Water, a substance composed of

the chemical, elements,
hydrogen and oxygen and existing
in gaseous, liquid, and solid states.
A tasteless and odourless liquid at
room temperature, it has the
important ability to dissolve many
other substances. Indeed, the
versatility of water as a solvent is
essential to living organisms. Lifeis
believed to have originated in the
aqueous solutions of the
world’s oceans, and living
organisms depend on aqueous
solutions, such as blood and
digestive juices, for biological
processes. In small quantities water
appears colourless, but water
actually has an intrinsic blue colour
caused by slight absorption
of light at red wavelengths. h
The name of the organization says it
all. Their projects don’t only focus
on food, water, and climate, but on
wildlife as well. In fact, they exert
effort to ensure the survival of the

How to Conserve Water
Toilets
Don’t Use the Toilet as an Ashtray or
Wastebasket
Every time you flush a cigarette
butt, facial tissue, or other small bit
of trash, you’re wasting gallons of
water. Put them in the garbage, or
better yet, recycle.
Showers
Take Shorter Showers
One way to cut down on water use
is to turn off the shower after
soaping up, then turn it back on to
rinse. A four-minute shower uses
approximately 20 to 40 gallons of
water. You can also install a
simple shower timer, available from
Eartheasy or your local water utility.
Recycle Your Water Where You Can
Collect the cold water you run
before it’s hot enough to shower
and use it to water plants or flush
the toilet (known as a bucket flush).
Rinse water from dishes and food
preparation can be collected and
used to soak other dishes.

Turn Off the Water After You Wet
Your Toothbrush
There is no need to keep the water
running while brushing your teeth.
Just wet your brush and fill a glass
for mouth rinsing.
Garden
Harvest Rainwater for Watering
Vegetable Beds
Use rain barrels or a catchment
system to capture valuable
rainwater from your roof. Plants
prefer untreated water, so your
garden will be healthier while you
cut your water bill.
Add Organic Matter to Your Garden
Beds
Adding organic material to your soil
will help increase its absorption and
water retention. Areas that are
already planted can be ‘top
dressed’ with compost or organic
matter every year.
Prevent Water Pollution
1.DO NOT pour fat from cooking or
any other type of fat, oil, or grease
down the sink. Keep a “fat jar”
under the sink to collect the fat and
discard in the solid waste when full.
2.DO NOT dispose of household
chemicals or cleaning agents down
the sink or toilet.
3.Avoid using the toilet as a
wastebasket. Most tissues,
wrappers, dust cloths, and other
paper goods should be properly
discarded in a wastebasket.
4.Minimize the use of pesticides,
herbicides, fertilizers. DO NOT
dispose of these chemicals, motor
oil, or other automotive fluids into
the sanitary sewer or storm sewer
systems. Both of them end at the
river.
5. Avoid using a garbage disposal.
Keep solid wastes solid. Make a
compost pile from vegetable
scraps.
