by 11:30… midnight at the latest. I mean you're always saying that you don't have any friends… and that you
never go out… Come on!
Mia: I… I don't think I can make it this time. I haven't been feeling well lately.
Michael: Yeah, because you study too much. Well, we'll have a lot of fun. Come on! Relax. [Well…] And it's Theresa's
birthday, too. And we're giving her a small birthday party after the film. Come on. Best friends always stick
together.
Mia: Oh. Okay.
Michael: Great. I'll pick you up at 7:00.
Mia: Okay. See you then, but I have to be back by 11:30.
Michael: Ah, 11:30… midnight. It's all the same. See you at 7:00.

I am thirty years old, rather tall and I have dark eyes and long brown hair. I wear casual clothes as I teach students in a
relaxed atmosphere. I enjoy my job because I get to meet and help so many different people from all over the world. During
my spare time, I like playing tennis, which I play at least three times a week. I also love listening to classical music and I
must admit that I spend a lot of money on buying new CDs! I live in a pretty seaside town on the Portuguese coast. I enjoy
eating great Portuguese food and laughing with the likable people who work in the restaurant where I usually go.

Temple Bar is the coolest place on the planet! You can eat all kinds of food here. There are lots of cafés, pubs and music

I also love going shopping in Grafton Street. It’s in the city centre, and there are always lots of shoppers and street

Dublin was a Viking city called Dyflin. The Viking Splash Tour is a ride in an amphibious truck which goes on land as well as

Healthy eating
Ben: Today we want to know how much our listeners know about healthy food. In the studio, we’ve got two listeners who
want to test what they know: Alana and Liam.
Alana and Liam: Hi!
Ben: OK, guys. So, do you think you know a lot about healthy eating?
Alana: I think I know quite a bit.
Liam: Yeah, I hope I do.
Ben: Well, we’ve got five questions. And for the person who gets the most questions correct, there’s a prize: this really big box
of doughnuts. Not at all healthy, but delicious. Are you ready?
Alana: Yes, this is my buzzer.
Ben: Liam?
Liam: Here’s my buzzer.
Ben: OK. first question. According to experts, how often should you eat fish?
Is it… once a week, twice a week or every day?
Alana: Erm, I think… once a week.
Liam: It’s every day.
Ben: And the answer is ... twice a week. But don’t worry, here’s question two.
How much water should you drink in a day? 1 litre, 2 litres or three litres.
Liam: Three litres. Definitely.
Alana: Is it one litre?
Ben: Oooh, wrong again! They say we need to drink two litres a day.
Alana and Liam: What?
Alana: Really?
Liam: That’s so much!
Ben: Question three. What contains the most vitamin C? Potatoes, broccoli or oranges?
Liam: It’s oranges.
Ben: You’re right! Well done. Oranges have the most vitamin C. Question four. Which of these foods does not contain
protein? Eggs, meat, cucumber?
Alana: Me first.
Liam: Oy!
Alana: Ha, I’m faster. It’s cucumber.
Liam: Oh, that’s my answer too. Easy!
Ben: That’s right. Cucumber doesn’t contain protein. And here’s the final question. It’s one point

each at the moment. One all. Who’s going to get this question right? Which is the most important meal of the day?
Breakfast, lunch or dinner?
Alana: It’s dinner.
Liam: No, it’s breakfast. It gives you the energy you need for the day.
Ben: Breakfast is the correct answer! So that’s two points for Liam and just one point for Alana. Well done, Liam. You win
this lovely box of doughnuts.

Ben: Just don’t eat them all yourself!
Liam: I won’t.

Let’s Move!
The Wanted, Carly Rae Jepsen, Bella Thorne, and Austin Mahone are just a few of the celebs who recorded a music
video to get kids across the country to get up and move!
Michelle Obama is the one who has started a campaign called Let’s Move. She wants American kids to eat better and be
more active. “We don’t want an unhealthy future for our kids or our country”, she says. “We have to act.”
What’s the campaign doing? It’s introducing healthier food, such as salad bars, into school canteens across the country. It’s
building more sports facilities and finding safe ways to cycle or walk to school.
Mrs Obama’s famous friends are helping out too. Beyoncé has made a dance routine DVD for US school students. But not
everyone thinks it’s a good idea. Some people say, “Let parents and families decide what to eat. It’s not the government’s
business what people put on their plates”.
Do the students like the new salad bars as they wait in the lunch line? “Yes”, says pupil Luciano Cabrera of Miami. “Salad
bars are important because salads are nutritious and help you and your bones grow.”
America’s problem
The statistics are scary. Over the past three decades, childhood obesity rates have tripled and one in three kids is
overweight. This can lead to diabetes, heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure and asthma in children. This initiative
wants to solve the problem of childhood obesity within a generation.

Play it smart with body art

Hi, my name is Charlie, and I'm a freelance fashion reporter.
During adolescence teens normally want to establish their own identity. They wear unusual clothes, listen to different music
and some want to express themselves through body art like tattoos and piercing. In fact, tattoos can be unique and
individual, but some teens decide to get a tattoo just to rebel against their parents or because of peer pressure. This is a
serious issue. While hairstyles and the way they dress are easy to change, tattoos and body piercing are usually permanent.
And what you find cool at sixteen may seem ridiculous to you at thirty-five. Having a tattoo removed can be difficult and
costly, and body piercing can leave scars and unwanted holes.
So I’m going to give you some advice. Let’s start with the considerations you need to take into account and the decisions
you must make before you set foot into a tattoo or piercing shop.
First, you should think about where you want the tattoo or piercing, and evaluate that area, for how it will stretch, if it will
cause you any problems when you choose your career, etc. Getting a tattoo on your arms or your neck, or a piercing on your
tongue, can stop you from getting hired at certain places.
Another thing you should consider is the pain level because these procedures are usually painful, can cause allergic
reactions and carry other health risks. When you get your piercing, for example, get a good metal because cheap metal can
irritate your skin.
The next thing to do, is look at the possible tattooing and piercing studios, and find one with a good reputation so that you
can feel safe.
And of course, you mustn’t forget to ask for your parents’ permission; it’s essential.
These are some of the things you need to think of before getting a tattoo or a piercing.

Journalist: I know you’re from Canada and the USA. But which part?
Travie: Geneva, a city in Ontario and Seneca counties in the US state of New York.
Journalist: Why did you decide to call your band Gym Class Heroes?
Matt: Because Travis and I became friends during Physical Education classes at high school in New York.
Journalist: When did you form your band?
Matt: In 1997, playing at birthday parties and clubs.
Journalist: What was your first success?
Travie: I would say the album As Cruel As Schoolchildren. Fortunately, the album was certified

Journalist: Great! What are your musical influences?
Travie: Each member draws from different types of music for inspiration. I prefer funk and rock stylistics. I may say I’m
inspired by groups such as Green Day and Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Matt: There aren’t many types we agree on. But for me I would cite 1970s blue-eyed soul group, Hall and Oates, as
my biggest musical influence.
Journalist: Have you already won any prizes?
Travie: Yes. In 2007 we won Best New Artist at MTV Video Music Awards.
Journalist: Thank you for your time.

The Internet
Presenter: Today we’re talking to two students, Cathy and Mark, about the Internet. Let’s start with you, Mark. Do you like
surfing the Internet?
Mark: Yes, in my free time, I really like surfing the Internet. When I get home from school, I turn on my computer, wait
until it boots up completely, and then I go online.
Presenter: What about you, Cathy?
Cathy: I don’t spend much time surfing the web; only when I need to. I have used the Internet for some projects and
homework assignments. I used the Internet for revision, for my GCSEs, and that was really useful, to be able to
get online answers. I found that incredibly helpful. But you might have to trail through hundreds of sites until you
find an actually relevant site.
Presenter: So, do you think the Internet is a useful tool for students?
Mark: Yes, of course… it’s useful for anyone. The advent of the Internet has vastly changed the way in which people
search for and access information. News travels more quickly than ever, and current affairs can be discussed all
over the world instantaneously via forums, blogs, and social networks.
Presenter: Now there’s the question of social networks. How long do you spend on social networking sites every week?
Mark: Longer than I should. I have to confess that I check my account every day. I chat with my classmates and
friends almost every day. I have lots of friends, but I don’t accept just anyone to be my friend; it has to be
someone I know and trust.
Presenter: What about you, Cathy?
Cathy: Oh, I’ve opened an account, but I don’t use it much. I don’t like virtual friends. Many ‘friends’ you meet on a
social networking site aren’t really friends: they’re people you’ve met through other people for five minutes at a
party. And then they share everything online. They post photos and everyone is trying to look so cool in their
photos – and it’s so fake, not who they really are. Everyone wants you to think they’re having a great time and
are so happy. Ridiculous.
Presenter: Well… it seems that you don’t really like social networks – or don’t like them at all!

Carl: Two years ago.
Journalist: Now, tell us all the other extreme sports you're into.
Carl: I also like wakeboarding and surfing.
Journalist: Does all your family like doing extreme sports?
Carl: Yes, we all spend our weekends on the Canyon Lake in the summer. I also love to go to the skateboard park
after school. Sometimes I skate with my older brother and some schoolmates.
Journalist: How do you decide if the day brings skateboarding, wakeboarding or another sport?
Carl: It definitely depends on the time of year. I can go skateboarding just about any time.
Journalist: You live in the centre of skateboarding. What's it like having access to lots of skateboard parks and contests?
Carl: It's just awesome! The best skateboard parks that we have here in Southern California are all within an hour or

the way home from school or at lunch or meet up with friends at the weekends.
Journalist: What was the latest contest you attended?
Carl: I went to GvR Etnies. Mostly to watch the bowl contests.
Journalist: What sport are you doing today?
Carl: I’m very busy today. I have to study for a science test.

Jim: What is more British than the Queen, a cup of tea or the Beatles?
Jenny: Er ... red London buses?
Jim: No! Here’s a clue: You can eat it.
Jenny: Ah, then it must be fish and chips.
Jim: Correct! In two different surveys, people said the most British thing was fish and chips.
Jenny: And here are three fish and chip facts.
Jim: One. Britain’s first fish and chip shop opened more than 150 years ago, in 1860 in London!
Jenny: Two. Fish and chips are Britain’s favourite takeaway!
Jim: Three. A portion of fish and chips has 595 calories – that’s fewer than pizza or a burger and chips.
Jenny: Now, Jim, here’s the big question – what do you have on your fish and chips? Do you have ketchup or do you
have salt and vinegar?
Jim: It has to be salt and vinegar.
Jenny: Me, too! Let’s see who agrees with us. Our reporter Alan is outside a fish and chip shop near the studio. Hi, Alan!
Alan: Hi, Jenny. There’s a delicious smell coming from this fish and chip shop, which is called ‘Mr Chips’.
Jenny: Is it busy?
Alan: It’s lunchtime, so it’s very busy. There’s a queue outside. Three students have just bought their fish and chips.
Excuse me, can I ask you a question?
Student 1: Yes, but hurry up – I’m starving!
Alan: What did you put on your fish and chips – ketchup or salt and vinegar?
Student 1: Always ketchup – you can’t have chips without ketchup!
Alan: How about you?
Student 2: Definitely salt and vinegar. It’s a crime to put ketchup on fish and chips.
Alan: So that’s one for ketchup and one for salt and vinegar. Our third student gets the deciding vote.
Student 3: I used to live in Wigan, in north-west England and up there; we have gravy on our chips, or curry sauce! But they
don’t serve it here in London, so now I have … ketchup!
Alan: So, Jenny, ketchup wins here at Mr Chips. I haven’t had any lunch yet, so I’m going to get some chips!
Jenny: Good idea! Thanks Alan!

Fátima Lopes
Fátima Lopes is a famous Portuguese fashion designer. She was born on March 8th, 1965 on the Portuguese island of
Madeira. She was born and grew up in its capital city, Funchal. Since an early age she showed an interest in fashion and
during her adolescence, unhappy with what the shops had to offer in terms of clothing, started to design her own clothes.
Being fluent in English, French and German, she worked as a tourist guide for a local travel agency.
In 1990 Fátima moved to Lisbon, where she believed she could better pursue a career as a fashion designer. With a
friend she opened a boutique named "Versus", which sold mainly clothes from international designers.
In 1992 Fátima Lopes launched her own brand. She presented her first collection and opened the first “Fátima Lopes”
boutique.
In 1996, the designer opened her first international store in Paris and also expanded to other areas.
At the same time she began to diversify her collections by creating bags and shoes for both men and women.
In December 1998, she started the management of the model agency "FACE MODELS" in Lisbon.
In March 1999 Fátima Lopes became the first Portuguese fashion designer to take part in “Paris Fashion Week”, seeing
her creations along side the major international fashion designers.
Always irreverent, in 2000 she surprised the world by appearing on a catwalk herself in Paris wearing the world's most
expensive bikini, made out of gold and diamonds, with an estimated value of one million dollars.
In 2003 she opened her first brand store in the United States, located in Melrose Avenue in the city of Los Angeles.
Fátima Lopes is responsible for the official outfits of the Portuguese football team.
She has been recognized with several awards.

Our school is going to create a Green Club.

First, of course, the Club must have a name. This name is going to be chosen by the students at the first meeting.
This is a club for children and teenagers between the ages of eight and seventeen who want to improve the environment.
The most important factor of course is that the students should be interested and willing to take action.
Members can participate in workshops, field trips and interact with experts on various environmental issues they can
develop projects and other activities.
They will help solve environmental problems and make new friends too.
For teachers, it is a wonderful opportunity to create awareness; shape attitudes and help students participate in activities
in the real world.
The club will be free and the only thing they need to bring next Monday are gloves. We are going to plant some trees
around the school playground.
If you are interested, you can join us and make a difference.

TIME OUT

Unusual Hobbies
People discover or invent the oddest activities to occupy their time never wondering if what they're doing is actually a
waste of time or not. I collect plain, glossy chocolate wrappers, but only because I have a major crafts project on my mind,
so it’s not so weird, right? Some people do the strangest things, and somehow get others involved as well.
Have you ever wanted to step out of the crowd and do something different? Are you the kind of person who likes the
crazy side of life? Then the unusual hobbies listed here in this report will be quite helpful.

UFO Spotting
A lot of people claim to have seen a UFO (unidentified flying object) and a smaller number have tales of meeting an ALF
(alien-life form) or even being abducted by extraterrestrials. Read through some books or browse through the web, and find
out about places that have a maximum number of sightings. Get a good pair of binoculars and a video camera to record
anything that you may spot. But don’t take foolish risks: go in a group, and always ask permission before you enter private
property.

Starting a Fan Club

Gathering a group of people who find a common interest in, say, a famous sportsman or sportswoman, or actor or
actress, or band or singer would seem to be fun. You could start up your own club where the fans can get together and
watch documentaries about your heroes and heroines, movie marathons or concerts for hours on end over the weekend.
Decorate the fan club room with posters and memorabilia that you can browse around. You can buy such things from
souvenir stores or second-hand shops, or even bring them from the celebrities’ hometowns. Celebrate their birthdays, read
up on them extensively and tour the country to catch a glimpse of your idols in the flesh. And, of course, don’t forget your
cameras and autograph books!

Tea/Coffee/Chocolate Wrappers Collection

Travel the country or around the world (or go to specialist shops in your town) looking for exotic blends of coffee, tea and
chocolate products keeping the packaging (tins, jars, packets and wrappers) for collection purposes. You can add details
below each one, like where you got it from and the date when you bought it. You can write an account of how these products
are grown, processed and served. If you do it well and send it to the manufacturers, they will probably send you a letter of
thanks and they might even send you a box of their products to share with your friends.

FOOD AND HEALTH

One Direction's Favourite Foods Revealed!

One Direction are rich and famous, but that doesn't mean they're picky. The boys actually have pretty simple requests when
it comes to what they want to eat!
The band's personal chef, Sara Nicholas, revealed what each band member wants to munch on while they're touring,
and the guys don't have diva demands to fill their bellies.
"Liam Payne likes his bacon, steak and vegetables, while Louis eats anything, but a bowl of Special K is his favourite,"
Sara said. "Zayn is very easy to please. He just likes pasta with spicy chicken. He's not a foodie and eats whatever's going."

Niall Horan isn't too difficult, either! "Niall likes more simple food, like sausage and mash, pies, creamy chicken pasta or
chicken."
The only one who's a little choosy about what he chews? Harry Styles because he wants to gain weight! A source said,
"He's doing extra weight training and fitness as he's desperate to stop looking 'boyish' and become more manly."
As for what they sip when they’re backstage? No alcohol here! Louis loves to drink tea, but the guys mainly drink juice
and water and the occasional soda. Yum!

Why would you want to limit the spectrum of beauty to an "ideal" when you, as a popular women's magazine, have the

feel uncomfortable about achieving. Most of the women, and certainly most of the adolescent girls, in the United States do
not feel completely secure about themselves, especially about their appearance; is insecurity something you want to
advocate? As American women, we don't need discouragement, but inspiration.

Part 1

Interview with Sylvia Earle

Ever since she was knocked over by a wave as a little girl, oceanographer Dr Sylvia Earle has been fascinated by the
ocean. One of the world's best known marine scientists and a National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence, Earle loves to
dive deep into the ocean. She has spent much of her life in or under the waves. Now in her effort to save the oceans, she
wants to make it uncool to eat a tuna fish sandwich and she also wants to understand the impact that humans have on the
ocean each time we eat seafood or use pesticide on the garden bugs.

Part 2
How did you get to be a scientist or explorer?

Earle: It was easy. I started out as a kid and never did grow up. The best scientists and explorers have the attributes of kids!
They ask questions and have a sense of wonder. They have curiosity. Who, what, where, why, when, and how! They
never stop asking questions and I never stop asking questions just like a five-year-old.
What do you daydream about?
Earle: Going under water...Saving the ocean...Being a fish… Or a blue whale, the biggest animal on Earth and to sense
sound that has travelled over hundreds, maybe thousands of miles. I daydream about that, doesn’t everybody?
What is the best place you have ever travelled to?
Earle: It’s always the next place. And I love to go back to the places I have known over the years, because one of the things
that motivates me above all else is to do whatever I can to make the world aware of how much is changing and how
fast it’s changing, and what the consequences are for us.
The impact that humans, our species has had on the Earth since I was a child is greater than during all preceding
human history put together. The pressure that we are putting on the land, the air, the water, and wildlife is severe. The
natural environment that keeps us alive has been stressed significantly.
I have had the privilege of spending more time than others in the ocean and seen things that others haven’t. People
need to know. You can’t care if you don’t know and most people simply don’t know.
Why is the ocean so important to life on Earth?
Earle: The ocean is the basis of our life support system. Take away life in the ocean and we don’t have a planet that works.
What is the best piece of advice anyone has ever given you?
Earle: Don’t take no for an answer and find out what you want to do and then find a way to make it happen. You can spend
many lifetimes fulfilling the dreams of others. But if you have a dream of your own, don’t wait. Just find a way to make
that dream come true. Don’t let people say it’s impossible or it’s foolish.
What can’t you travel without?
Earle: I rarely travel without a camera. I am not a photographer, but taking photographs helps me to remember and to
document. Oh, and a bathing suit.
What can we do to help the ocean?
Earle: The ocean is vulnerable. What we do or don’t do will make a difference.
The first thing you need to do is ask yourself who am I? What do I love? What am I good at? If you are good with
words, then use those words. If you are good with numbers, use numbers. If you play a musical instrument, write a
song. If you are a teacher, use that talent. Adults, take a kid to a wild place by the sea. If you are a kid, grab an adult
and take them somewhere and show them the future of the ocean or a lake or a river through your eyes.
