Session Goals
1) Better understand “why” computer science
2) Identify some reasons “why” computer
science for your ISD or district
3) Learn more about computer science
implementation
4) Discover resources to help with computer
science education implementation

Michigan’s Vision for K-12 Computer
Science
All learners will develop foundational computer science skills to
solve problems and be constructive citizens. Students will:
• Learn new approaches to problem solving;
• Harness the power of computational thinking; and
• Use computer science tools to create technology.
Why Should We Teach Computer
Science?
• Read the Vision for Computer Science
Activity
• Take two-three minutes to read through
the sheet and consider rationale for
teaching CS
• Select your top three rationale
Discussion
• Find a partner and discuss your
reasoning for your top three (4 minutes)
• You and a partner will join a new group
and share (3 minutes)
Whole Group Reflection
• Were there rationale for CS education that you
hadn’t previously considered?
• Were they among your top three selections?

• What did you notice about the rationale that

were more popular?
• Are there any reasons that CS education is
important that are missing?
Values Inform Implementation

“We should teach CS because it will allow youth to

solve problems in their communities through
technology.”

Impact areas:
● Technological, Social, and Scientific Innovation (main)
● Equity and Social Justice
● Citizenship and Civic Engagement

...what could this mean for instruction? How might

pedagogy look under this rationale? (5 minutes)
Linking Values to Instruction and
Implementation
...there are major disparities in women in STEM fields
and universal CSed is part of addressing that, then we
will...

- Develop or curate curriculum relevant to girls/women

- Expand out-of-school opportunities such as Girls Who
Code, Black Girls Code
- Identify local female computer science experts who
can mentor all students
Standards implementation is a
local district decision...
...so what might implementation look like at a local level?

Let’s explore some examples...

Terms
1. Debugging
2. Creating algorithms
3. Collaboration

Standards
ELA: RF.K.1.d- Recognize and name all
upper- and lowercase letters of the
alphabet.
Math:K.CC.A.2- Count forward
beginning from a given number within
the known sequence (instead of having Letter Sound Cards
to begin at 1)
Social Studies: K – G1.0.2 Use
environmental directions or positional words
(up/down, in/out, above/below) to identify
significant locations in the classroom.

Lesson Objective:
make the robot
travel to the letter
that matches the
sound on the card

The results
● Student growth both academically
and socially

● Problem Solvers

● Gave ALL learners a time to shine

● Greater sense of team

building/collaboration

● Excitement and passion for learning
