Energy Conservation
What is Energy
• Energy is defined as the ability or the capacity to do
work.
• Energy lights our cities, power our vehicles and runs
machinery in factories. It warms and cools our
homes, cooks our food plays our music and gives us
pictures on television.
• According to first law of thermodynamics:
Energy can neither be created nor be destroyed but
can be transformed from one form to another.

RENEWABLE SOURCES
• Can’t be generated continuously
• Can be generated continuously without decay of the source.
practically without decay of source.
• Responsible for 91-94% of carbon
• Responsible for 3-4% of carbon dioxide in environment.
dioxide in the environment.
• Main reason behind global
• Not a reason behind global warming warming.
Energy Conservation

• Energy conservation refers to efforts made to reduce the energy

consumption.
• Energy conservation can be achieved through increased efficient
energy use or reduced consumption from non-renewable energy
sources.
• Energy conservation is often the most economical solution to energy
shortages.
Why to conserve it?
• We have limited sources available on earth.
• Our demand is increasing day by day.
• It is possible that someday most of the non-
renewable sources will be exhausted and we must
switch over to alternate energy.
What we can do?
• RECYCLE waste materials into new products to new prevent waste of
potentially useful materials.
• REPLACE old light bulbs with energy saving fluorescent bulbs. They
may cost more but will save you more in the long run.
• Turn off all electronic devices that are not in use. Not only turn them
off but try to remember to unplug. You will be surprised how much
you will save with simple step.
Recycling is an excellent way of saving energy
and conserving the environment
• 1 recycled tin would save enough energy to power a television for 3
hours.
• 1 recycled glass bottle would save enough energy to power a
computer for 25 minutes.
• 1 recycled plastic bottle would save enough energy to power a 60-
watt light bulb for 3 hours.
• 70 % less energy is required to recycle paper compared with making it
from raw material.
Three R’s
• The slogan reduce, reuse and recycle is widely used to raise
awareness against the use of non-renewable source of
energy.

1. Reduce consumption.
2. Reuse manufactured products.
3. Recycle raw material.
