. Methane rises to the top of the landfill and is collected in pipes.

3. The methane is burned to produce heat or generate electricity.

Landfill gas is collected from landfills by drilling "wells" into the landfills, and collecting the

gases through pipes. Once the landfill gas is processed, it can be combined with natural gas to

fuel conventional combustion turbines or used to fuel small combustion or combined cycle

turbines. Landfill gas may also be used in fuel cell technologies, which use chemical reactions to

create electricity, and are much more efficient than combustion turbines.

4.3.2.2 What are the environmental impacts?

Use of the gas produced by landfills may reduce the harmful environmental impacts that would

otherwise result from landfill operations. Landfill gas electricity generation offers major air

quality benefits where landfills already exist or where the decision to build the landfill has

already been made.

A landfill gas power plant burns a waste - methane --- that would otherwise be released into the

atmosphere or burned off in a flaring process. Methane is a highly potent agent of global climate

change, having about 23 times the negative impact on a pound-by-pound basis as CO2. Landfill

gas combustion produces some CO2, but the impact of these emissions on global climate change

is offset many times over by the methane emission reductions.

Landfill gas generators produce nitrogen oxides emissions that vary widely from one site to

another, depending on the type of generator and the extent to which steps have been taken to

minimize such emissions. Combustion of landfill gas can also result in the release of organic

compounds and trace amounts of toxic materials, including mercury and dioxins, although such

releases are at levels lower than if the landfill gas is flared.

There are few water impacts associated with landfill gas power plants. Unlike other power plants

that rely upon water for cooling, landfill gas power plants are usually very small, and therefore

pollution discharges into local lakes or streams are typically quite small.

4.3.3 Proposed Solar Power

solar has become the world’s fastest-growing source of power – marking the first time that solar

energy’s growth has surpassed that of all other fuels. In the coming years, we will all be enjoying

the benefits of solar-generated electricity in one way or another.

4.3.3.1 How Do Solar Panels Work?

When photons hit a solar cell, they knock electrons loose from their atoms. If conductors are

attached to the positive and negative sides of a cell, it forms an electrical circuit. When electrons

flow through such a circuit, they generate electricity. Multiple cells make up a solar panel, and

multiple panels (modules) can be wired together to form a solar array. The more panels you can

deploy; the more energy you can expect to generate.

How Do Solar Panels Generate Electricity?

PV solar panels generate direct current (DC) electricity. With DC electricity, electrons flow in

one direction around a circuit. This example shows a battery powering a light bulb. The electrons

move from the negative side of the battery, through the lamp, and return to the positive side of

the battery.
With AC (alternating current) electricity, electrons are pushed and pulled, periodically reversing

direction, much like the cylinder of a car’s engine. Generators create AC electricity when a coil

of wire is spun next to a magnet. Many different energy sources can “turn the handle” of this

generator, such as gas or diesel fuel, hydroelectricity, nuclear, coal, wind, or solar.

AC electricity was chosen for the U.S. electrical power grid, primarily because it is less

expensive to transmit over long distances. However, solar panels create DC electricity. How do

we get DC electricity into the AC grid? We use an inverter.

4.4 Appendix

4.4.3 Appendix A

We have been given a task to design and redeveloped the existing dumpsite in Cagayan

De Oro City. To change the landfill into an eco-friendly park that is not only safe and healthy for

the people but also for the environment. So the team started by gathering data and information

about the site by conducting a 14 hour ocular inspection inside the site, observing the wind path,

sun path and traffic on the site. The team team then conducted a survey that can further help

nourish the research.. There were different problems found in the site like traffic, environment ,

water / electric supply and ETC. The found data was then thoroughly analyzed and considered,

So that the team can conduct a solution and can decide on different kinds of design interventions

for the site. The team thought of different solutions that can help the site and to further improve

the research. But the team must consider the different problems of the site. One problem is traffic

, if the proposed redevelopment will be implemented and constructed then traffic is one problem

in the site. The team decided on not letting vehicles go inside the park but the team will provide a

parking area and the team will also provide a drop off for the people to use. To further promote

an eco friendly area and make people walk is a good concept. Another problem is the

environment or the odor of the place , since it was a dumpsite then it is natural that it will have a

foul smell but the team will lessen this by planting a generous amount of plant to help

compensate the smell.
