Hispanic Community Guide

The Hispanic community is a form of family experience. Many outside sources give the
community the meaning that it does. The source of this community is family and family is the
highest level in this discourse community. Every aspect in this community such as food, music,
traditions, gatherings all relates to a family matter in any way.
Traditions show the way their community’s work and what their order is in everything that
they do. Religious and normal practices that are accepted in the things they do yearly or daily.
The Hispanic community relates traditions to help them connect with family, friends, and the
country as some do explain it as “glue and it keeps everyone together as one and working in one
way to keep the flow of what they believe going. Around Christmas time is when a lot of
Hispanic traditions come into play. Some examples of the traditions are the “La Misa de Gallo”
which translates to midnight mass and Hispanics due to this the night before Christmas to
commemorate the birth of Jesus. Another tradition is “Los Farolitos y Luminarias” which
translates to festive lanterns as they do this to celebrate the day of immaculate conception and for
Christmas, the list goes on. Different important traditions have a greater meaning in the lives of
Hispanics. “Dia de Los Muertos” which translates to Day of the Dead as this tradition is one of
the more important ones due to this being the connections with the family members and friends
who have passed away. This tradition is celebrated on November 1st, as this is one of the most
important because it gives an open door to the souls who are living in the afterlife, during this
day the community sets ups altars which they put pictures of their pasted loved ones and
surround it with all of the favorite items that they enjoyed while they were alive. This tradition
gives the living one day to feel like they are once again connected and can feel the love with the
deceased in their life.
It would be one of the most difficult things to choose one genre in the Hispanic community.
Food, Music, Art, Beliefs, the family are just some of the many genres that are presented in this
growing community. As one genre that has huge popularity is the music that this culture brings
to surface. Music in the Hispanic community means a great deal as the music can pull a
community together by singing dancing and simply by the connections that the song gives to
people. In the music genre for the Hispanic community, the genres are Music of Latin America,
Latin rock, Latin hip hop, and Latin trap. In the Hispanic culture, there will not be an event that
happens without music as this goes for parties, church masses and even just family functions and
gatherings. The most important instruments that are used in this culture are mostly the guitar,
violin, and harp, also including wind instruments like the flute and charities. The main reason
for music being an important genre always incorporated in this community is that it reflects the
diversity and the history of what this community brings as even in today’s music it is still
creating the diversity that the community has always wanted to define.
The language used in this community is quite different. There are two different languages use
which is English and Spanish. Within the community, the two do get combined and this language
is Spanglish. Spanglish is a hybrid language combining words and idioms from both English and
Spanish. The meaning of it all is one-two people are having a conversation they switch from
English to Spanish or vice verses, and it does not even have to be full sentences in English or
Spanish but it can just be even a single word and it will be considered Spanglish.
Examples Of Spanglish Linear- To Link, Updatear- To Update, Googlear- To Google, Clickear-
To click, El Parking- Parking Lot, Estas ready? - Are you Read, Jamberger- Hamburger, El
Shopping- The Mall, Ver Un Show- Watch A show.
Language and Traditions is a big part of the Hispanic culture. These two aspects make this
community what it is and everyday it shapes it even more. The amount of time and effort that
goes into this community every day is spectacular as the people involved want to respect and
elaborate on their values. Within and out of the community there is shared love and connections
that give a warm and welcome feel. The Hispanic community is one of the greatest to follow as it
will teach and give new knowledge to one.

Refection
The draft was the most important and crucial part of this assignment. In the draft I just
put all of my ideas in order and laid everything out and once it come to writing the final draft I
just had to add in a few examples and make sure what I was writing about was flowing. Also I
used my past assignment to help me with the usage guide as I picked the best website to give me
all the information that I needed to add into what I was explaining. I addressed the SLO with the
writing as a social act as in my writing I explained the community on a local and national level
as I explained that each tradition is used in everyday lives of people in this community. With this
assignment I think it makes my writing better due to it making me elaborate on everything I am
describing so that any type of audience could understand if they were to read my assignment.
